Who is our next Head Coach?

I don't think the university could even consider making a change unless they had a better choice (and I don't see any now) or John says it is time. While we have been without a NCAA title longer than I would like, all schools (other than ohio st and Iowa) have as well and there is not a coach that would have made a difference unless you think he could have ended up with Taylor, Ruth, Nolf, and Nickal in Stillwater.
Does anyone think John would have brought in Max Dean over Dakota Geer at 184 pounds? Or if say Mason Parris wanted to transfer would he bring him in over Surber?

Mason Parris might be a possibility as he is a good bet to be AA and we don't have one. I am not sure if Dean is an AA? and although probably higher ceiling than Geer, Dakota is a multiple time AA, so I would not do that.

Maybe I have forgotten some, but the only transfer situation like this I recall is Cale Byers coming in when Blake Rosholt was returning. Controversial (at least from Jakes point), but John let Byers wrestle at 197. I don't know the results in the room or remember if they had ranking matches or the decision was based on performance against common opponents, but Byers finished 3rd at NCAA I believe.

Dean is also a multiple time AA and he finished 2nd last time around. No offense to Geer but if I had to choose I’d take Dean.

Yes.

and Dean has 2 years of eligibility. It would be a clear upgrade. The guy is going to be a finalist and he's in the wrong weight class.
Ya real smart take the guy that has never made a final . Whittlake has been a consistent winner wouldn’t be surprised if out places Wick this year.

Curious, what is the case against Perry as Head Coach?

I have heard from good sources that he is the guy John wants and that will carry a bunch of weight. The positives are it does seem like our recruiting really picked up as he was promoted and he and Caldwell pumped new life into that area. He also appears to have that relentless drive he had as a competitor. John knows coaches and can pick great ones so his endorsement (if indeed is Perry) should make you feel good.

The downside is he hasn’t spread his wings and learned different techniques and ways to have success. He will have no experience actually running and managing a program. He would be getting chosen over several guys with big time pelts on the wall and golden coaching pedigrees.

What technique is he not coaching?

Technique was a poor choice of words when typing a quick response.

I’m more so talking getting experience under different head coaches who all have different styles in how they build, train and develop their wrestlers. Nothing wrong with having all your experience under one of the best to ever do it but getting some deferent perspectives could be beneficial.

Their is no secret technique or style . When this is being said on this forum it just sounds ridiculous.
Not technique so much as maybe just different philosophy’s on coaching styles. You have several different approaches to training, practice, weight management etc.

Secondly, We got a better chance of watching OU win a national championship (in wrestling) than watching John Smith get fired. I will put my support in whoever it is that takes over the job because you can’t name someone in the sport who’s more knowledgeable than John Smith.

I know Perry has been exposed to a lot of wrestling over the years and Im sure John has a plan for himself and the program. He’s got so much emotional/physical investment that he wouldn’t leave the wrestling program in a bad spot.

The main focus should be on improving and funding the RTC program. That brings older, experienced talent in the room for the guys to learn and scrap with.

Rob Koll has talked about how the role has changed. He said today many good HS & club coaches know technique as well as college coaches. Also said having 5 fully endowed assistants makes you 5x as productive. That's why he has focused on fundraising, alumni relationships & administration support. It's really more of a CEO role now. Get the $ and then put the right people in the right positions.

Training philosophy is an interesting topic. Tony Ramos was on the Wrestling Changed My Life podcast. He said when he was at Iowa they did a ton of live wrestling in practice and spent very little time on showing technique. When he went to UNC, Coleman explained OSU's style of teaching detailed technique & then repeated drilling. Ramos called it iron sharpens iron vs. death by a thousand cuts and said they've tried to combine the two at UNC.
