US OPEN

Hughes lost in the quarters I believe.

Carroll into the finals. Guy is crazy strong and fast for his size.

Thompson knocked out in semis. Honestly just was gassed. Wish they would’ve stopped for the night after quarters.

Some solid guys incoming that’s for sure

Williams lost to ISU's Johnson, he's in the consolations now.

Bixby's Gage Walker lost to Jax Forrest 10-10 on criteria. Very good match. That should get his phone ringing.
Walker’s phone should be ringing already!

Bixby is doing a terrific job right now in their room with these kids.
For 20 and under Hughes lost a match in the quarters he shouldn't have to a wrestler I never heard of and that opponent got teched in the semi's. Cael got a takedown to take the lead in criteria with 7 seconds left but lost his balance and got pulled over giving up the takedown. Hopefully he gets his payback in the consolations. Williams wrestled okay but got beat by Johnson as he did last year in the quarters. Then Johnson got teched by the 10th seed in the semi's. Carroll looked good getting to the finals but had a close match with Mora of NDSU. Thompson lost to the Minnesota kid getting double legged when on the shot clock in the second period in the semi's. Thompson beat Nebraska's starter in the quarters. Lockett looked real good in the 17 and under and is in the finals. One of the Cortez brothers beat Bassett but then lost to Knox in the semi's. We need our guys to do well in the consolations.

The kid that beat Hughes will be a sophomore at Iowa. Went 17-8 last year during a redshirt so we can chalk that up to just the gap between HS and College IMO. A match Hughes should win 9/10.

I get the feeling that Williams is stronger with Folkstyle? He looked good still for the most part.

Carroll just looked gassed against Mora. The only one he really got tired in. Also the only one that went full time I guess.

Thompson tough loss but again just gassed and it was a great double leg. I think going up 1-0 in the first wasn’t good for his mentality that late in the day. Def wasn’t as aggressive as he was earlier.

Which brings me to my next thought. I get this is an open but they should’ve called it a day after quarters IMO. The semis were not the level of wrestling these kids were capable of. It was a challenge of stamina which is cool and all but I want the technique to be the deciding factor.

Hughes just beat Fugitt (OU signing) 8 to 4 and in freestyle Fugitt was seeded ahead of Hughes. Good win.

I just watched Williams lose a match that he was ahead 4 to 0 with 25 seconds left and he gets into these situations where he ties up gets stuck in a wizzer deal( not his strength) and loses 2 takedowns and the match. Painful for him and painful for me to watch. We have too many wrestlers instead of finding ways to win they find ways to lose. Jackson Arrington was his opponent seeded 13 but I have heard of him, good wrestler. Jordan Williams is quick why he put himself in not good positions for him is hard to understand. He did it twice in a short period of time. When Jordan was younger he was called the iceman because he found ways to come back and win. Not today. Also not great coaching, I think they should have been yelling for Jordan to move. I still remember his matches last year with Panera Johnson running thru Jordan's wizzers like it wasn't there.

Ben Mowers lost by tech to the Volker from Iowa State ( no match). Kolter Burton got teched by 1 of the Cortez brothers with takedowns. Burton was very outmatched.

I really like those Cortez brothers, don't know if we're after them or not but we should have a good shot since they're from gilroy.

Williams seems to lose focus and intensity at times. Not a real inspiring match from him.

Hate to say it because it’s a cop out but Williams can stall a lot more in folkstyle than he can in freestyle and wins both the matches he lost probably.

Thompson beat the lighter Mirasola brother easily 6 to 1, good win. He got 2 takedowns to 0.
It looks like Cael Hughes forfeited or something because his expected opponent advances without having a match. I wanted to see more Hughes matches but not how it works out.

I think he could beat the Iowa kid but Johnson seems too strong and too explosive for Jordan. I watched them wrestle in freestyle 3 times in the last year and he can't get a takedown on Johnson.

Oklahoma boys wrestling for 1st and 3rd at U17 71kg. Lockett looking dominant as ever but is facing Bouzakis who has looked equally dominant. Routledge is facing the 2nd seed Knaak, and had to avenge a loss to one of Askren’s crew to get the 3rd place match.

Pretty damn good showing for the state at that weight.

Johnson is a bad matchup for a lot of people. He's stout, strong, explosive, and powerful. JW could eventually be an upgrade for OSU at 149 - that said, VV matches up better against Johnson.

Yes he can still go and win it, but it will not get him to Final X. This is the first year the us open winner goes straight to Final X. Not sure if they will still have a true second or true third match though. Wouldn’t make a lot of sense to make Chance wrestle him again if he loses to JB but I’m all for it.
there are no world team trials for weights with a returning medalist, are there?

Correct. 61 and 125 didn’t medal last year. 92kg was Cox, but he has moved up to 97 in prep for ‘24 Olympics so it is open as well. The other 7 weights are set for Final X. Not sure what the WTT does here for those 7 but maybe to establish a true third?

I believe that's correct. I don't know if they could've made the process any more complicated than it is.
Between Final X, WTT, US Open, and previous qualifications... I can't keep up lol

there are only two weights for mens freestyle scheduled to be wrestled at the WTT-61 and 125 kg. (3 WFS, 10 Greco) The weights that have a returning medalist sitting in Final X will not be contested. Can't find anything about 92, but seems likely they will add that since Jden moved up a weight.

Fix is qualified by being a previous word team member. Hopefully healthy.

others qualified include Gross, Nashon Garrett, Vito, Desanto, Tomasello, Colon, and Aden Valencia. With Vito already sitting in Final X, doubt if he shows up :)
