U.S. Open Championships April 23rd-27th

That’s the reason I’m not a big fan of freestyle rules. Those 10 “back” points scored against Plott are bullshit. I understand that’s the rules but they are bullshit rules. In no way shape or form is the aven a remote possibility that you could ever oin someone in that manner and to call that shoulder exposure is a joke,
I really like the freestyle rules except for this one. I think once you turn a guy with a move to get more back points you should have to release that hold and hook it up again like in collegiate wrestling.

Shot clock rule is really really stupid. Push out rule is sort of silly to.

The fact you can grab a guys ankles, roll around and win also keeps FS from really grabbing the casual fan.

Thompson had Welsh as his opponent who is tough but lost 5 to 0. People say the negative about Welsh is he has no offense. He appears to be an offensive machine compared to Thompson. I don't know the percentages of fault( I assume it is mostly on Thompson) but it does not appear that he has developed at all in Stillwater. That includes his half of a year in high school. Mentally he seems to struggle, and he did not have 1 good attack. Plott won also.
I wonder if DT sees something in Thompson to keep him around.

I agree on the multiple back exposures in a row. I don't agree on the step out - I would rather collegiate rules have a step out rule instead of a stalling on the edge being left up to the ref. The 30 second passivity clock I could take or leave.

An offensive strategy to try to push someone is silly and doesn’t help create or reward offense.

I understand wanting to penalize edge wrelsting but I think you are rewarding the wrong things.

Why is it silly? It is the entire goal of sumo wrestling. It is a very clear an unambiguous rule. If a wrestler is strong enough and technical enough and has the mat awareness and control to move his opponent from the center all the way to the edge and his opponent can't stop him he should be rewarded for that. Also how would you fix stalling on the edge?

Or you have the case I saw in Teague’s match where he was in on a shot and driving the opponent backwards but the opponent got in a hip lock and twisted so Teague touched out of bounds first and the opponent got the point for running backwards smartly.

Good job of countering by his opponent.

I agree it was a good counter but that doesn’t make it worth a point. The last takedown in the match where Teague was in on the legs and they both ended up getting 2 back points was also a joke. This is supposed to be wrestling, not some pansy ass hybrid between wrestling and gymnastics where you get style points.

There are literally hundreds of styles of wrestling in the world and different ways to score in each style. Forcing your opponent to expose his back is a big deal in freestyle. I don't think John Smith or David Taylor would agree that freestyle is a pansy ass sport.

Didn’t say it’s a pansy ass sport, I said that in my opinion there are some pansy ass rules that don’t lead to actually trying to pin your opponent. A leg lace is very rarely going to lead to an actual fall which is what i was thought was the ultimate result in wrestling. Everyone has their favorite style. When I was a much much younger I loved trying to wrestle Greco, but as a spectator, other than the big moves, I find it a little boring to watch. That is not meant to denigrate the participant, I just won’t spend much time watching it. I feel the same way about freestyle with the rules that exist today. Those are the rules, so I absolutely don’t criticize the wrestlers or coaches for doing their best under those rules, I just prefer collegiate (folkstyle) much more and will, spend much more time and effort to watch those matches.

And forgive me for being a crotchety old man😁

I get it. I don't like allowing consecutive laces or gut wrenches personally. However there are also lots of rules in collegiate that do not promote pinning people. Riding time does not promote pinning people. There are lots of tilts in collegiate that never result in pins etc...

Things aren't starting out so well with Vega not in the tournament and some uninspiring wrestling but we have Robideau, Lockett, Merrill, Ross and Jax coming up. I watched Lincoln Robideau win his 1st match by tech. He just overpowered his opponent.
Anyone know why Vega is not wrestling?

Dee starts off with a double leg that I thought should've been 4. 2-0. Then a duck under to trap-arm gut. 6-0. Denny exposes Dee and then Dee reverses. 7-2. That ends the first period.

Second period. Dee gets an ankle and takedown. Denny hit for fleeing (I think). 10-2 and Denny has to start in par terre. Dee gets a gut to finish 12-2 tech in 3:47.

Ethan Teague (21 seed) vs. Collin Guffey (12 seed). Teague gets a crotch lock and turns him over early. Later in the first period, Teague gets a TD that's called off for going before the whistle (I didn't think he was early). No matter, he gets a TD off the very next whistle. Teague up 4-0 to end the first.

Second period. One minute left, Guffey chest wrap and turns Teague over for 2. Teague reverses for 1, but appears to have hurt his shoulder. 5-2. Taking injury time. With 15 seconds left Guffey gets another turn off a chest wrap. 5-4. Now 7 seconds left... Again in the chest wrap and again Guffey turns Teague. Challenge brick thrown because it was close to 0:00 but I think it will stand. 4 points + 1 for lost challenge.

Teague loses 9-5.

That's a tough loss. I hope he takes away from this that he needs to defend the chest wrap - that's the only move the other kid had.

I could not believe in a short period of time he allows his opponent to put him in a front head lock over and over with the same results. He earned that loss. He should have just moved at the end but he didn't. Your right he should have won but when you keep putting yourself in a horrible position you get what you deserve. Lockett, Wolbert and Robideau wrestled great.
