We had a good tournament. Proud of the team. We're not far off but still not close either. We have two hammers at 133 and 197 for the next 2-4 years. High All-American potential at 165. Other than that? Need two more hammers and 3-5 other AA types.
Didn’t that match end with an injury?Buchanan beat him Surber 17-not much at the 4 way duel. That may answer your question.

Ferrari needs to stay at 197. Hwt has a bunch of monsters right now. AJ would be a monster also but he would definitely be an underdog to Paris and Gable might be the best HWT in the world. Surber did wrestle Buchanon in the semi's of the Cowboy Challenge and medically forfeited at 5 minutes of the match. I don't remember the score at the time but I remember him being taken down regularly. Buchanon took 8th at Nationals. Surber is a good prospect but Ferrari needs to stay at 197 next year. Although if the cut is really hard for him now maybe?
After watching him win as true freshman. Your going to bet against him?IMO I'd let him be at 197 another year, and then consider HWT. Gable is a different kind of HWT, and Gable will score on him...I agree about Parris as well....From a style standpoint I think both would cause problems for Ferrari. 197 is where it's at for him at this particular juncture.

I know this is new to you but Iowa nor penn state have the best facilities in the ncaa.I have read this week that some are giddy how we over performed and we are sitting in third - third. Says a lot.
Only thing that matters to me is the team title. Individual titles are great but it is about the team.
Would love to have seen Fix win, but maybe if he was wrestling for a team title, and wrestled for a more feared program which also means more confidence and swag, that might be enough of an edge to have won. How much value is it psychologically to know you are wrestling for the best program? I don’t blame Fix for losing, I blame the lack of commitment in the wrestling program to win. Wrestling against that PSU singlet mentally is tough, that use to be OSU.
When I look at the orange singlet, it signifies the 3rd to 6th best program in the nation based on a little more than the past decade. Second best conference that has fallen far behind the BIG.
This program has been so far from competing at the top for so long and we lacked the leadership within the AD department and HC position to navigate the changing landscape and keep us on top. Only way that happens if the bar for excellence was slowly lowered and internally we knew we were no longer the top program. Feels like surrender to me.
Reminds me of what happened with baseball, we had it going big and then abandoned it. It hurt watching our wrestling program and baseball program sacrificed at the altar of the revenue sports. Guess it was needed, but it is so hard to get back on top. You also now have fan apathy that sinks in, that leads to in my opinion excuses, acceptance, and a feeling of helplessness. It leads to division in terms of what needs to be done and protecting sacred cows and old notions. Our history now hurts us because we think history alone gets us back.
We have a nice wrestling program that has the most NC’s ever, we are no longer a blue blood in the sport in a present tense, we have the history of one, but evidently we lack the resources, the commitment, conference affiliation, recruiting, and at some point admitting what we are doing no longer works and drastic changes need to be made, and quickly. OSU should say screw the Big 12, and try to get in the BIG. And put up the financial resources to go win it all, the program deserves that.
Some have talked about some changes that have been made. I hope they were made in time.
Anytime a BIG team is expected to win it, you can pretty much take it to the bank we are not winning a NC.
It pains me to see the winningest program in all of North America, be it college or pro to fall to this level. We now seek individual titles, not a team title. We needed Fix wrestling for first place team title, not to be 2nd.
If I ever win the lottery the programs at OSU that needs it the most is Wrestling and Softball. Softball with a push could win it all. Wrestling needs a remodel.
Yes, I am very frustrated that yet again, we took a sport that we were feared in and truly expected to win NC’s, to saying wait until next year, yet again. I don’t blame the wrestlers, I blame the slow boil of mediocrity that is now accepted. At some point maybe we finally get tired of being the BIG’s biotch and do something significant to change our path. Of course that takes money and perhaps the cost of competing at the highest level is out of our reach and hence the complacency and acceptance of our lot in life. If we stay in the Big 12 maybe we can stay the best team in the Big 12. Times have changed.
Compare Gables freshman year to Ferraris .Have you seen Gable Steveson? I think the world of AJ, but if you've watched Gable you wouldn't be asking that question in the first place.

