HS Recruiting News

Listened to the new dynasty defined podcast, liked that Dean Heil, Dakota Geer, gas tank Gary (Ohio state, Oregon state heavyweight ) are in the room. Blair’s is right look forward with the team we have now. Would like to be in the room to see the battle between Sammy, Jamison, and Willams.
This is great news. I rewatched one of Deans matches recently where he did one of his “barely win but frustrate his opponent to death by letting himself get nearly pinned but holding off the takedown so effectively that the NCAA made a rule against his signature move” things lol. Dude was tenacious

Final Rofkin class rankings and evaluation. Nothing new really but here’s the snippet on us.

“Evaluation: The only program to scoop three of the Top 10, OK State's class could also be considered the most college-ready. Up top, Thompson and Carroll both made JR World Teams and could be paying dividends as early as November. Hughes ended the year ranked #1 in the country at 132 and projects as an annual AA-caliber lightweight. Heeg and Robb provide some depth up top.

With four years remaining each, Spratley and Jamison both provide instant impact potential. Spratley made JR Trials finals the last two season and could be the 125 starter immediately. Jamison won Fargo two summer ago but has wrestled only sparingly since.”

Alright…time to go ahead and ask this…

There seems to be reason to be confident there is a potential solution out there at 157.

If there is not…repeat IF there is not, in order to fit what pieces are available together, could we see:

125: Spratley
133: Fix
141: Alvarez/Jameson
149: Jameson/Alvarez
157: Williams
165: Olejnik
174: Plott
184: Thompson
197: Surber
285: Carroll

Williams doesn’t seem physically ready for 157. If he has to go 157 I think he doesn’t do well, and it messes with his head/confidence etc.

I base that off his freestyle the last couple months. Would be shocking to me if he ends up there.

I think there is enough trusted insight right now to think Alvarez at 141 and Williams at 149 which I honestly think is best for both of them.

Alvarez at 141 is a legitimate AA candidate. Think he loses that up at 149 and have very little confidence Williams has much success up at 157. He can be dangerous in spurts at 149 IMO.

Looks like it will be a surprise and late addition at 157 or it will be a rough hole for us in 2023/24.

Spratly will start at 25 Jamison and Álvarez will battle it out. May the best man win.

I’ll take Jamison over Alverez at this point don’t forget Jaylin Harper has one more year also but I still look for a transfer 57

Hopefully Harper comes back if he still has eligibility. He was recognized at Senior Night (whereas Daton was not)…maybe it will be a similar situation to Gfeller last year.

You could do a lot worse than Harper.

Wish McLane would have stuck around.

Alverez is a very talented kid who has some relevant results to point to. If Jamison can push him or beat him then more power to him and is good news for us either way.

Harper is a serviceable veteran but isn’t a threat to score at nationals which is the hope. Will root for him if he is the guy.

The other potential wrinkle is Daton wanting to go 125.

He didn’t rule it out in his most recent interview and he did say he was for sure going 57kg to prep to make Olympics and would work all year at being in a good position for the cut.

Jalin Harper is a serviceable option at 157 and probably the best option we have currently on the roster to go that weight. He really would be just an experienced body to throw out there. Williams definitely isn't ready for 157. Question is can Jalin still make 157? He wrestled all his matches last year at 165 and will be going into his 6th year in the room if he returns. I still think we will end up with a late addition transfer to fill the spot. Probably not a name that will make any sort of splash though.

If Jalen wants to wrestle, he will make 57 he can’t beat the other two at 65

Getting Franek would be ideal, but other than that there aren't any other names out there I've seen that would make any impact. Am I missing a name someone knows of that could make a immediate impact?

Didn’t Williams just wrestle freestyle at 143 lb? Don’t see how he could make that cut and then roll 157 in just a few months. I mean it could be done.

I like Daton at 125. Vito is a beast. And 125 looks to have cleared out several seniors from last year. Plus it makes sense for Olympic weight. Would be a little disappointed not to see Spratley start though.

I really don't think Daton going 125 helps us much at all. He has finalist potential at 25 or 33, but who would be our 33 if he went down? I think Spratley is an AA candidate at 125, who besides Daton could AA at 133? Hughes is a stud, but I think he should sit behind Daton this year.

Daton possibly going 125 won’t be a decision made with the idea of what helps “us.”

The program will 100% back Datons goal to making an Olympic team. If he and the coaches believe wrestling more down to weight will do that then that’s what they will do.

I understand that and I wouldn't complain if that's what he or the coaches decide to do. With the way we've finished the last couple years I'm pretty sure the coaches want to maximize points though.

Daton will not be at 125 Spratley will be 125 Daton will go 133

Your right on point

I also saw the interview he was playing with those guys he said I could go 25, 33,41 maybe 49 he’s going 33 they’re not bringing in a guy with the quality of spratly and then having him set a year when the team is much better with Daton at 33

Lol, that's hilarious. Playing with the constant speculation

Having an Olympian vs placing higher at NCAAs, both are good things for our program

I don't see how Daton going 125 can really help him that much in making the Olympic team. Sure, his weight management would be well controlled and he could focus on other things before the trail, but I just don't think there is any big of a difference between 25 and 33 in college. If he is going to make the team he is going to have to beat Vito, Gillman etc. and wrestling Vito at NCAA's would only prepare him more IMO.
