north korea/us summit

We’re all clear that the GOP Establishment isn’t your side. All things Trump and Trump supporting (with the itty bitty wiggle room of mj) is your side.

Just so we are clear.

Fair point. I can’t argue with that. I depise the GOP establishment almost as much as the Dems.

Michael Moore (of all people) briefly removed his mask, and gloriously explained to a big crowd of liberals, better than anyone ever (literally) why Trump was going to win the 2016 election.

It’s still one of the best clips of all time. Watch:

If the US is willing to negotiate and meet and possibility enter into a deal with NK without meaningful concessions on such things as human rights, etc. it makes it more likely that other countries will be willing to do so rather than following the contain and sanction policy lead of the US in the passed....even if we don’t get a deal and want to return back to sanctions, etc.

Kind of like how meeting and dealing led to a bad deal that everybody but us is still following despite us pulling out.

That’s what it means to me.

Is it worth the risk, IMO?

Yeah....probably.
As always, thanks for your take. I don't disagree, but I also don't see where anything other than an initial meeting happened. It will be very interesting to watch this thing unfold, good or bad.

Well, we are only out 24 hours or so and already hearing rumblings that we have agreed to stop joint military exercises in the region. Haven’t heard anything about human rights improvements.

I’m not saying the meeting shouldn’t have happened. I’m saying something that doesn’t get said a whole lot around here...I’m not sure. The proof will be in the results.

I don't think human rights should be a part of denuclearization talks. Nothing will get done if that's part of the process.

Stopping joint military exercises doesn't seem like too much to give up as a starting point. Those exercises have long been used by the US and SK as saber rattling. And that's exactly how it has been received as well. I wouldn't even begin to think of giving up my force equalizer with the most powerful military on the planet practicing war with the country that I'm still at war with right next door.

Just my opinions. I'd actually like to see the world community offer life long fame, fortune, and security to Kim and his family in exchange for handing NK over to SK. Give him a chunk of property somewhere of his choosing other than Korea and let him rule his family and friends any way he wants. Seems like it would be much cheaper than anything that has been done so far.

The "major military exercises" are held in the spring according to multiple reports on (OMG) Fox News. My overpowering sense of the obvious, aided/abetted by such reporting, would lead me to conclude that the next "major military exercises" will be held in the spring of '19. Growing up in Creek County, even I would conclude there is ample time to declare a "resumption" if the fat bastard is playing the same bullshit game the regimes have played since they sucker-punched BillDick.

If Fox News told you to play chicken with an 18-wheeler would you do it? Lol wow the gullibility...

So you expect we will eventually ask for human rights improvements as a condition and resume miItary exercises in the spring if we don’t see them?

We should treat nk’s human rights like we do all countries’ human rights. Why does captain America have to sacrifice denuking a country and ending a 70 year war when no other president has had a hand in curbing human rights violations?

Bush and obama scolded China. African dictators do what they want. White farmers in South Africa are trophy hunts. Let’s get the biggest deal of the century done then president Kamala Harris can swoop in and get them straightened out on how to treat their people.

Hardest working president ever.

George Washington brought this country - loosely held together by the tattered string of the Articles of Confederation - to a constitutional convention, where he was unanimously selected our first president, after kicking Britain’s ass

Thomas Jefferson doubled our country’s terrority and ended the importation of new slaves.

Lincoln ended slavery.

FDR brought us out of the Great Depression and fought WWII.

When Humpty Trumpty achieves this type of hard work and gets off the golf course, wake me up lol

Here's food for thought: The POTUS says, "There is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea."

But North Korea still has nuclear weapons and Kim Jong Un is still supreme leader.

I'm glad the summit took place but the celebratory statements seems a little like this ...

I would agree with you 100% but surely you don’t think that what we are seeing and hearing is the entirety of the agreement at this point - or the leverage.

Nobody is above criticism but don’t make the same mistakes others do and underestimate what’s happening. This ain’t W.

What makes you think that what we are seeing and hearing isn’t the entirety of the agreement?

And do you feel comfortable with the notion of any secret agreement of this magnitude being made and not being put before the American people?

It's funny to me that people expect Trump to fix Korea faster than they bought their house.

Let's ask @davidallen how long it takes to put a deal together.

I agree.

Also funny to me are the people legitimately believing Trump has already fixed Korea faster than they bought their house.

Me? I’m taking a wait and see attitude. It’s too early to declare problem solved OR massive defeat. The present agreement is a nice framework, but the real hard work is still left to be done.

Or any kind of defeat.

Because I read and absorb information that in aggregate has been correct on virtually everything ahead of time to this point re: Trump, and if you view the exchange this week through the prism of it having been a photo op, not an actual negotiation, the optics make more sense.

As I said, it's my opinion - which could certainly be wrong. I just see nothing to indicate that what we see is remotely the entirety of the whole story.

And no - I want to know everything and have everything verifiable rather than having to say "IMO" or some such. It's incredibly frustrating to have any aspect of our government's activities be so secret and shady, but it does stand to reason that certain things in the realm of background possibility should be kept quiet from an intelligence and leveraging standpoint.

If for example, we somehow have already destroyed or disabled their nuke arsenal, or proven beyond doubt we can, or somehow have removed an actual behind the scenes power structure with KJU as a figurehead more than an actual leader, we hold all the cards and are allowing him to save face and prosper by appearing to negotiate a deal that he in reality has no choice in. I believe some combo of these things have happened to turn NK from a belligerent psycho nation to one that agreed so publicly to denuke in the space of 5 or 6 months. If nothing else, that rapid turnaround tells me that something significant happened and KJU had a come to Jesus moment with someone and was told to get his shit together or be destroyed.

It's speculation on my part, but our discussion forum seems like the right place to express that.

I agree - if anyone is basing their idea that NOKO is subdued as a result of a stroll around a Singapore garden for the cameras, they are as mistaken as anyone. If the problem is solved, it has a much bigger backstory than a one day photo op.

There is one thing that could sway the jd’s of the world and that’s international weapons inspectors going anywhere they want. It might take 15 years to take everything down, but the key to this being a win is the U.N. or whomever says yes NK is playing ball. That could happen next week or at least in 2018.

Now, NK manufactures and sells drugs, counterfeit money, knock off products like cigarettes so they have a lot to hide other than weapons. Obviously their work camps are another thing they don’t want the U.N. walking through.

you stated it with such confidence and assurance and certainty that indicated to me you had something other than speculation and that he was foolish not to believe as you did.

Thanks for clarifying.

If anyone thinks the problem is or might be solved....as we speak...they are fooling themselves.

It wouldn’t take what you say in your first sentence. What you say in your second sentence would be a real good start for me. I guess we will see if that happens on your proposed timeline.

The answer is years - 3 or 4 minimum. Of course DJT says it is done already so you got that....

and that’s enough

one guy bows

the other guy directs him to sit

my old dog had no problem knowing what a rolled up newspaper was for