No, the problem is we saw Penn. St. show their continued greatness in the finals again. I did not think that RBY would win Nationals and have 2 years left. I thought Lee versus Eierman was an even battle bit Lee won. I thought Kemmerer would wreck Starocci like he did in the Big 10 finals but he didn't. Starocci has 4 years left. Brooks has 3 years left and was undefeated this year. They have Kerkvliet who is injured but is an All American and he has 4 years left. Beard is an All American and he has 4 years left. Berge got injured in the quarters and medical forfeited. He has 3 years left. True freshmen Bartlett and Howard look very good and were top 10 recruits. Besides having 2 of the top 3 recruits in the country coming in next year Facundo and VanNess. Yes things are looking much better for us. However Plott has struggled with serious injuries' for 2 straight years so we don't know what he can do. Older Mastro was pretty good for a true freshman but Howard has beaten him every time they have wrestled. It appears to me that Penn. St administration and financial backing is 10 times better than ours. Cael and his staff have clearly demonstrated they are superior Coaches to ours( we can not get a better Coach than John Smith). I think we will get team trophies for the next 5 years but I really question if we can beat Penn. St. in that time period. Iowa may beat us most of those years also. I really don't like it that Daton lost but I really don't like that 2 years ago Daton would have kicked RBY and lost to him tonight where RBY was clearly the better wrestler. Now my biggest problems is expectation of a team Championship in less than 20 years since we won our last 1. Coach Smith rigidness is a concern and that he did not push for upgrades like he should have. John thinks old school where you don't want shiny new stuff because you will become soft. Again I stress unless we could get Cael we can not find a better Coach. Also the sky is not falling . But I am left wondering how will we beat Penn. St. although Iowa did this year ( they have pulled in some great transfers and of course Spencer Lee).don't bring the rational to this board...the sky is falling because Fix took an L and the perception is he isn't developing
Whatever the equation moving forward, Surber needs to be worked into the lineup.
If AJ bulks up, you have to feel good about Surber at 197.
Getting four All Americans today was good but tonight's round is very important I believe for the Program. We have not had a National Champion since Alex ( a long time). Wrestling remembers National Champs, runner ups not near as much. We have recruited very good lately but 2 National Champs especially a freshman and a sophomore who will be around for years will jump our Program up a level in everyone's eyes including future Blue Chip recruits.
I'm old and more forgetful than most. I appreciate the reminder and apologize to a great Cowboy wrestler Dean Heil. 2 time National Champion. His wrestling style on defense frustrated many wrestlers and non Cowboy fans that they changed rules(Can't hold unto a leg and be on your back more than a few counts) to combat his defense after his junior year.Ironically, not everyone remembers National Champs. Dean Heil has won since Alex.
YesAll you fair weather fans still going to fire Coach Smith today?
Yes. He's a scowling grumpy old man who hurts the team with his attacks on the refs. Get him out of the corner at least. Further, his individual achievements cast too long a shadow. His staff seems scared of him.Should we fire John tomorrow or wait until the tournament is over?
That quad-pod opens up a lot of scoring opportunities and is his favorite set up for his wing-roll-of-death /sHe tried to initiate more I thought in this match. Other guy used his length and stayed away hence the 3 stalls. Great ride though.
Took the bait on that one.2 DUI's...the second close after Eddie's wreck.
He is apparently doing well now and has a wrestling academy in Arkansas.
Hope AJ stays at 197 and Picklo goes 197 at OU. Would love to see them square off a few times!
He was able to take down a world class wrestler in Amine. I don’t see why people think he wouldn’t be competitive with anyone.another year and it will take snyder and cox to square off with AJ
kid simply broke the mold last night
Think about this, AJ was only taken down ONCE in an entire season. His only TD was to Adams in his lone lose. Reversal is a different story but to only be taken down once in a season is pretty damn impressive. The splits this due can do to prevent a TD is freaking amazing. My balls hurt everytime I see him do that move to prevent a TD.
All you fair weather fans still going to fire Coach Smith today?
When was the 2nd one? All I remember is Adams from WVU. He was reversed in the Big 12 finals against Buchanan from WYO.He corrected himself in his interview after wining his individual title and said he was taken down twice.

Gotcha, I must have missed it while watching the finals at Big 12. Still only giving up 2 TD in a year is still damn impressive. He also gave up a takedown to Buchanan in the last 30 seconds of the Big12 final.
AJ had cut him to go for the major and I don't think he expected Buchanan to shoot again. AJ immediately got the reversal, but then ran out of time to get bonus points.
Fun fact about AJ... of the 7 other AAs @ 197 this year, AJ beat 5 of them. He also beat Elam at Junior Nationals in November. So the only guy he didn't beat was Beard from PSU because they never wrestled.

AJ does a fantastic job of promoting Oklahoma State wrestling. He might be a pied piper for Cowboy wrestling. Actually already is with Anthony coming after next year because his older brother is here.
