I thought WH had as much of a chance to beat GS as the USA chances against the Russkies in hockey. What an upset.
I saw some UNI fans cheering pretty hard in the ESPN crowd shots.
Gable is rarely if ever challenged and frankly felt like he was overconfident. He teched Wyatt the last time they faced each other.
Wyatt was all in with just over 50 seconds and seemed to have more gas in the tank to attack. The additional 30 lbs, level of training and complete focus on wrestling made all the difference for Wyatt. He’s a completely different animal.
That was also back in 2021 when WH was a freshman.
Kinda reminds me of this famous finish, especially when Steveson is trying to get up in the final 10 seconds and Wyatt takes him back down to the mat. Watch from 1:50 to 2:05 and tell me it doesn’t give you chills!

I didn’t mind Gable until he talked smack before the match. Dude deserved to get beat! Does he not know Wyatt’s academy connection? Not just some random dude wearing a flag.

I thought the same thing. Sure looked like John but thought that it would have been kinda odd. I think he dressed in the same type of shirt and vest that JS often wore when he was coaching.

He's easily the best OSU wrestler ever. Uetake's path to the national title was not as difficult as Wyatt's.
I respect your opinion of course. Wyatt scored more points than Uetake as well. Duals and tournaments.

I disagree, it's not the Wrestler with the most Outstanding Career it's the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament.
Agree totally. And to imagine we brought in 2 transfers who had 1 year left and they both beat not 1 but 2 returning national champs on their way to a natty. Obviously beating Stevenson trumps it with a gold medal but wow what a difference DT has made. If I’m a portal wrestler who has a strong will and an upside, osu is the place for you!
That is the way it should be. But all too often they look at the whole body of work over a career. Cost Chris Pendleton a MOW award as well. Wyatt deserved it based on this tournament alone. Starocci beat a guy he had already beaten this year. Wyatt beat a guy who most folks considered unbeatable, and pinned everyone else.
The last 5 minutes include post match was exactly what OSU needed. So proud he got to spend time with the President and how both reacted was special. The coaching staff just made some big time recruiting and portal moments.

Izzak Olejnik kept Hamiti from being an AA last year. Hamiti made quite a leap from blood round loser to National Champ.
The change of scenery, weight class, training, etc. made all the difference in the world.
True, but the two locks to win this tournament and two top candidates for Hodge were starocci and Gable. Hendrickson beat one of the favorites. His numbers had him in contention for Hodge all year. The only other thing Starocci had on him was past performance and I’m pretty sure that should not count for the Hodge. It should be based on the body of work that year. Correct me if I’m wrong
