I know STW won but did anyone get to see it and care to share some thoughts?

I watched the replay of it. All of the OSU commits looked good. The match between Hughes and Blankenship was really good. Very intense. There were also about 3 guys that are uncommitted that we are targeting. Angelo Ferrari, LaDarion Lockett, and Jace Roller. All looked very good. Angelo and Lockett will be studs. Roller will probably be good too. He pinned his guy in like 30 seconds or something. Though I think he was wrestling a backup.

I’ve watched the Angelo match probably three times now and I hate to put too much into one match but he may end up being the best of the three.

Was there in person, Stillwater dominated. couple matches could have went the other way. Lockett won by 6, but was never really in danger, Garrett Washington, really good kid, long and strong.
Roller - not sure who who he wrestled, but won by fall in 10 to 15 secs
Landon Sommers??? - won, wrestled Christian Kaiser, one point match - really think Kaiser wins the match later in the season once he has more of a gas tank
McComas - won big
Jersey Robb - won by pin
Kael Voinovich - did not wrestle
Anthony Ferrari - did not wrestle
Clayton Giddons - did not wrestle

if they meet at dual state, i think the result will be the same, but a lot of different matchups will make it very interesting

I don't know which Ferrari ends up having the best career. But to me Anthony seems the most aggressive. You're in for a fight when you wrestle him. That's a good thing.
Speaking of Anthony I wonder what weight he will wrestle for Stillwater this year if he comes back. Seems like 170 would be the weight which it may be he does not weigh 170. Angelo really jumped a level at Super 32's.

Anthony certified on Track so he's eligible to compete again now. He made 152 for certification purposes, likely because of the post surgery weight loss discussed on here earlier. He probably goes 170 or 160, with Angelo going the other.

We haven’t won a title in a long long time. Give me their Attitude every single time if it brings Titles.
I’d like to agree but I feel like Terry Brands time at Iowa ends with him punching someone…referee, athlete, fan, etc. I think Iowa has won their titles despite having him. We are right in the hunt for titles and this team is young. The Oklahoma pipeline appears to be full. Need to stay healthy.

It can definitely be taken too far. I would just as soon not have a Terry Brands type fool within our program.
I can think of a lot of words to describe Terry, but swagger isn't really one of them. I'm talking about uber confidence.

Surber was asked if having AJ as a training partner was helpful. He answered yes and also mentioned how hard AJ works. But he said the biggest thing he's learned from AJ is his confidence. That when he steps on the mat he's not going to hold back. You need talent obviously. And hard work. But this team needs an injection of confidence to win the team title IMO.

At this time AJ and the other Ferrari's are setting us up for a potential team championship. AJ has been the most important recruit maybe forever for the Cowboys. We had the first 4 timer and we have a chance for the first 5 timer. AJ has fun with his stuff unlike Terry Brands. Up to this point any Cowboy wrestling fan should love that AJ is a Cowboy and support him.

Lots of Oklahoma studs coming through…half from Stillwater. Lockett looked slick but needs to tone it down a notch. His recent success may have gone to his head by the looks of the Bixby match.

So were the Brands bros crazy like they are now even when they were wrestling or is that just since they became coaches?

Stillwater & Bixby will be at Geary this weekend. Edmond North too. Should be some good matches. I think Rokfin is streaming this year.

I can’t wait to get a couple of more of these brothers in the lineup. I’m sure they rub some people the wrong way, but they walk the damn walk.
In thinking back to Anthony's big matches in the last couple of years he is right on the edge of being the best in his weight class. There has been an ounce of confidence or focus that has cost him to lose razor thin matches with the best. If he gets this ounce of confidence or focus with his talent, aggression and work ethic he will be a National Champion like AJ. Angelo found this at super 32's this year. In the future I think this would turn out best for us Anthony at 157, Jordan Williams at 165 and Angelo at 174.

The Brand brothers wrestling were focused on breaking their opponents and that was an obsession. Which meant they worked like crazy men and wrestled like wolverines in matches and they were darn near unbeatable. Kendall Cross lost many times to the brothers but he also beat both in very important moments of each of their careers. Tom Brands would have been a 4 time champion except Kendall beat him 1 to 0 at Nationals 1 year( unbelievably Tom Brands chose neutral if I remember right). Terry of course lost to him in the Olympic trials at Terry's peak which crushed Terry. Kendall won because of his great wrestling abilities but also it seemed Terry would get lured into throw situations with Kendall ( which was likely the only way Kendall could win). Terry's ego and his desire to break an opponent cost him and Kendall threw Terry for big points in those matches and then Terry would come back with takedowns but just got nosed out. Kendall said in an interview he hated wrestling Terry because he would put Kendall through hell and push Kendall near the break point. I think I remember a match in college where Ton Brands did break Kendall( just wrecked him but I believe that was the year Kendall beat Tom at Nationals). The Brands brothers have been in wrestling for a long time and will likely be in wrestling for a long time.

Kendall's win over Tom Brands.

Kendall's win over Tom Brands.

That has to be the most exciting 1 to 0 match of all time. Great defense by both wrestlers but Kendall pulled some miracles in a couple of situations not giving up the takedown. I think Kendall had a nickname Gumby because of his flexibility but also like John was much stronger than he looked. I think Brands was worried about Kendall getting his legs in and just could not believe he couldn't take Kendall down and so made a big mistake taking neutral. Great win for the Cowboys and Kendall. Cross did win Nationals that year.

And the 1996 trials win over Terry. 2 big wins by Kendall over the Brands as you said.

Thanks tfpoke. I know they used to come down for it.
You're welcome. Don't know how accurate that is, but that's what's posted on their facebook page.

"I'LL TAKE YOU OUT!" ... and then go to jail.

Terry's ego and his desire to break an opponent cost him and Kendall threw Terry
His ego also cost him in the 2000 Olympics. He refused to concede an imminent takedown and gave up a feet -to-back: match over => no yellow medal.
Then again, this same confidence certainly had a lot to do with why he was in the position to wrestle for NCAA, World, and Olympic titles in the first place.

It might just come down to aesthetics: some folks like Barry Sanders, and some folks like Cam Newton.

Re Bixby vs Stillwater: one thing the match reminded me of is that Oklahomans take their high school sports seriously. I grew up in Bixby and remember how the crowds, coaches, and wrestlers turned it to 11 for big matches. E.g. the series of matches between Keith Nix and Mike Bodily. When Bixby won the 4A title in 86 (?) the whole town seemed to get into the championship photo. The overall impression was that these high schoolers were playing for adult rewards.

I moved to VA in 6th grade and there was a completely different atmosphere. HS sports were games kids played after school. No coaches were going to lose their jobs if they didn't bring home a title. In fact, as long as you didn't beat your kids, your coaching position was secure until you got tired of showing up. The difference was no where more evident than when Midwest City came to the VA Duals (90?) and kicked the crap out of Kempsville, VA (VA big school state champs?). I think it was in the final, and the Bombers won 12 of 13 matches (lost HVY). The result wasn't surprsing: that Midwest City team was an all-time great group. What was surprising is how Kempsville handled their total embarrassment: smoking and joking.
