Trump goes after LeBron James

I’m sure LeBron isn’t shedding any tears in his Dom Perignon over Trump calling him stupid.

nope

but the outrage is strong

in the association you’d say scoreboard
in politics you’d say maga

Outrage?

No...no outrage that I’ve seen here.

Criticism isn’t the same thing as outrage.

As far as scoreboard, LeBron is winning this exchange so far in my book.

I agree LeBron isn’t immune from criticism...but the over the top reaction to what LeBron said (which was REALLY tame and measured) reveals quite a bit about the character of both men.

That presumes quite a bit of what you think is going on. I didn't realize mind-reading was a real thing.

Exactly. Only his ardent supporters would praise him going after LeBron. I'm not a fan of James in any way, but I respect him. Hard not to with what he has done both on and off the court.

Just more evidence of Trump's rampant narcissism.

Do you live on the surface of yourself, or is there a deeper, more calculating part of you that lives out a strategy you've formulated for your life?
It’s funny to watch the same set of people lick his boots in a rush to defend or rationalize him too.
My biggest complaint about board lefties in recent months is that most of you have turned a particular sort of vile. No extension of graciousness (see your example), dodginess and intellectual dishonesty (@syskatine) . It's as if most of you are taking the lead of @CSCOTTOSUPOKES . It reflects in periphery in how you conduct yourselves here.
“He’s using sports to kind of divide us” is tame and measured to anyone but the broflakeist of broflakes or someone that suffers from Trump Deification Syndrome.
The pushback from Trump is against Lebron's attempt to frame or normalize (hate that word) the behavior of the NFL players kneeling, passing the consequence of that behavior (division) from the players to the President.

The "I like Mike" portion of the Trump tweet is a double entendre, both referencing the GOAT debate between Jordan and Lebron and also to Jordan's choice to largely stay apolitical with the circulated "Republicans buy sneakers too" remark and not endorsing Dem candidates.

It doesn’t involve a single bit of mind reading whatsoever. It states an opinion as to what the respective statements reveal about the individual.

You stated that in a very coherent, rational, and reasonable way...which reveals something about your character to me as well....the same way Trump’s statement revealed something about his character to me.

I’ll go further by pointing out that any criticism of Trump constantly being characterized as “outrage” is a conscious decision by MAGA leaders to discount any criticism or disagreement with Trump as irrational hysteria.

Trump getting clap backs on twitter when he uses the twitter machine in the manner he does isn’t exhibiting outrage...it is engaging him somewhere and in a manner in which he has a strong home field advantage, and I’m not a big fan of doing it. The posts here in this thread that have exhibited the most “outrage”, IMHO, are the ones commenting on LeBron’s statements than those criticizing Trump.

Well, this is incredibly benign, though we may disagree on what the ultimate goal of the tweet is (thereby assessing its efficacy as something by which to discern character differently).

I have no objection.

Do you consider Trump to be a “high-character” person?

I don’t think we disagree on what the ultimate goal of the tweet probably is that much.

For me, character can be revealed in the means by which a person pursues their goals as much if not more than the goal itself.

Same here.

I just don't think it's a big deal to smack talk someone who is actively doing you (and by extension, the position and people supporting it) a disservice.

I don't believe a single voter changed sides over the tweet, which is par for the course.

I ultimately think how James responds will largely steer the NBA into or away from the choppy waters currently experienced by the NFL.

Since around 2006, when things really ramped up on the left against Bush, the Left has pushed politics into every avenue of life. They WANT it that way. Back then because social issues largely favored them, so it was to political/electoral advantage.

But politics in everything sucks. Just sucks. It oughtta be like the 20% backburner of things, except for the 6 month run-up to the next election.

Trump is creating a scenario for the Dems/Leftists that had already been created for the Reps/right: potential consequence for tying your business/industry to a political view. The NBA needs to be careful not to escalate this new conversation too much.

In the end, my desire (and I believe Trump's desire) is for companies/industries to take a step back re: taking blunt political stances (and restrain themselves to focusing singularly on the needs of the consumer). Family, past times, community, etc...ALL more important and fulfilling.

You crack me up, easily the funniest poster on this board.

You’re assuming the demographics of NFL/NBA fanbases are extensively overlapped. I would disagree.

