After Mike Gundy sent quarterback Garret Rangel out for much of the second half against Utah, the head coach was quick to affirm Alan Bowman’s place as a starter. Oklahoma State’s head coach spoke of Bowman’s temporary benching as a reset for the seventh year player.
It helped that Rangel struggled while Bowman nearly led the Cowboys to a late comeback.
When the Cowboys lost 42-20 at Kansas State last week, reporters asked Gundy if he thought of playing either backup late in the game. The head coach said he never considered it.
“I don’t think that’s what’s best at times for what we’re trying to get accomplished offensively,” Gundy said.
What changed since then?
Certainly not Oklahoma State’s chances of winning on Saturday considering Rangel didn’t take the field until there was only one minute left in the third quarter. At the time, Oklahoma State trailed 31-7.
Rangel completed 4-of-5 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Bowman finished the day 10-of-19 for 116 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Easily his worst throw of the day came when Oklahoma State’s special teams set him up on West Virginia’s side of the field and Bowman tossed an interception on second-and-8 on the West Virginia 23-yard line.
Instead of getting points, Bowman threw an interception so directly to the defender that it seems as if he missed the guy entirely.
