CV NEWS FEED // A new poll shows that President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are neck-and-neck in a hypothetical 2024 matchup.
Reuters conducted the online poll from December 5 to December 11.
Thirty-eight percent of respondents indicated that Trump is their choice to retake the White House, while 36% favored Biden’s re-election. The difference amounted to a 2% gap between the two major party frontrunners – a figure within the poll’s 2.9% margin of error.
Meanwhile, 26% of respondents selected “All others/Don’t know” as their response.
Currently declared high-profile independent and third-party candidates include attorney Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and socialist academic Cornel West. Kennedy was formerly challenging Biden for the Democratic nomination before he switched to an independent run in October.
Retiring moderate Sen. Joe Manchin, D-WV, may also soon announce a third-party bid for the White House.

Despite Trump’s apparent narrow lead, Reuters indicated that, per their poll, “in the seven states where the election was closest in 2020 … Biden had a 4-point lead among Americans who said they were sure to vote.”

“Overall, the poll showed deep apathy among many voters at a potential Biden-Trump rematch,” Reuterscontinued. “About six in 10 respondents said they were not satisfied with America’s two-party system and want a third choice.”
However, Reuters also noted that when respondents were explicitly “given an option to vote for Kennedy,” as opposed to the generic “All others” category, the race turned dramatically in Trump’s favor:
Trump’s lead widened to a 5-point advantage nationally when respondents were given an option to vote for Kennedy.
Some 16% of respondents picked Kennedy when given the option, while Trump had 36% support, compared to 31% for Biden. Trump also led Biden by five points in the seven swing states when Kennedy was as option.

Another Reuters poll taken at the same time confirmed the general consensus that Trump is the odds-on favorite to secure the Republican presidential nomination for a third consecutive time.
The poll showed Trump with 61% of primary support – a full 50 points ahead of his closest rivals Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former Ambassador Nikki Haley, who are tied at 11%.
“The poll found little evidence that Republican voters are swayed by the battery of federal and state criminal charges Trump faces,” Reuters added.

The poll also showed that “fewer than one-quarter of Republican respondents” believe left-wing narratives regarding Trump’s behavior during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
