I have been to Antarctica twice and Alaska three times, all thanks to the federal government. I was within a few feet of some Adelie penguins in their natural habitat! I was also temporarily stationed at USCG LORAN station Port Clarence two summers in a row. The "Coasties" that stayed there all year told me chilling stories of how polar bears would blend in to the heavy snow during the winter.
