Nope...One out of thousand comments this guy has made over the years that I agree with does not buy any affirmation from me. He is a court jester pure and simple.

One of the few people left with a national platform to hand it to both sides. Of course it's not about agreeing or disagreeing with everything he's ever said. I certainly don't, but he's what's left of free thinking and free speech in a world of partisan political media. He's old school and still brings in voices he or his audience may not agree with. That used to be the norm and now it's almost extinct. People should always allow themselves to be made uncomfortable and listen to perspectives outside their home team. Whether I agree or not with all the takes Bill Maher is not a court jester.
Maher is what we used to call a Liberal, before the liberals became crazies. Everybody swerved hard left and he stayed true to himself. I am a constitutional conservative but I respect his opinion.
I was never a huge fan of his and didn’t agree with him on much, but he always seemed like a fairly reasonable liberal, not a wacko leftist. I think he has actually stayed true to his beliefs and the left has gone to crazy town.
Don’t pump up this guy too much. He likes to date hookers and I believe he is or was married to a porn star who resembles Queen Latifah!
Sometimes he really comes off as a condescending prick but in general I find him to be intellectually honest, which is rare these days on the right and left. He pisses me off on Christianity but he at least calls out the Muslims as well.

He’s always been reasonable on his show. He tries to stimulate discourse from both sides. He calls out idiocy and corruption regardless of the source.
With that said, his ratings have been dropping, and ratings matter, so he is now trying hard to attract viewers that were not part of his previous base.
In other words, like everything else, it is all about $. He is in the job of entertainment. Don’t count on him being sincere as much as he is actually trying to find a sweet spot niche that belongs primarily to him.

I disagree. It's not a ratings push. He's been a consistent liberal all along. What you're watching is the split between the liberals and the bat shit crazy progressives (a misnomer if there ever was one). He's just got the balls to call bullshit on their utter insanity.

Seriously though, I did just watch the Maher clip. He's still an asshole and surprisingly wrong on most issues. However, lately he's been getting some things exactly right and I commend him for taking on the absurdities and stating the obvious. To me, that chick is a traitor. Let her rot in China.

I don't think thats it. Those on the right had already quit watching him based on his 4 years of 'down with Trump'. Now that he's talking classic liberal (as opposed to Squaddie Psycho), he's turning off his base, which was all that was left. So he's speaking his mind in spite of the resulting ratings losses.

I think for the most part he is the same person he has always been, he is shocked and dismayed to watch what the left has become, and is trying to talk some sense into them. I think he understands the left will never listen to anyone on the right that tries to get them to return to sanity and hopes they will listen to someone on their own team.
Clearly what he is doing is working. You, and other conservatives, are now paying attention to him, which helps his ratings. BM is no different from CNN/FoxNews. They are more concerned with ratings and $ than they are with actually providing fair and balanced discussion.
I like BM. A lot. I mostly agree with the points he makes. I have no issue with the linked video in the OP, and think that it is pretty consistent with what he has done in the past. You guys just hated him when he had his sights set on Trump (easy target). Without that low hanging fruit, he has expanded his repertoire. Not surprising. He has to have content. Just don't fool yourself into thinking that he, and his producers, and HBO, are not acutely attentive to $ and ratings and basing narrative on those numbers. That would be naive.

You know the Democrats are in serious left-wing fringe when BM is saying you might want to tone it down. His hypocrisy is showing in that video. Worried about political prisoners in China, BM ignores that we have those right here in the good old US-of-A. Political parties rigging elections in China, BM ignores the same thing right here in the US. Actors and celebrities being bought off by China, but BM says USA...nope good to go. China is a tyrannical government to BM, but hey let's just keep watching the Olympics. I guess Communism is just a step to far for him, well at least if you call it communism. As long as you call it something else, BM is ready to lay the wood.
I understand that in your world view there can be only conservatives that criticize progressive thought, so there’s no point in my addressing that aspect of your comment. To be honest I don’t watch Bill Maher’s show, I’m not sure what channel it’s on, but I must not get it on my tv. The only time I see any clip from his show is when it’s replayed on sites like this one.
I don’t know Bill Maher personally, so I’m not going to pretend I know why he says the things he does. But I doubt he dilutes his opinions for any reason, or is attempting to lure conservatives to watch his shows so he can bump up his ratings. I think he has more integrity than that. He sees the left-wing of this country, the team he most identifies with, as going completely off the rails, and is trying to steer them back into sanity. That’s how I view these clips, anyway. You obviously take a much more cynical approach.
