The Case For Second

Speaking of redshirting freshmen, I think we have not given our freshmen the experience we could give them. They can compete in 5 events and not lose eligibility. Merrill has wrestled in maybe 2 Opens but not in any duals. Sakamoto hasn't wrestled in anything. McComas has wrestled in a few Opens but no duals. Next year with our great 2025 class I hope they give them better experience options. Vega, Robideau, Lockett and Routledge should not just wrestle in a couple of Opens they should get all 5 events which would include duals.
Lots to do for a first year staff. I seriously doubt the focus was on exposing talent to the world.

Iowa line up and predictions
125 Cruz 1-2 or 2-2 he's draw dependent
133 Ayala places 1-3
141 Cullan hopefully qualifies
149 Parco places 2-4
157 Teemer places 1-4
165 Caliendo Finalist 2nd
174 Nelson places 4-6
184 Gabe places 6-8
197 Buchanan Finalist can win it
Hwt Kueter places 6-8

Would guess 3 finalists in Ayala Caliendo Buchanan. If Teemer shape is good he can also be a finalist. Parco needs Lovett on his side and Van Ness and Henson on the other to be a finalist
Nelson at 174 over Kennedy? that's a slap in the face to PK. I don't see iowa placing at 174 nor Kueter at heavy

Kueter beat Feldman. Do you've Feldman placing again? Nelson is listed in the probables for this weekend. Kennedy can't beat AA type guys.

How many matches has Brands wrestled this season? That seems like a total screw job on Kennedy. How does Brands even qualify for post season?
Didn't John Smith pull a similar move with Joe Smith.... Not exactly same circumstance, but ended up bumping another wrestler that had been at a lower weight most of the year?

Chandler Rogers disagrees.
Joe had a higher match count than Nelson does but Joe didn't wrestle until after the New Year. Chandler actually placed at NCAA twice at the weight and in consecutive years prior to being replaced. Joe didn't place that year he was R16 but Joe placed twice at 157 and took a RS the previous year. And if Nelson goes he will be replacing a guy who hasn't AA yet. And Nelson was 5th at 174 two years ago.

Yeah John absolutely hosed Chandler Rodgers out of a chance to AA only for Joe to go out and lay an absolute egg in the postseason because he was (allegedly) pulling too much beer weight and looked like crap.

Because of the match count, I think Joe drew Marinelli first round?

Chandler would’ve had a better route most likely.

I hate that we brought this up haha. Loved watching Chandler and hated when this happened. Loved watching Joe intermittently. Tale of two wrestlers with him haha
We all know that Joe beat Chandler in their ranking match but we also know that John has gone with wrestlers before that have lost ranking matches (I believe Johny Thompson and Johnny Hendricks fit that bill). We all loved to watch Chandler hook up his assassin but their is no guarantee that he would have done better than Joe although the odds are that he would have.

After saying all this, John really did nothing outside the common practices of a coach and in all honesty I cannot say that I wouldn't have chosen my son if I found myself in a similar situation.

This is why I hate that we brought it up, theres no right or wrong side it just sucks how it played out.

I remember the rumor at the time being that while Joe won the ranking match, they were not required to make and maintain weight before the wrestle off. It wasn’t talent that held Joe back, it was the amount of weight he cut and how he cut it.
Exactly a nice allowance was given. Those matches should all be scratch weight. We all know some can compete well 5 lbs over but on weight its totally different for some

LOL

Ranking match right before B12s because one guy didn’t want to make weight all year… garbo

His choice obviously but that was an exception I’ve never seen otherwise

That was kind of the beginning of the “wtf” decision making for me. That fiasco, plus a rash of injuries, plus moving multiple guys around the lineup throughout the season, capped off with the Ferrari nonsense

This season has been a lot more fun to follow lol
