NC State

I bet we’re still recovering from hell week
That is what it looked like to me. I guess Pennstate 1985 was correct when he posted that we would have a week or two in January when we would not look good and struggle. Everyone of our wrestlers, minus Hughes and Jamison, looked sluggish and not mentally into their matches. Yet, we won 9 out of 10 matches and put up 34 points.

Well, my boy Sprat looked half full of his normal energy and Robinson kept the match where he could win. If they meet in March, it’ll be different.

Fun match by our future 65 pounder at 33! I sure hope he gets his cut down well and he’s a problem for a wide open weight.

TJ is TJ…great job!

Young got the win, but he’s still having trouble finishing his shots with high percentage.

Fish is just fun to watch and the guy is dangerous, on both sides of the sword.

Amine, I really wish he would find 5th gear! He’s so good when he pedals down.

After that, NCst guts Wrestled to keep a narrow win in sight and Surber is the only guy who separated from that gameplan.

Hendrickson went about like Sprat, looked sluggish.

Either way, it was fun!

Great dual tonight. NC St showed up and wrestled tough despite the score. Spratley had an odd match. Still question thag first take down. He was the aggressor and controlled the match even being down. Really hope we can get more of that Hughes we saw tonight. He has a better chance of scoring us more points at nationals than Witcraft.

When was this "Hell Week"? Some guys looked a little flat like Plott and Wyatt but overall nothing too out of the ordinary.

So with Hughes’ performance last night, who is the 133 moving forward? The pin itself may have been the result of “catching” Orine, but Hughes rode an AA out for an entire period. That’s not nothing.
The way Hughes won that match—ride out plus multiple chances at back points before getting the pin—seems to be a much more sustainable style of wrestling than Witcraft’s boom or bust. Small sample size but I trust Hughes more in a tournament.

So long as his shoulder is okay and the weight cut doesn’t kill him, I’d tend to agree.

I believe it’ll be a tricky spot for a coach to navigate.

Witcraft is a fan favorite, a teammate favorite and a dangerous kid that does everything right. That’s hard to remove from a lineup.

Hughes, with my knowledge is a good kid, works hard, is a good teammate and has a hard time cutting weight to the spot he fits at. The only spot he outshines Reece is point scoring in March is likely.

I’m not even real sure who wins the ranking matches?

Also almost took him down a couple times too. Didn’t finish but Orrine played good defense. That’s something that should come with experience.

Not really a small sample size IMO. Hughes is 19-1 in all his total college matches. Only loss was a TB-2 3-2 vs Sammy Alvarez last year at the Bob Smith Open. Plus we all know what he's done in HS vs the top talent in the nation. Expectations were high for him coming in and this is kinda what I expected from him in his second year. Being able to compete and score points against the top ranked guys at 133.

J Carl kept saying on the broadcast how big he was for the weight, which I don't really see. He is 7-0 this year wrestling all at 133. He didn't appear to looked at all tired or phased by the cut in his match and it takes a lot of energy to ride a former AA for 2 whole mins.

Not sure if Witcraft was winning the ranking matches or if it was more of a disciplinary action for him not managing his weight, but my hope is that after last night he's got the confidence and motivation now to know he's capable of getting on the podium at nationals if he can hold the weight. Which I don't understand why he couldn't. He needs to be the 133 starter moving forward.

Don't think so. Hughes ability to ride the full 2nd period frustrated him beyond belief. Really got in his head at the last restart. It was a thing of beauty.
Bah... Witcraft might have gotten down 12-5 or something, but it would have still end in 6 on the scoreboard for the good guys as he would have hit a flying cement mixer or someother such nonsense in the 3rd and got the fall.

Ok Cowboy fans, another great win by the Pokes last night and I'm here with my Fartzy- expertise like analysis of the dual. I think most have nailed it with the thought that our Cowboys probably had a really tough week of practice considering as a whole we looked a little less crisp and energetic. If that is indeed the case then our boys deserve even more credit. NcSt came to wrestle though, so I also gotta give credit to Pop and his crew.

125- Spratley was the aggressor but struggled with 2 things that most of our wives probably wished we had more of..... length and speed. While I wish he'd of picked up the W, Troy will see more guys like this in March and cracking these types of codes is something he has time to work on.
Side note: @SlickWillie2018 I saw your "wet fart" comment and I feel the need to remind you that flatulence is my area of expertise. Stay in your lane sir.

