(3) OK State v. (5) UNI

These Refs make the worst duo I've ever seen
Fish wins in overtime with a takedown. I thought are we going to blow another match when UNI got a takedown near the end of the 3rd period to take the lead. He (Fish) was so close to a reversal but was given an escape to get the match to overtime. Actually, we got an upset with Fish beating number 4 at 157 Downey. That win keeps us in the match

I think Keck is just an insurmountable obstacle at this point. Maybe if Plott had more time with this staff he’d be able to “crack” him in a year or two.

Amine gets 3 takedowns and the last 1 at the end of the match for a major. Good match for Cam. Hamiti gets a major despite giving up a unbelievable for him reversal at the end of the 2nd period. Dean still was impressive on his feet.
Plott gets destroyed by Keckeisen. He did hold on to not get teched. I remember hearing how Plott has improved so much under Taylor. I have to admit I don't see it. I do think Plott is great but he was at that same level last year when he took 2nd at Nationals.

Surber holds on for a 4 to 3 win. Surber got picked up and slammed to the mat but rolled with it and didn't give up points and scrambled to get a questionable take down. Maybe the proper description is bounced and then rolled to end up getting the takedown.

Hendrickson really wrestles and gets a 2nd period tech. Our transfers were big in this dual and saved us. We won but too many matches left me with a bad feeling and questioning our development. Still plenty of the season left.

Fish also had 98% of a takedown and seemed to let up and Downy scrambled and Fish did not get the takedown.

Overall - the last two duals the team has looked much different than the first half of the season - lethargic, slow, tired, feet in cement. Let's hope it's all part of the process for peaking in March.
In this case, UNI is just a really good team - IMO Hughes is the only one who actually wrestled much worse than expected. Would have loved Tagen to be more offensive, but that's how all of his matches with Happel have gone. Crazy that he's 0-4 against someone he's clearly on par with.

Great ROAD win vs a top 5 opponent in front of a record (for them) crowd. I don’t know if any coach has done more with less than Schwab has at UNI and clearly has dudes bought in. His antics in the corner sometimes vex me, but he’s a hell of a coach. I mean he got Keck to stick around and they don’t even have a gym right now! In another life he would’ve made a great cult leader.

Hughes was the only one whose match made me go “Come on, man. What are you even doing out there?”

Carter Young is who he is. His run at WTTs or whatever is looking more and more like an outlier. Daton has had some great insight on Dynasty Defined about how he doesn’t have a shot that goes THROUGH a guy, and it seems like others have caught on.

Tagen is gonna breakthrough on Happel one of these days. Maybe. I hope.

I feel bad for Plott. 9 out of 10 seasons and he’s far and away the best 184 in the country by a mile. He’s just got a poorly timed career that sees him competing with 1 (now 2 with Starocci) of who I believe are some of the best to ever do it. As much as he probably has grown with DT as his coach, he’s got 4-ish years of rolling with Chris Perry still in his system vs 8 months with the current staff. What could’ve been if he’d opted to redshirt (don’t blame him for not, though).

UNI is a good team. I wasn't trying to be hard on our team. I still stand by what I said. I think most everyone on the team the last two duals has looked lethargic and I believe it is part of the training process. The thing is guys like Hamiti or Wyatt can be lethargic and still kick the crap out of guys because they are just that good. Guys like Hughes, Jamison, Young can't be lethargic and dominate most guys. Just an observation.

Now imagine how good Keck would be if he was rolling around with better partners as well? Chris Perry used to stomp Plott in the practice room and one would argue he is as good as he is — in part because of Chris Perry.

Damn, Hamiti is good. Love the kid. What a talent. I think he can beat O’Toole and hopefully, Haines!

I agree 90%. haha I agree Hughes just did not look very good. Not sure if he is injured or if the weight cut is taking its toll on him. The other match I was disappointed with was Carter's. Not because he lost to a bad wrestler, because Realbuto is pretty good. But because Carter just can not seem to win close matches, he has had a lot of them this season end up an L. Everyone has a kryptonite and Happel is Tagen's. Tagen has really improved so much since last year and he is going to be fine. He will most likely have another shot at Happel at some point this year and I think this coaching staff and Tagen put together an attack plan that gets him the W. This UNI team is a very good team and they match up good against OK State. They will make some noise at Nationals for sure. Nothing for OK State to be upset about at all, they wrestled a good team and took some bumps and came out with the W. How about Fish, this guy has really turned it up since getting into the starting lineup! Very impressive lately!

I keep hearing people talk about this hell week. Thats just part of this program now. And you can not look to that for an excuse everytime you think the team did not look good. I highly doubt any of the wrestlers or coaches will use that as an excuse. Do you know what the maximum effective range of an excuse is? Zero Meters!
