HS Recruiting News

Depth is nice, but it doesn't win team titles. PSU can afford to have AA caliber guys on the bench for multiple years. Maybe Iowa too, but most can't.

Practically speaking, we need to field the strongest starting lineup possible. Then hope they stay healthy and get them to peak for nationals. This includes not overtraining.

If both Young & Jamison are 141s, one of them will have to sit for at least 2 years. Possibly 3 years if Sammy Alvarez starts. Does that seem like a good use of resources? Instead we could have passed on Jamison, started Alvarez in '24, Young in '25/'26, & used the Jamison $ on a 157. It would also have set up 141 for Roller (or Zepeda) down the line.
1 in the hand better than two in the bush though lol

yea let's compare Young to guys like Zain and Ashnault 🙄🤯
The only comp is guys having more success at 149 than they did at 141 (after a redshirt). Thought that was pretty clear. A move up could work out well for Young.

You have Rutgers season tickets, right? If I was doing comps, I certainly wouldn't include Ashnault in the same group as Retherford. Ashnault waited until year 6 to bump up -- when Retherford had graduated. He wanted no part of Zain. Plus the move also avoided Yianni at 141. Seems like Mobbin' was dodgin'.

He ain’t committed to ASU (and likely never will)
I've been looking around for any sign of his commitment and haven't seen anything. Wondering if we're in on him? He's a stud and his little brother is real good as well.

Tyler Caldwell, Gary Wayne Harding, Coleman Scott, and Christian Carroll all followed Josh Humphreys on Instagram today along with a few other coaches from different schools. Might mean nothing but might mean something. I just thought it was interesting.
Mineo now saying he may not get the additional year and it is under appeal with the NCAA. Not sure how he cannot get it.

2018-19-Started as true FR. Lost in blood round.
2019-20-AA as a true So
2020-21-Missed the entire year due to injury. This is also the COVID year which was supposed to not count against eligibility, hence the multiple 5X AAs.
2021-22-Starter. Lost in blood round.
2022-23-Placed 3rd.

Just curious if you noticed which other coaches followed him. Most of the top schools already have a 157.

Trying to get a sense for who the main competition might be.

It is a reasonable expectation for Humprheys to assume he would be granted the year. Kemmerer, for one example, was given 7 years to wrestle 5 because he took (1) a traditional redshirt, (2) given a medical redshirt for the one season he missed, and (3) was given the covid extra year because he was healthy in 2020-21. Many other wrestlers are being given 6 years to wrestle 5 because they took a traditional redshirt and are being given the covid year. They never needed a medical redshirt to do this. If he were coming back this year, Travis Wittlake would be an example. This kid did not take a traditional redshirt and was injured only in the covid year. He is being given 5 years to wrestle 4 with the only difference being he was injured one specific year. Said another way, Humphreys and Wittlake started their college careers in the same year. Wittlake stayed (relatively) healthy while Humphreys missed a season due to injury, but it is Wittlake, and other healthy wrestlers, being given the extra year of eligibility. I might be missing something, so anybody please feel free to correct me. If not, this kid is getting a bad deal.

Hopefully he gets the extra year, but the odds might be against him.

The covid year gets tossed completely. So it doesn't matter if you wrestled, redshirted, got injured, or never enrolled. It's like the year never happened. That's my understanding anyway. If that's true then Humphreys got 4 years and would be done. Hopefully not because we could really use him.

Wonder why he waited so long to jump in the portal. Seems like odd timing.

Brayton Lee, I am not sure I have ever seen someone's wrestling career so negatively impacted by injuries. Hopefully he can stay healthy this season and get another AA. Would he be eligible for a medical redshirt?

That’s fair, still got a LONG way to go before this is a Championship caliber Line-Up.

Have to stack classes up which we have done a pretty good job at. The question I have is will Coleman add some new wrinkles to our style and development.

Whether that’s mindset, culture, or the way we build, push and develop the wrestlers who come to OSU. That has been an area we have somewhat struggled in and what needs the most change/improvement.

Hopefully those issues were acknowledge over this past off season and the Coleman hire was to address those issues and not just a future replacement for JS. Although he came from the OSU tree I think he will bring his own personalized approach to training and development. I also really really like the fact that Eric Guerrero is back in the room in some form. Lets not forget he was apart of the coaching staff back when we were winning titles.