133- What's going on? First off let me say I think the world of Reece. He's given a lot to this program. He has 2 losses, 1 was his first match after getting injured and the other is an OT loss to #10 who just lost in OT to #2. He's a stud. So why did Cael get the nod last night? I think its obviously a case of who is hurt the least now. That being said Cael looked great and got the win of his career last night. I can only say to @OSUBigBadBob, we all should drink up sir. I was skeptical as well. If I was a betting man I'd expect to keep seeing Cael if the shoulder holds up.

141- Tagen looked great and from what I hear the weight cut is going spectacular this year and I expect to see more great things from him. I'd like to see more of a variety of attacks (he has them) as well as some turns on top which he said himself he's working on.

149- When I watch Carter I picture a scenario where 3 guys are standing around a hole. 2 are shoveling dirt out while one is shoveling dirt back in. You see twice the effort for half the results you want. Carter should've easily had a major. HIDE YOUR DAMNED ANKLES! Love this kid but he's going to win his matches on his feet so he's got to get 3 when he reaches a leg.

157- Gritty. I'm really warming up to this guy. He's not flashy, he's just frigging tough. He reminds me of Nolan Boyd some years back. How tense was that first two mins even though there were no real shot attempts? You just felt like something big was going to happen any second! I see him continuing to improve and being the draw that nobody wants at NCAA's!

165- This and the next two are weights where I feel like "hell week" could have definitely have played a factor. Amine came out like his ass was on fire and his opponent was holding the only preparation H in the state. Ok, maybe not burning quite that much but he was really aggressive. And then........... not much. Granted the Ncst kid was game but Amine would've majored him had he kept the same pace and intensity. I think very highly of how Cam is wrestling overall. He will surprise many with how high he gets in March if he can keep that intensity and wrestle like he has a chip on his shoulder for 7 mins.

174- I think the first period of this match many had the same reaction that my wife had. "Whats wrong with Dean"? It's obvious his opponent was tough and had a game plan. It took a minute but Hamiti found his footing and started scoring. Singleton obviously didn't like it as he got a little heavy handed and out of sorts to no avail. Imo this kind of match is good for Dean.

184- Plott looked sluggish. Period. Could've been the week of practice but he was hand fighting extremely well and creating angles but it looked like one missed opportunity after another to get to legs. Maybe I was seeing things? Fishback is solid but Plott is 8 points better all day imo.

197- Surber looked good. A little sloppy here and there but was consistently creating offense. Thats what you like to see from a guy ranked 7th in the nation.

285- In many ways I put this match in the same category as Dean. Not the Wyatt were accustomed to seeing but a match he can really grow from. 7 mins of back and forth is only going to make him better when March rolls around.

So there it is, another 30+ dual score for the Cowboys. Gotta love it! Some good duals and tests ahead so lets all just continue to enjoy the ride!

Fartz out! ✌️

A couple of things to add after seeing the last few comments:

Yes Reece was winning the ranking matches.

No it was not Cael's inability to make the weight and hold it. He can. He pulls somewhat less than Tagen.

I think Reece is good enough to beat Orine. Not saying he would have but he has the skills to do so.

Reece can beat a lot of guys.....Reece can also get in very bad spots and lose to anyone..

In years past I'd agree. This year he's improved a ton.
Agreed but he still has that gunslinger mentality which will cost him at some point. See bedlam as an example vs his 2 losses at CKLV including getting pinned by the NCST backup and his crazy 3rd place match. Those are the kind of losses you can't have in Philly. It doesn't always end as glorious as bedlam did.

Reece probably shouldn't have wrestled at CKLV. That's how bad he hurt his knee the day before but someone didn't keep their weight down so they didn't get the opportunity they would've otherwise had. So all things considered Reece wrestled his ass off and got a lot of points for the team.

Things like this really cloud the decision on who starts…

Congrats on the solid win guys. I noticed that some of the usual monsters were fighting headwinds from difficult practices. You'll see a different team going forward as they begin the climb up toward nationals. I'm expecting it this week for my team too. Just part of the winning formula.

We (NCSU) are definitely going to have to go all out to keep it close. Our best guy at 125 (Robinson ) may be back tomorrow after a month long injury absence.
We have more holes in our lineup compared to last year, mostly due to two multi year starters (Arrington and Jack) redshirting this year. They’d be ranked in the 3-8 range nationally.
Our make a wish ceiling tomorrow is probably 5 matches, (125,133, 157, 184 , 285).. the floor is zero. I’m think we leave with around 10 team points. I met several of your wrestlers at the dual in Raleigh last year. Good dudes.
NCST really wrestled well. Pat Pop always does a great job at preparing his wrestlers. The matches were closer than the end score and you called it about Robinson
