The Pokes travel from Orem, Utah on Friday to Corvallis, Oregon on Sunday to bury the 25th ranked Beavers at 4 pm (CST) on Flo. The Cowboys are 6-0 against hippie OSU, including a 27-9 win last year. Of course, this year's version of the Pokes is quite a bit different, with at least 5 new starters expected to go. New Head Coach David Taylor is keeping it close to the proverbial vest and wouldn't commit to any specific lineup for the weekend and a couple of weights are up in the air. Oregon State is, of course, coached by beloved Cowboy, two-time national champion Chris Pendleton. OSU (tree version) is 1-1 in duals on the year beating North Dakota State 35-6 and losing to Iowa 30-7. Rankings are (Intermat/Flo) and expected starters and records via wrestlestat.

125: (6/6) Troy Spratley (0-0) v. (24/10) Maximo Renteria (2-0). Renteria is only 11-19 for his career, but did keep it close last year against eventual National Champ and #1 ranked Richard Figuroa (ASU), only losing 9-5. He also beat Joey Cruz (Iowa) 7-3 a couple of weeks ago. Spratley lost his match against a different OSU 125 (Brandon Kaylor) last year, but this isnt the same guy. Spratley by a major at the end (4-0).

133: (33/33) Cael Hughes (4-0) or Reece Witcraft (0-0) v. Damien Elliott (0-2). Elliott was teched by Drake Ayala (Iowa) and lost 10-7 to Kyle Burwick of N. Dakota State, so this will be an easy out for either guy. Lets call this one a major, but if Hughes goes, it will be a TF. (8-0) Note: Gabe Whisenhunt is ranked 30 by Flo but hasn't wrestled this year.

141: (14/12) Tagen Jamison (4-0) v. Nash Singleton (1-1). Singleton is 18-17 for his career but hasn't beat anyone very good. He dropped from 149 last year when we lost to Sammy Alvarez in OT. He faced Block Ryder in the Iowa dual and only lost 5-4, but no one is really sure how good Ryder is going to be. Tagen lost in this dual last year to Christian Belton, but again, not the same guy. Major decision. (12-0)

149: (18/21) Carter Young (0-0) v. Victor Jacinto (0-2). Jacinto continues his brutal start to the year after facing two ranked guys: (4/4) Kyle Parco (Iowa) keeping it fairly close 5-1 and (32/28) Gavin Drexler (NDSU) ad losing 9-2. It doesnt get any easier and he loses by a major. (16-0).

157: (8/12) Teague Travis (0-0) v. (30/30) Ethan Stiles (2-0). RS Freshman Stiles transferred from Nebraska. Stiles won a lot of matches against inferior opponents in open tournaments last year, but he's got some talent. He majored Caleb Rathjen (Iowa) 12-3 and last year only lost 7-2 to top 5 guy Jacori Teemer (ASU). This one comes down to the 3rd period but Travis pulls it out. (19-0)

165: (5/6) Cam Amine (0-0) v. Kekana Fouret (1-1). Fouret pinned Brendan Howes (NDSU) in their last dual, but got teched by the similar to Amine, (2/2) Michael Caliendo (Iowa). He's a senior and has zero good wins over the last couple of years and lost to Izaak Olajnik 10-1 last year. I'd be shocked if Amine doesn't tech or pin him. (24-0)

174: (5/4) Dean Hamiti (0-0) v. (33/32) Sean Harmon (1-1). Harmon is a Senior with a 45-21 record, but anytime he faces elite competition, he usually gets smoked. He did keep it close (2-1) against (10/9) Nelson Brands (Iowa) but this one won't be. Major. (28-0)

184: (3/3) Dustin Plott (0-0) v. TJ McDonnell (1-1). This guy stinks. Sorry. He's a redshirt freshman who is 5-10 in his career and got teched by (8/6) Gabe Arnold (Iowa). TF if not a pin. (33-0)

197: (19/20) Luke Surber (0-0) v. (7/5) Trey Munoz (1-1). Finally a match worth watching. Munoz is a 4 time NCAA Qualifier and 3X All American (at 184) finishing 3rd last year. Son of Cowboy Great Mark Munoz, moving up to his dad's weight for his last year. Lost 9-5 against transfer king, bag chaser and top ranked (2/1) Stephen Buchanan (Iowa) this year. Will be a TOUGH early season test for Surber. Might be a homer pick, but between Munoz moving up and Surber having something to prove, I think Surber pulls it out in the 3d. (36-0)

HWT: (2/2) Wyatt Hendrickson (0-0) v. Brett Mower (1-1). Mower was pinned 5X last year and Hendrickson does Hendrickson things and pins this guy in the 2nd period. (42-0)

From your mouth to God’s ears.

