HS Recruiting News

Interesting story on Flo to told by Kozak. Pretty much said last senior world team camp DT & Blaze had a really long convo off to the side. This was prior to DT becoming coach of course. So DT could have some kind of good standing with Blaze.
Villasenor is in the round of 16 with 3 wins. 1st match he won by tech with lots of tilts, 2nd match he won by tech with lots of takedowns and only one, 2 point tilt. 3rd match he won 7 to 4 giving up a takedown and escape. He got a takedown and 2 reversals, he rode his opponent for about 4 minutes but could not get back points.

Jax won by 3 tech falls with his style of attacking in a relentless manner and he is especially good at slide bys.

Others of some interest (probably missing some)

106-Craft of Coweta (17 seed) lost in R32
106-Ross Ed North (#2) into Quarters
126-Ramirez Committed (#3) Quarters
132-Stockton Allen of STW (#12) Quarters

Not sure what the schedule is but the other weights have not started. OSU commits or possible recruits in the other weight classes include:
144-Bassett, Purler, Deutschlander
150-Robideau, Hickman, Olivarez
157-Miller
175-Teague
190-Peter Mocco
285-Michael Mocco

Pulled up that match and watched it. Wanted to see what tilt he was using. He definitely looks to me to be emulating Spencer Lee both in the TDs he used and his style of tilt. The kid he wrestled was HUGE and Iggy handled him. Very impressive!

Anyone know why Munaretto is not wrestling?
Robideau looks very solid, good defense, good positioning and scoring lots of takedowns. Michael Mocco won twice easily with a pin and a tech fall to get to the quarters. Mocco is so good his opponents actually looked pitiful. Routledge apparently did not wrestle. Bassett of course is in the quarters.

Jax won by tech in the 1st period. He even throws the kitchen sink at his opponents. He would seem to be a perfect fit for Taylor in that he never stops trying to score points.
That’s a perfect fit for every coach. Couple that with the fact that he’s funky as heck and rubber legged. I’m always surprised when he takes a rare l. He’s obviously going to be a stud!

Villasenor won 4 to 0 in the quarters to advance to the semi's. He got a double leg takedown early in the first and rode his opponent out. He got a quick escape but failed to score the rest of the period. Then he rode his opponent for 2 minutes in the 3rd period. A solid win with his opponent never threatening him.

I watched 3 of Ramirez's matches where he won by tech,. 4 to 2, and he won a major. He looks like a good wrestler but not really impressive so far.
Ramirez won 9 to 1 in the quarters with a takedown in the third period, a 4 point near fall with a cradle, an escape and 1 point for his opponent stalling. Miller got teched by Knox in the quarters.

Surprise, surprise, Jax teched his opponent 16 to 1 who is the 11th rated 132 in the Country. He is unbelievably dominant. Split fairly evenly between takedowns and back points his total points. It would be really humbling to be good and get scored on so easily and so frequently.

Robideau advances to the semi's with a pin. The announcer said we have 2 hammers here but failed to mention that Landon was a sledgehammer. He is so solid and so strong.

Saw Ramirez MFFed against Desmond. Was looking forward to that showdown but hope Ronnie is alright.

Landon won 4 to 1 in the semi's against Gaj rated 3rd at 150. Robideau has great position, great hand fighting but is not explosive and offensive. He was behind 1 to 0 in the 3rd and got a quick escape and then a go behind and ride out to win 4 to 1. He had several close takedowns and Gaj had 2 good shots and Landon stopped him cold with a sprawl and his strength. His offense comes off his opponent's shots. He is developing more offense and I look forward to him wrestling and developing as a Cowboy.

Villasenor lost 5 to 4 to the 5th rated 113 McGinty. Ignacio took a weak shot and his opponent got around for the takedown. He lost a point for a straight arm pushout of his opponent ( real bad rule). Villasenor got 2 escapes and 2 stalling points. He needs to work on getting better at shooting takedowns. He could not get a takedown. He messed up and lost.. Disappointing.

Ramirez lost 10 to 3 to Seidel in the semi's. It was 3 to 3 with 30 seconds left when in a scramble Ramirez tried to roll and not give a takedown but got caught on his back and gave up 7 points.

Forrest with a tech fall at the 2 minute mark in the semi's. I really want us to get Jax. The most entertaining wrestler in the Country.

Mocco won in overtime 8 to 7 against the 7th rated HWT Levi from Florida on locked hands on the last rideout. Very good match.

Villasenor got Petersoned twice and gave up 12 points and lost 14 to 5. Again he just could not get the takedown when he needed it. He has got something to work on this year. He was out front trying to get behind his opponent a bunch of time but couldn't get around.

Disappointing ending for Ignacio. But he’s only a sophomore. Still has plenty of time to improve.

Robideau won by tech over Cosby 20 to 5. Landon really was dominant with lots of takedowns ( I think he got 9). Really looking forward to him wrestling for the Cowboys as he is getting better and better.
Mocco got beat 5 to 0 in the HWT finals against Bechtold. He needs to work on the bottom position since he got rode the whole 3rd period and put on his back for 4 points. Mocco got close on 2 takedowns but didn't finish. He should have taken neutral even though he was behind 1 to 0. Once Bechtold got his leg in Mocco was done on bottom.

I watched a lot of matches on Flo particularly Oklahoma wrestlers or wrestlers who we have recruited or might be interested in recruiting. I missed the finals match with Bassett and Zepeda but announcers were certainly excited about it with Bo finally winning in Sudden Victory. Forrest looked dominant in every match. Robideau looked great in all aspects of his wrestling. Harley called the Heavyweight final exactly right. Mocco made a huge mistake taking down. He had made 2-3 good shots on his feet and was fairly close to a takedown and this is the only way he was going to defeat his larger opponent. He is a junior and will grow into this weight. I was not at all disappointed in Ramirez. His match with Seidel was close until the very end and he suffered a dislocated finger which went out at least twice and he was forced to wrestle with it. He eventually forfeited to take 6th. He showed me however that he is capable of being a very good wrestler. Villasenor came back from his loss to take 5th with a major decision over Sibomana from New York who was freakishly well built and strong. Aydan Thomas from Stillwater also took 5th with a hard fought win over Botero 7-5. Aydan Thomas is a 120 pounder but he looks to be taller than most teams heavy-weights. He uses his length to great advantage. Beau Hickman of Tuttle took 8th as did Ethan Teague of Stillwater. Turner Ross of Edmond, Oklahoma took 6th at 106.

Mocco beat Bechtold in the 2 of 3 110 kg finals of the U17 US Open. I went back and watched those matches. He handled him fairly easy with an easy TF in the first match. However, they both moved up to 285 for this tournament and Bechtold really filled into the weight. Mocco was likely surprised and not prepared for the change in size of Bechtold. By Flo’s rankings, Bechtold is #5 and the top rated underclassman at 285.
