*** the story: when my sisters and I were very young, we lived on 40 acres. My parents raised us in the country...a hobby farm really, but a way of living, not a source of income. Had about 12 cows. During the calving season, one particular cow was always aggressive in protecting her calf. She'd run at us, snorting and being a prudent mother.
Well, my dad couldn't risk that cow, 221, accidentally succeeding in reaching one of us. (We called them by whatever number was on their tag (or whatever the color the tuft of hair on the top of their was.. "Red")) So, being the responsible and "handle your business" dad that he is, he took a 2x4 (read 'two by four'.... the measurements of a standard piece of lumber) into the pasture with him one morning and walked in her general area. Predictably she charged him, but instead of running, he sidestepped the charge and broke the 2x4 across her forehead.
Obviously didnt hurt her, that part of the Brangus skull is considerably thick, but it shocked her enough that she never charged us again.

I've been told by Mennonites the 2x4 is how they get their horses to mind. Supposedly they take a recalcitrant horse and hit it upside the head with the 2x4. Once the horse gets off the ground and recovers the Mennonites can get the horse to do whatever they want.