I could see there maybe being an upset in another weight. 125? Who knows how good some of these little guys are. 157?
If Troy loses to Maximo, then 125 is an issue for OSU. No way should Troy lose imo. 157 I agree that this weight could be an upset special but I also favor Teague.

I expect to see the OSU guys overall being more sound technically and more open to funky positions. Wrestling strong third periods due to better nutritional techniques. May be some early season fits and starts but by season's end, I think you'll be pleased that most guys are in every match.

I mean I agree with you, I was just posting the two weights I thought had the best chance at an upset based on past performance.

Will this be on YouTube by chance? I thought the video quality at Utah Valley was great and that campus looks beautiful.

UV appears to have better streaming on YouTube than OSU does on their platform.

I’ve got a weird situation with Flo for some reason.
I can still stream on my phone but my laptop has kicked me off and when I try to login it goes straight to new subscription page. I honestly don’t know if my sub is up but if it is then why does it still stream on my phone? Looks like I’ll be watching on the “small screen”

Just X out of that . It's just an ad

Spratley/Renteria

1: not just going until 30 seconds left. Penalty point against Spratley for illegal move 0-1. Idk his deal withmoanelties this year.

2: Spratley down. Couple good mat returns. Out just shy of a minute RT 1-1 Spratley gets a TD. 4-1. Challenge for locked hands. Another penalty point! 4-2. Renteria gets out before buzzer. 4-3

3: Renteria out quick. 4-4. Not much for rest of period. OT. That was not a good period

OT: Renteria puts Spratleynin a bad position but gets out. Sprately gets the TD. 7-4. Didn’t love this for Troy

3-0 Pokes

133: Hughes/Elliott

1: Elliott on a single but fought off. Another shot but Hughes fights off then gets a TD of his own 3-0. Rides him out. RT over a minute

2: Hughes down. Out after 20. 4-0. Good scramble that Hughes is able to convert out of a not great position. 7-0. Elliott out with a few seconds left. 7-1.

3: Elliott down. RT well over 1. Would like to see bonus. Cuts him after a bit 7-2. Elliott has a leg, but Hughes with heavy hips. Then a crotch lock . Then a whizzer. Then almost his own takedown on the edge. Then time expires. 8-2

Woulda really like bonus there. Elliott was the most aggressive wrestler, Carl was just much more talented

6-0 Pokes

141: Jamison/Singleton

1: Hard ties and head slaps. Nice single from Jamison, almost gets a standing cradle but finishes. 3-0. Cuts him. 3-1.

2: Jamison down. Good mat return from Singleton. Gets out. 4-1. Jamison gets a weird high crotch/single, then thrown him down hard. 7-1, quick escape. 7-2.

3: Singleton down. Jamison putting on a ride. Out after 30. 7-3. Singleton deep on a leg but Tagen converts. 10-3. RT over 1. Tagen rides him out for the Major. 11-3

Woulda preferred a cut and another TD at the end, instead of ride out but glad he made it.

10-0 Pokes

149: Young/Garver

1: Young gets a quick TD. 3-0. Cuts him pretty quick. 3-1. Young pushes the action. Garvee just trying to stay away. Single leg and finish by Young. 6-1. Cuts him after a bit. 6-2 Has about 30 to get another TD. Doesn’t get it.

2: Garver down. Young almost has a quick tilt. Restart-cuts him. 6-3. Young deep on a single but can’t finish before stalemate. Young gets a TD on a go behind. 9-3. Rides him out. Well over a minute RT.

3: Young down. Up quick. Out after 25. 10-3. Young has a leg but Garver rolls and grabs a leg. Young works his way out and gets the TD. 13-3. RT locked. Garver gets out. 13-4. 14-4 with RT.

I was told we were going to be pushing the pace this year. Not so far for the little guys.

14-0 Pokes.

157: Travis v Stiles

1: Travis gets first leg but PD called and back to center. Stiles in deep. Travis fights hard but gives up the TD. 0-3. Challenge by pokes on an illegal move. Lost challenge. Weird spot for a challenge stiles rides him out.

2: Stiles down. Travis cuts quick. 0-4. Travis on a leg. Stiles rolls through but Travis able to convert. 3-4. Rides him out.

3: Travis down. Gets a leg in. Cuts him on a restart. 4-4. 1:30 left. Travis pretty active. Gets a leg with 30 seconds . Stiles defends well and time expires. SV time.

OT: Travis in deep. Stiles able to grab an ankle. Good scramble but Stiles gets saved by a PD call. Which is BS honestly because he out himself in the position. Another deep single by Travis. Another ankle grab. This time Stiles able to maneuver for the TD. 4-7 loss.

That’s why you don’t let them hang around folks.

14-3
