Did The Last Chance Open Just Get (Dresser) Dumped?

I was looking at the new Selection Criteria Grid for this season and I noticed this addition:

Eligible Matches

Only results from nontraditional events that are registered in the NWCA Optimal Performance Calculator (OPC) system by September 1, and contested before January 1 of the respective academic year, shall be considered for selection and seeding for the Division I Wrestling Championships.

Additional Comments

This modification clarifies that the committee will not consider results from nontraditional matches that have become more common later in the season. This is consistent with the value the committee places on traditional formats, (dual meets, individual/dual advancement tournaments), and conference tournament participation to meet the selection criteria.

That seems to me like it is aimed directly at The Last Chance Open and similar "tournaments".

Cyclone Open was Jan 19 this year. They're trying to stop people from throwing together a last second tournament and also say we won't be counting extra matches. Some teams are still wrestling extra matches after duals

I'm only familiar with the Olympic qualifier Last Chance Open. What last chance open are you referring to? Is it to qualify guys for NCAAs who didn't wrestle during the season?

Yes. It was designed to get guys enough matches for an RPI. One year Dresser really abused it and arranged for a bunch of injury defaults for his guy so that he could pump up his win percentage. There was some blow back.

That's kinda funny that he did that. But that part of it would already be fixed as wins/losses against members of the same team don't count in seeding. At least, that's my understanding

That rule was changed in the 21-22 season.

The rule used to say:

Exhibition matches between teammates, against opponents who are not listed on an institutional roster, a club-level wrestler, a prospective student-athlete or an armed services student-athlete shall not be counted

Now it says:

Matches between teammates, against opponents who are not listed on an institutional roster, a club-level wrestler, a prospective student-athlete or an armed services student-athlete shall not be counted

They dropped the word exhibition. I think when it said exhibition they were talking about things like wrestle offs. By removing exhibition they now mean any match.

I think we can thank Kevin Dresser (and probably other coaches) for that one too.

And the funny thing is Dresser was on the rules committee and was telling them that rule should change and explained why but they didn't change it. So the next year he was off the committee and ran the tournament and did exactly what he told them could happen. Then once they saw it play itself out they changed the rule
