Would have to be someone HUGE to make a change.

Short List:
Jordan Burroughs
Kyle Dake
David Taylor
Kyle Snyder

Who knows if these guys can coach but we will have to have a big time name to compete with Cael at Penn State.

Our problem has way more to do with alumni/administration support than it does coaching. I hate losing duals as much as the next guy, but this could be the wake up call this team needs. I would much rather peak in March than January.
I know this is a joke of a thread, but you are only partly correct.

I love OSU and OSU Wrestling and I've received exactly zero phone calls including return calls when it comes to support and tcikets. That's were admin can be blamed...that's it.

John doesn't do much in regards to influence fan/alumni involvement and won't act aggressively towards RTC.

We don't need a new coach, we need a plan of action to involve fans and admin...the support is there.

How about our 1980’s approach to selling tickets day of matches? We have to make it as easy as possible to get into duals.Everytime is try to buy one it is at least a 15 minute wait in line and then once I get to the window they click and type on a computer for 5 minutes to print a $5 ticket! Newsflash if we are not wrestling Iowa or PSU it won’t even be half full.Have a stack of $5 tickets sitting there and get the line moving!!!!

Until our HC and admin get behind and aggressively attack funding and setting up a strong RTC we will continue to be on this outside looking in when it comes to national titles.
There are a number of things that need to change/improve. Some of them have been mentioned in the other thread, but this is #1 by far.

Rob Koll literally said PSU's success is due to them having $9M in assets. When Braedan Davis committed, he was asked what impressed him most and he answered their "resources". And $9M in resources goes a long way. Like scooping up Jimmy Kennedy as an extra coach when he was forced out at NW. Or plugging holes with the transfer portal.

Also, there's been a lot of discussion about PSU's development, but they've had plenty of misses too. The Alton twins and Gulibon were top 10 PFP, but didn't meet expectations. Beard & Joe Lee wrestled in WNO and finished as top 20 PFP recruits. They didn't develop despite greyshirting and redshirting, so they were replaced by Dean & Berge. Same with Seth Nevills. He finished as the #22 PFP and didn't develop, so he was replaced by Kerkvliet.

Wait a darn minute! I've been rattling this cage for the better part of 4 years, or more. Each year it's wait till next year, our recruits are great and we're getting better. BS. OSU hasn't won a NC since '06. It ain't going to happen with this coach, and his plan of action. I'm sorry, because I like John, but he isn't getting it done, regardless of how many world titles he won.

Have you donated to the RTC ? It’s a group effort if we want the change .

How about the National Championships he won coaching?

I have personally talked to those within our program and offered to help raise money. I have donated directly to several of our sports programs including wresting.
It seems they are giving an effort with the poker game at the HOF . Hopefully everyone is trying to help .

I don't think it's any secret we haven't tried to raise RTC $ to this point.

A few people have posted on here that they've never been contacted to donate. Two years ago, I left voicemails and emails with the wrestling office inquiring about options to donate - never heard back. And the tweets about the casino night fundraiser were the first RTC tweets since Dec 2019. Heck, Daton won a world silver medal and nothing was tweeted about it.

Hopefully changes are in the works. Besides the casino night, there's also the new RTC website being developed.

Can any of those guys teach us how to get off bottom? We stink at that.
I understand your tone here, but the quip points to a larger truth. The team has been doing the same thing in the front office and inthe practice room for years. They've had diminishing returns for a decade, e.g. Jamal Parks couldn't get off the bottom either, and the only thing the coaching staff seemed to learm from this is that Parks didn't try hard enough? E.g. Chris Perry's boots never turned anybody, and the coaching staff is like, "Fix, go ride 'em like Perry."

I'm using technique examples, but aren't we seeing the same mentality with recruiting decisions (accolades over upside), the RTC (it's unfair), building a staff (keep it in the family), commitment to senior level athletes?

Any Ok State alum would return to coach. The only coaches that are off limits would be the Brands Brothers, Cael Sanderson, and Tom Ryan.
I think resources are a factor, but we could probably get the money with an all out effort. There are contributors for wrestling that have already given to OSU in amounts totaling for more than $5 million and I bet they would go again with a plan. Those are just the ones I know of.
John knows what he is doing on the mat, but no coach bats 100% in recruiting. I do think recruiting follows money and resources that will make champions.

I was surprised how laid back coach was in the interviews. He did not seem real concerned or as mad as I expected.I would be calling out 90% of the team.

I'm not sure that we need a coaching change but it's obvious that something is missing.

However, I am suprised that no one has mentioned Mark Branch. Is he too old? Also, I don't believe we should ever have a non-OSU Alum as coach. I don't know what the current count is for OSU Alum wrestling coaches is right but I would go there first.

I read somewhere that we haven't won since Pat Smith & Mark left? Is that a coincidence or is there something to it?

Certainly an OSU alum would give the feels but it's good to be open to outside hires if we want to be serious about creating a new legacy and not just honoring an old legacy. Not saying one is more likely than the other to compete for NCs. I've long thought Dieringer would be a solid option, considering his success at the senior level. He's probably the most decorated, most recent graduate we have. Daton could be an option too - let's not forget how young John was when he started coaching at OSU. Or one of the Ferrari kids if they have the kind of success that would bring in recruits and mesh well. Pendleton, Branch, Coleman, Pop, there's plenty of alums doing good work and maybe one of them would want to come lead the helm. Unfortunately I do agree that while our assistant coaches seem to be great at many things including being involved with youth wrestling and connecting with young wrestlers, I'm just not sure that the star power or the ability to get funding is there.

John Smith is one of if not the best coach in America. Sure for some reason we wrestled poorly this past weekend. Still a lot of season left. I believe that we will win a very competitive Big12 and then finish with a trophy in the NCAA

It's going to be Perry. However, every single coach from John's tree wants the job. The admin would be stupid not to interview:

Pat
Coleman
Branch

And it really should be a battle among those 4. I think it would be foolish not to hire Pat - consider what he's doing with WAY less resources than he'd have at OSU.

I don't believe for a moment that there would ever be a change with out Smith retiring. Can you imagine a world where the best wrestler in history and one of the most sucessfull coaches ever is "let go"?
I don't think the university could even consider making a change unless they had a better choice (and I don't see any now) or John says it is time. While we have been without a NCAA title longer than I would like, all schools (other than ohio st and Iowa) have as well and there is not a coach that would have made a difference unless you think he could have ended up with Taylor, Ruth, Nolf, and Nickal in Stillwater.

Imagine a staff of

Pat or Coleman
JO - littles
Dieringer - middles
Mocco - heavies

ESPO and Chris Perry - recruiting machines!
