92kg Qualif. - David Morris Taylor VS Abdulrashid Sadulaev (AIN)

Period 1:
DT in red & Sadulaev in blue. Sadulaev looking much trimmer. His singlet is even loose in the chest & under the arms. Here we go! Tying up & circling, Sadulaev snaps, nothing & back to the tie up. DT drops in on a leg, Sadulaev defending & gets away, back to neutral. Circling, tying up. Passivity warning Sadulaev, restart. DT shoots, Sadulaev threatening with a chest wrap & sprawls back. Sadulaev spins around, comes behind & gets a TD, 2-0, no turns, restart. Tying up, Sadulaev snaps, nothing. Circling & hand fighting, Sadulaev snaps & comes behind quickly for another TD, 4-0, looking for a turn, but no luck, restart, 3:46 left. Circling & tying up & pushing in the center & that's how the period ends. 4-0 Sadulaev

Period 2:
Kennedy & someone I don't recognize in DT's corner. Back to action. DT shoots, Sadulaev sprawls, stalemate, restart. Tying up DT pushing forward a little, then they're back to center. Sadulaev snaps, DT sprawls back & they're back to center. DT shoots, Sadulaev gets a chest lock & is trying to come behind for another TD, but takes DT out of bounds, 5-0, restart. DT shoots off the whistle, gets a leg, but Sadulaevu sprawls back & it's a stalemate. DT back in on a leg off the whistle, Sadulaev counters, they're scrambling & Sadulaev gets the TD, 7-0, restart. 1:25 left. Circling, DT shoots, nothing, DT shoots again, gets a leg, but Sadulaev sprawls back for a stalemate, restart. DT shoots again off the whistle, Sadulaev sprawls & it's another stalemate, restart. 42-sec left. Tying up, DT reaches for a leg, nothing. Sadulaev locked over the head & it's another stalemate. DT shoots again off the whistle, Sadulaev with another sprawl, and another stalemate, restart, 14-sec left & that's how it ends. Sadulaev was in control of the entire match. DT got to his legs, but couldn't do much else from there.

Abdulrashid Sadulaev DEC David Taylor 7-0

A little bummed at the result and hope DT is pulled back in with a chance at bronze. I would guess folks are going to argue a lot about whether Father Time has caught up with DT a bit, or if the change in training partners leaving NLWC affected his performance. My biggest takeaway is that Sadulaev is one of the best wrestlers of all-time. I don’t even understand how I’m the same species as that dude.

I don’t think it’s much more than DT wrestling a gold medal favorite who happens to be one of the better wrestlers of his generation in the first match.

The fact DT at his age was able to bump up a weight and run through the trials and earn the spot speaks to his ability even at his age and the benefits he has received in a new room with new partners and new mindset.

This whole thing has been a major win for him and the Cowboy program regardless of the outcome today and tomorrow.

Watching DT get completely skunked was surreal, I had to lookup when he last didn't score a single point and it was 9 years ago when he was one year out of college and probably a 79 wrestling 86. Father time is undefeated ... DT had hell of a career and this obviously does nothing to his legacy when he's 34.

Always the dream to go out on top but I predict DT is reenergized and the two matches before the 3/5 match will get him confident and he adds one final medal to his count.

Then after, as the saying goes, onto bigger and better things.

I never thought once about it reflecting on Cowboy RTC, or DT’s training partners. DT just started with OSU and has had a career with NLWC. There is no possible way DT would have been ready for that match, that had to be first round(👎🏻). Crappy luck. Good for him for tacking the chance.

Oh I 100% agree. I had just seen some of that kind of discourse cropping up on Twitter and didn’t understand the logic behind it.

Well, I just watched the semi-final match between Sadulaev and Ghasenpour and it looked very much like David was not going to get another match. Ghasenpour really dominated the mat against Sadulaev and had the only takedown to lead 3-1 when it looked to me that Ghasepour just stopped and froze with about 5 seconds left and Sadulaev took advantage and scored a last second takedown. It was challenged but the challenge was lost for a 4-3 win.

I hope that wasn't from PSU fans. The guys I converse with just simply agreed that Sadulaev coming down was too much for DT going up, and that DT training part time was no match for a potential all time great training full time. There is no mystery here. The bigger mystery would have been DT winning. Honestly. I have mad respect for DT but Sadulaev was always favored to win IF his shoulder was better. And it was. Same thing happened to Cael when he tried at Worlds as a coach.

I still rooted for DT though.
