Lee, great job on the podcast. Not much of a specific question, but I think the general theme on these boards regarding the RTC program is how it plans to generate more funding along with how it plans to work on keeping guys around and bringing in new talent. Penn St has done a good job with their NLWC program and keeping their studs in the room with the likes of David Taylor, Zain Retherford and Jason Nolf. They have also brought in Kyle Snyder and Thomas Gilman. Those are some quality guys to train with and they can act as assistant coaches without being on staff.Does anybody have specific RTC related questions for next week's episode? Got a special guest to discuss.
I search annually for new OSU wrestling apparel. Tough to find.Lee, great job on the podcast. I know there is a casino night fundraiser soon, but it would be nice to have somewhere you could buy OSU and Cowboy RTC apparel. It is really hard to find any OSU wrestling specific apparel to purchase online. So maybe that is one idea for generating funds.

Hey @leecothran: silly human interest question for the pod…Wyatt seems to have a fairly obscure walk-on song (or I’m way behind the times…highly likely). Any story behind it?
The basic message Coach Smith does not want to finance other colleges wrestlers but any Cowboy who wants to go freestyle during or after college wrestling the Cowboy wrestling club will do that. Apparently John does raise money for the program according to Derek Fix but they want to do it better and so they are going with the web site etc that other RTC's already do. Fix indicated that John believes there are plenty of good training partners at Oklahoma State. He believes that it actually better for the elite wrestler to have partners that let the elite wrestler work his moves 100% of the time ( like John did when he was the elite wrestler) instead of 2 elites that they get to do their moves 50% of the time. I took all of this to mean we hope to go up 1 level with our club or RTC but we will not be Penn. St. or Ohio State or Cliff keen. Can anyone give the CliffsNotes on the RTC?
Are we doing this thing or not?
Thanks, I'll have to listen when I get a chance. The basic message Coach Smith does not want to finance other colleges wrestlers but any Cowboy who wants to go freestyle during or after college wrestling the Cowboy wrestling club will do that. He said that the primary focus of Cowboy RTC is to develop and support Oklahoma State wrestlers on the senior level. He said that if an athlete from somewhere else wants to come to Stillwater to train, they are welcome and they will be supported. They’ll be compensated. But they aren’t going to go offer signing bonuses to try to lure guys from other programs the way Carl does. He also contends that the NLWC hasn’t really benefited them that much… that they were good before they started doing this.
John just pulled in back-to-back #1 recruiting classes… so…
It will be interesting this spring and summer to see how these local kids do Nationally in freestyle and then Super 32's with folk style. We have Jordan Williams , Anthony Ferrari, and Zac Blankenship coming in next year. I believe that Ferrari and Williams can wrestle with anyone in the Country. While Zac Blankenship has time to develop but he is a question mark especially being so short. The next year the commitments are Cael Hughes and Jersey Robb both very local. The next year it is likely Angelo Ferrari ( looks like a top5 if he keeps developing) Young Voinovich and McComas. The next year Lockett ( looks like a top 5 guy). Looks like we are going local but i have heard the HWT from New Jersey being mentioned who is a junior like Cael Hughes. I think if we can get a top 5 guy you get him if he is the right kid and some of these locals will go else where or walk on.I don’t think we just got the two top classes though recruiting certainly has improved with getting rid of Guerrero and letting Perry and Caldwell have more sway. An interesting situation is developing….lots of very good recruits locally coming up….but not necessarily the superstars like a Fix or Ferrari…..more like a Mastro. A couple might turn out to be superstars, like Lockett perhaps. There’s almost enough to load up our recruiting on just those. So do we take local guys that are like 10-30 or so P4P, or do we turn down some to save space for some national top 5 guys.
Blankenship had two strips of tape on both shoulders yesterday. Not sure if that is just for looks or actually achieving something. I assumed it was just for looks since it was two different colors.I love Blankenship’s strength and motor. Seems like Lockett, youngest Ferrari (I think it’s that one) and maybe Williams could be really special and elite if they dedicate themselves. Most of the rest are really good but not elite. But they are close enough if they totally dedicate they may get there. Having AJ set an example for hard training is huge. For years we have had a bunch of partiers who did not dedicate themselves. With G’s seeming turnaround hopefully we are nearing the end of that, though I still hear the party stories, including AJ. Not sure I’m thrilled with little Smith still hanging around.
We really need one of these guys to be on AJ/Daton level. That gives us 3 with the remainder of the team developing. Hopefully one or more of Plott, Mastro, Young, or Surber is a top 3-4 guy. Wittlake already has a 4th under his belt with 3 more tries remaining. That should be title hunt material for several years.I love Blankenship’s strength and motor. Yeah, does he have shoulder issues? I can’t remember seeing anyone having both shoulders taped like that. That's KT tape.
Probably a result of football season running into wrestling season. He was wearing it at the Bixby vs Stillwater match in Dec. Plott was also wearing it early last year. After the shoulder popped, he switched to a brace.Yeah, does he have shoulder issues? I can’t remember seeing anyone having both shoulders taped like that.
I've got some (if you happen to know)...Any questions for the podcast?
I've got some (if you happen to know)...
- Are we sending any guys to the Last Chance Open this weekend? (no one is showing in Track yet)
- Do you know how Haas is doing in the room vs Stika? Was wrestling him @ 197 considered?
- Any word on Boone?
- Maybe a general discussion about next year's lineup? (who will be back, options at different weights, transfer possibilities, etc)
Almost all the folks I've talked to about the Bout at the Ballpark are of the opinion that it was a big swing and miss and never should've happened.Any questions for the podcast?
With our podcaster reality has sunk in which I am glad. This year has been a real disappointment and I'm uncertain with the future ( but I hope that it has to be much better than this year). You are indicating information that I don't know ( which I like). Such as Kyle Haas apparently is doing very good in the room and you see him as a title contender in the future at 184. I hope that you are right because I haven't seen that with his results in competition. I know he is very strong and if he got some fluidity, smoothness and technique he could be someone special. I hope Lee is right. Voinovich or Travis Mastro needs to be a star at 149. At 157 I think you go next year with the winner between Williams and Ferrari, and then the 1 who lost and redshirted wrestles 157 the next year. Then you go Ferrari at 57 and Williams at 65 and neither of them lose a year. I think Ferrari is better than people think. I know at freestyle in the spring I thought Ferrari was better than Ed Scott who is rated 9th at 157 as a redshirt freshman. I guess time will tell how it works in the future. We sure could use some luck and a bunch of wrestler improvement in the next year. I am also concerned that we are having so many injuries that our progress of wrestlers has been set back or even limited. This could cost us 35 down the road.
Haas wrestled 11 matches this year, won all of them, and 7 of those wins were by fall.... could you explain what you mean by "haven't seen that with his results"?With our podcaster reality has sunk in which I am glad.
