Downside? Their impact on the environment is rarely a focus, like rare earth metals and that they are running mostly on natural gas and coal (today). Infrastructure has a long way to go.

When people talk about climate change and fossil fuels they focus on the downside. When they talk about EVs they talk about the upside.
You are out of touch on this one. Money for exploration and production is not an investors opportunity these days. Exploration and production is a planned and precisely calculated move by very well informed people within the major oil companies. Their risk assessment may differ a little but the end game is much the same. These investments in exploration and production are jeopardized or taken off the table when a feckless old idiot in the WH places obstacles that jeopardizes the long term viability of the investment. Shareholders of major oil companies are happy do keep doing what got them there...investing in future production.
