Bear Bryant once said, “You have to have chicken in order to make chicken salad”. In other words, the best players usually win more games than those with less talent. Fortunately for us, Coach Gundy has been able to win many games with less talent than we deserve to win. The latest example was the win against Miami.
According to 247sports, we’re ranked 42nd in the nation in team talent. Yet, we consistently rank in the Top 25 in most years.
The cold hard truth is that of the 114 five star players in the country, 80 are on the rosters of 10 teams. Another 20 are on the rosters of ten more teams. The remaining 10 players on the next 30 teams. We have no 5 star players, and neither does 85 other teams. The top 10 teams have 445 4 star players, and the next ten teams have 370 4 star players. So, 815 4 star players are on the rosters of 20 different teams. The next 30 teams have 359 4 star players. The top 20 teams have an average of 41 4 star players per team. The next 30 average 10 4 star players. We have 7. Our coaching staff is doing a superior job with the talent we recruit.
We offer more than forty 4 star players every year, and average signing fewer than 3. The truth is that the top players in the country overwhelmingly sign to play at 20 schools. And, 75% of the 5 star players sign with 10 schools.
The chances of OSU hiring a coach to do a better job with the talent we recruit, is almost zero. And, unlike other coaches, Gundy has never got us on probation for violations, and we have maintained a Top 20 program for most of the past 15 years. That’s amazing!
