His poll numbers would be very good in the general. His primary poll numbers are not good because the Trump faithful see him as an ungrateful traitor to their chosen one. How dare he think he’d be a better president than Donald Trump!
But in reality people liked the idea of him as a Trump alternative, until they learned more about him.
What makes you think someone who is trying to outflank Trump on the right, with no charisma, and a history of voting for Medicare cuts is going to fare better in the general election? What is the positive case?

People from all over the country flocked to Florida because they saw what kind of society he was defending against the collectivist onslaught. Desantis won in 2022 by a lot (but by less than Mike Dewine in Ohio in 22, who would be a vastly superior candidate)
