Basic civility greatly increases if there is a threat of physical altercations. That is why Okies are so much more polite than Coastal people. The meanest things ever said to me were from women for that very reason. There are some things a grown man just will not say to another one.
And just to add - I think the expectations of policing what others think my tribe must be and holding myself accountable for addressing anything any of them does or says preemptive to any foreseeable future conversation is freaking exhausting and boring.
