I have a question, who will be the starter at 165 & 197 next year?

Cam Amine is probably the 165. Surber is the media pick for 197, and I’d guess the staff would redshirt Merrill unless absolutely necessary.
So where does Fish go? Also I wonder who wins the Surber vs Merrill matches?

I watched Dee extensively before ... always was a fan of his talent and style. He took his lumps but like I said, it's because the kid wanted matches where maybe he shouldn't win. He was clearly an elite talent last year as he dominated through U17 worlds.

I watched him again last night and will say this

If you're a wrestler who has beaten Lockett or outplaced him at a tournament, save the picture/bracket because I'm not sure those items will ever be available again.

Yeah, he does seem to have jumped levels over the past year

125- Troy
133- Cael
141- Tagen
149- Carter
157- Teague
165- Cam Amine
174- Hamiti
184- Plott
197- Surber
285- Capt America
That looks pretty good , what do we expect from Hughes this year?

Just a hunch but if Hughes does not or can not make 133 then He will not be wrestling this year. I do not see him at any other weight in the lineup and frankly it is hard to blame him. He could not make 133 last year or at least at the end of last year and has to have grown since then. Even if he made 133 would he have the stamina to win.

I imagine DT will encourage his guys to wrestleoff at their most comfortable weights. After the best guys are settled, everyone else makes do if you want into the lineup. For Hughes, either he's better than Tagen (assuming he wants to stay 141, I heard he's pretty big) or suck it up and make 133 for this year.

exactly. Win your preferred weight or find a weight.

I would hope/bet the new staff is more in tune with what makes an ideal weight and how to maintain it healthily. John seemed like a “tough it out you’ll be fine” kind of guy regarding weight… but then also was hands off with letting some guys get too heavy between active periods. Far from an expert, just vibes. My hope would be that if Jamison’s cut hurt him at the end, but he still wants to go 141, then the coaching staff has better ways to keep him on track and it will be more of a partnership throughout the season.

Amine/Surber next year

Lockett/Merrill in 2026 is my guess unless DT wants to redshirt Lockett and TRULY unleash the terror in 2027 (Caleb Fish would be the guy then I think). As a true freshman though, Lockett will beat anyone at NCAAs with the exception of Mesenbrink.

Is Surber healthy? I know surgery was in the plans for him

Jamison wanted to go 49 and did indeed win the wrestle off. Was either asked or convinced to go 41 by the staff. They want Carter at 49 to get him in the line up.

A few more things: In a perfect world everyone has the right slot to fit in weight wise and I don't think this staff is crazy about guys cutting a ton unless it's necessary. But anyone who thinks Haines and C-star werent cutting a sh/t ton last year are nuts. Point being even psu knows sometimes it has to happen either for the team or for the individual. Such is the case with the Pokes from 33-49.

Was told (haven't verified) Hughes needs to get stronger to really win at 41 so 33 may be where he needs to go this year just from a strength perspective.

Even if Cael makes 33 there is no guarantee he starts. The matches between all the 33s right now are TIGHT. Reece and Blankenship ain't playing.

All that being said this staff will absolutely be with these guys every step of the way during these cuts. They have the right people AND the science/technology now to help these guys make weight, be healthy and hopefully still wrestle at a high level.

It's early still. Things could change. Hopefully no one suffers any injuries but that could definitely change things. Also these guys will have to perform and get the job done at these weights. We are 9 weeks from CKLV and that tourney should reveal where everyone is at.

Where does JJ fit into the 33 saga. Last him and I spoke he had been told he would have a chance. Can he not beat Witcraft or Blankenship?

Is getting Carter at 149 and TJ at 141 about getting the best lineup possible if Hughes isn’t quite strong enough for 141 (yet)? I know the Kennedy-Carter connection is strong.

Hope there are better/smarter cuts with this new staff compared to what they did with the previous regime.
