Actually you guessed wrong this time...I was talking about the article itself.
The video was nice and I generally could care less what Van Jones says but though he had some salient and very valid points (although he only had 2 changes when Newt ask him if he were president tomorrow what 4 things would he change). The problem still remains the family unit, which didn't get mentioned until the last maybe 4 or 5 minutes of the talk.
If we are all Americans ( like both Van and Newt said) then why the need for the hyphenated Irish-American, African-American etc? We should all call our selfs AMERICANS period! Leave the hyphenated shit for a marriage liscense.
Agree, I can't possibly imagine what life as a young black American could be like, so what next? Do we have two sets of laws? Two sets of standards? How can that be solved?
Four things I believe are brutally crucial to ending many of the divides we see today, and heck maybe you see the same or more.
One, the family unit has to be restored first and foremost. You can be poor, rich, stupid, white, black, or whatever but if you grow up without a structured environment that embraced mutual respect, some type of a moral compass and work ethic you are almost guaranteed DOA upon adolescence.
Two, the education system must be fixed. Don't care how but the first step I would take is abolish the unions. In conjunction with that, if parents can't or won't help/ensure their kids are taking advantage of the one thing that equalizes all other injustices (and is free) the child needs to be removed from that environment and the mom/dad whatever need to be induced to not have any more children until they grow up or decide to get fixed. History, for example, needs to be taught as it was in the context of the times, not as something that is a moving target. There needs to be a path to learn a trade (like Europe) instead of being forced to drag your ass to school everyday with no intention of learning because the boredom of study makes rigor set in.
Third, completely agree about the judicial system. Somebody smuggling/selling dope getting more time than a murderer is just completely out of whack with common sense. I don't use drugs but legalizing some of them would overnight remove an element of criminality that would put the true proven scumbags in jail where they belong and not allow for early releases of people who should never walk among free peoples again.
Forth, would be ending all the divisively named congressional groups and enacting term limits. Van Jones talked about kids watching adults fight then mimicking them...well same goes with the need to have a Hispanic Congressional caucus, Black Congressional Caucus and so on. How can anyone remotely paying attention to politics and being young not see the division that stands for.
Likewise, if I can't understand how growing up black is so hard and shouldn't have an opinion. Then quit telling me to not admire people like Robert E Lee or my ancestors from Europe. They could be my relations or hero's, and since you can't possibly relate to how I feel you don't deserve an opinion. Therefore an un-embellished version of how that can be related/studied/experienced needs to be presented or quit using it as a crutch for every ill in your life. By the way, had an uncle that years ago worked as a welfare agent in McCurtain County OK, and those excuses covered ever group of people. When he suddenly passed away I had the opportunity to listen to some of his cases he had recorded on cassettes....unbelievable is all I can say.
Don't think you can do anything about media bias, but the "perceived narrative" getting out before the facts is a giant problem. I agree with Van Jones about twitter.....the reality is people like the narrative they believe to be true. Seeing anything within that context before the facts come out and then hearing that the facts actually refute the original narrative (think hands up don't shoot) doesn't matter they believe what they want....true or not.
I was disappointed in both Newt and Van, for not calling out the people who unjustly stir the pot for their own personal gain and political longevity. This is also a huge problem.
Lastly, start over with any of the previously practiced federal government's failed policies. I'm for block grants to cities or states but whatever makes sense (not politically expedient) needs to be implemented.
I can't do a thing about past injustices, so quit trying to hold my thinking and color, hostage to things that happen 200, 100, or even 25 years ago.
