I think it’s a phenomenal hire. He is a hard nosed, technical coach thats known for his ability to run a room, lead and develop

It is worth mentioning however that he is 42 years old and hasn’t consistently rolled with his guys everyday in quite awhile. I think we’ll see some help in that department.

This reminded me of my two favorite Oklahoma State All-Americans.

In 1936 Gordon DuPree went 0-2 to come in third. He had also wrestled in 1933 and 1934, coming in third both times.

But ol' Gordo was not an innovator. That title goes to Dell Shockley who in 1929, after receiving a bye all the way to the final, also went 0-2 to place third. Realizing he had achieve perfection, he rode off into the sunset, never to be heard from again.

Note to Know-Nothing:

I've been in contact with the people who are keeping up the Lehigh portion of WrestlingStats since Jay Hammond died trying to find all the data that he had on the OSU area of the site. I got and email from Kerry McCoy, no less, saying he didn't know who has it but he would check around but I haven't heard anything (months ago).

Do you have access to this info? Hammond seemed to have all of the won/lost/scoring data for every wrestler's matches. Before the site went down I downloaded Sheets, Monday and J.Smith data. That's all I have.

Here's the post

OK, here is a taste.

When you normalize the weights by era, 197 has had the most champions.

While 133 has had the most AA's, both in total and as a percentage (65.9%).

125, 184, and 197 are the only weights where fewer than half of all wrestlers have AA'd.

Thank you for compiling these numbers for us! Sincerely appreciated.

Did anyone see Mineo's post about the money behind the Iowa program?

I find that to be an odd stance on Slumlord's part. I don't recall any other large donor in any sport at any other school that isn't school first. If I'm the school admin, I'd be concerned about institutional control. I say that because if your highest priority as a donor isn't the school, then the rules the school must live by can become less important in the equation. Not saying that's happening but I'd be concerned. From the outside looking in it appears that Slumlord has too much control over the program.

Boone Pickens had some very real say so.

But let’s not rock the boat. It’s best for all involved not Iowa, for them to continue on current paths.

He who holds the purse strings

Boone was about the University, football and athletics not individual coaches or faculty. Pretty sure his first gift was academics.
I like you…but try again.

Gundy came with his gift. Then, he had a way to do things (collaboration) to achieve.

Yes, about the school, but within his vision.

Wow I'm struck by how many guys went from NQ to a top placement in the 90s.
There were a total of 85 guys who started their NCAA tournament career with a non-AA finish that later went on to AA. Of those, 25 made it all the way to the top, starting with Bobby Pearce in 1931 and ending with Chris Perry in 2014.

There were seven guys who came from even humbler beginnings, going from Did Not Qualify to All-American. And while none of these guys won a title, two of them did make a final.

Two of those should have been DNQ to 1st. In '83 Willingham was seeded #1 (might have been undefeated) and lost to unseed Thorn (ISU) and #2 seeded Foster was was up 5-1 against #4 Kilgore with a few seconds left in the 2nd and was pinned.

Even worse for Willingham is he lost to #8 seed Riley (Iowa) and didn't even place. He probably beat both Thorn and Riley every other time he wrestled them.

Also on these guys. Does anyone remember what happened to Jerry Kelly in '82. After finishing 2nd and 3rd, I know he was wrestling in '82 but for some reason didn't finish the season.

Not sure what you are saying. Boone was giving before Gundy, believe before Gundy was even on the team.

Yeah, he was giving Program changing amounts…

Gundy was forced on Miles and no search was conducted when Miles left. Gundy was a condition of the BIG donation as was some of the procedures put in place.

If you think, in any capacity that Boones involvement was as a gift giver only, I’ve got some really nice property that I’ll sell you!