In essence, that tweet can be somewhat summed up by the following gif.

And whether baiting your opponent is of slimy character or not, it invites them to respond with who they are or what they represent. Because that is the case, I personally don't think it's slimy but more of a public service... the conversation will take place and consequences will manifest themselves.

This is easily one of the 5 dumbest posts I’ve ever read lol

Political view and social stance are not the same thing.

What has Lebron said that is so bad? Most of what he says has to do with Trump trying to divide us and his mis steps around the racist in Virginia

I agree with just about everything you say here with two caveats:

-politics being pushed into every aspect of life has pretty consistently been an aspect of both the leftists and the right and MAGA...WAR ON CHRISTMAS (insert eye roll here) and others come to mind;

-I disagree re: Trump’s desire in your last paragraph. I believe HIS desire is for companies/industries to take a step FORWARD re: taking blunt political issues....towards him and his. He has never struck me as someone whom is okay with anything less than that from anyone. Thus the regularly disproportional (IMO) response to anyone who questions him or disagrees with him.

I understand the mindset of upping the ante and smack talk...it’s just not the mindset I would prefer to see from our leaders...and criticizing it isn’t fairly characterized as “outrage”.

I and I think you are interested in raising the level and nature of the political discourse in America.

Consistently upping the ante and baiting your opponent doesn’t do that, imo. I believe baiting your opponent in the manner Trump does IS slimy and (as you said) reveals whom he is and what he represents....thus my original statement.

I feel like I’ve had a fairly high level, reasonable, respectful discussion with you on this topic and have enjoyed it. So thanks.

You're possibly accurate in your first statement, and I may be misdiagnosing an over-reaching left with, instead, a relatively new environment (since around 2006) that allows all of us to see/experience political discord 24/7....social media.

Conversely, in almost every arena of competition (politics being such a battleground), there is always a champ/challenger setup. In politics and culture, you could compare champ to whatever is status quo, and challenger being the proposed replacement of champ. Obama advocated for "fundamentally changing" America. Some of that change can be largely agreed upon to be good, and in those areas, challenger became champ. But whatever positions weren't supplanted as champion (by the challenger) creates 2 possible scenarios: 1. The challenger consolidates its power and pushes again, or 2. the challenger refines its position, hopefully gaining more support (greater competitive advantage) and reengages.

From my vantage point, the progressive wing of the Dem party strengthened its grip with the trade-off being a more enthusiastic core (as the core shifts left) but giving up votes at the middle. This necessarily means that the core is less representative of the broader population. The greater enthusiasm translates into greater conflict.

After the midterms, the Dem party will be judged on if it takes control of the House or not. If it does, Progressives will feel vindicated and consolidate power, if it doesn't (gain control of the House), there will most likely be a moderation within the party, a correction.

Anyway, don't know why I got off on that tangent. Oh yes I do, it's because I'm presenting my case for why I believe the Left is largely the one "bringing the fight" and more at fault (based on my own personal preference) for forcing politics into every dimension of life.

On your last statement regarding Trump's desire for businesses, we'll simply not agree. That's okay.

Seriously?

You don’t see the negative characteristics you listed in a handful of regular conservative posters on this site?

Its like he is doing everything he can to lose the midterms.

I can't wait for his meltdowns as a powerless lame duck.

Pretty sure the story was, he is doing everything he can to lose the presidential election because he did not really want it. Worked then, if that was the case, so I like to just sit back and watch.

Trump is like a good plumber. When he gets down to business you can sure see his ass. No one likes to see your plumbers ass, but if he is a good plumber it is okay to figure out how to deal with it.

I think we are still in the early stages and really, fairly, cant say he cant do the job. Time will tell though..

trump is not a politician...he's a businessman. He's done more for the businesses of this country in 18 months than the suffering that went on for 8 years with looney tunes. That's what makes him work for me. He seems to be relentless in doing things that makes things better, going from one nightmare to another. The unraveling he is having to do with all the distractions is really pretty amazing. He's made things better for me without a doubt, where the past 8 years did nothing but stagnate things. well, there you are. that's it. He is trying to get things back on track after that crooked no good nobama shamed about everything he touched. Trump has a lot more things he's bringing to the table and should make things even better. As long as he does that he will be around and not even james can do anything about it. He's keeping it racial...talking about james.
