In the early to mid 1980’s Bill Murray was the golden boy. He had parlayed his spot on SNL into movie stardom. As such he could have any role he wanted. It turned out in 1984 he insisted on playing Larry Darrell In the movie version of The Razor’s Edge, based on the magnificent novel by Somerset Maugham. (I remember reading the book as a very young man in 1969 and thinking I wanted to be just like Larry Darrell.)

Well, it turned out the movie was a flop. Siskel & Ebert both panned the movie, and made it plain it pained them to do so because they both adored Bill Murray. Siskel, I remember, thought Murray was the wrong guy for the role because up until that point in his career he had played only funny men. Siskel pointed out that when you hear the name “Bill Murray” you automatically smile because he has been such a funny and endearing character. Nobody could see him as the serious person that Larry Darrell was. It didn’t fit and that’s why the movie was a failure.

I think that is the same reason why Joe Biden will not get the nomination. He’s the lovable gaffe machine, Uncle Joe, someone you find it impossible to take seriously. And being president is a deadly serious role to play. Joe is simply not a good fit. The Democrats need to look elsewhere.

Joe is a buffoon and he's also what my Mom used to call a 'masher' someone who can't keep their hands off women and girls.

The only alternative to Joe are socialists. I may be delusional but I just don't see a socialist winning in the midwest which is what must happen to take the Presidency.

Strongly recommend the book. It will alter your outlook on the meaning of life.

I don't know, when I was 19 a blonde in Memphis wearing fishnet stockings, a hit of acid each and a bucket of Ice at a Hotel we stayed at downtown altered my outlook of the meaning of life pretty good.
And no I knew her she was not a Lamar Ave Hooker. :D

This song came out a few years later, to a T!

Boy, how much do you miss Siskel and Ebert today. Love the youtube episodes. That was intelligent television with solid debates and analysis. You don't see that kind of television anymore unless you watch BBC or something.

Speaking of Roger Ebert, I caught the 'Apocalypse Now Director's Cut' version tonight on IMAX. It was one of the best films ever made according to Ebert and made even better on IMAX. Showing it again on Sunday. Highly recommended.
