more than Miley Cyrus. I get home last night an turn on the TV, I guess I'd been watching something on Comedy Central before I left the house that morning, and when it fires up there is Miley Cyrus on the VMA awards. I watched for all of about 2 minutes (I think Taylor Swift won some award) but it was enough for me to get to watch Miley try some skit about having a sleepover at her house and then it comes back to her wearing some plastic outfit.

I simply don't get her or what she's trying to prove most of the time. When I look at her all I see is a skank that would only be hot if you were drunk or high. I know why the asked her to host because she's bound to do something that would get them extra headlines but man that woman just makes me want to get an STD test every time I see her on TV.

A thousand times yes!! I was about half-asleep the other night and flipped over to Paladia for the first time in a while.

I look up, and she's doing this slow stripper walk with 10-12-inch heels which thrust her hips too far forward to walk. She's naked with her bits pixilated. She's got about an 8-inch giraffe tongue bouncing up and down like an old-man's scrotum.

I have never been insulted or offended by porn, but man, that was the most disgusting thing I ever saw. I just don't get it.

At one of her shows she did some skit where she burned a bible then told the audience that it was for all the Christians there. Nothing like a dip shit getting mad about being told how to act then turns around and does the same thing. Drugs have a hold of that girl bad IMO that plus an over reaction to show people she isn't Hannah Montana. She used to be hot back in the day but now I wouldn't touch her with syssy's peter.

Vito,

The story about her burning the Bible at her concert is 100% false. It started on a satirical "news" site (similar to the Onion) and was picked up by someone on Facebook as being truthful and it got blasted across the net. But, it was not true according to Snopes and numerous other sources.

Not to say that the girl isn't likely a walking STD, but on the other hand - I've known of a few instances where the "performance" put on by an "artist" is completely a stage persona, a PR creation and where the reality of their lives is quite a bit tamer.

People my age remember full well the claims being made about Alice Cooper, KISS, etc. back in the day. Stuff so over the top outrageous to be unfathomable, yet passed along as if they were gospel. Probably made a lot of people do a double take when they found out that Alice Cooper was an avid golfer, a Republican and a born-again Christian. Which is kind of ironic, given that it was that very demographic who hated him so much, they wouldn't hesitate to make up the worst of the worst kind of slanderous rumors about him.

Oh I just heard it from the wife, she came home one day telling me I wasn't allowed to download any of her songs. Which wasn't a difficult task. Good to know she hasn't went off the deep end totally.

She definitely has found her niche and is working it hard. However I'm not sure anyone truly ever aspires to be the class slut but someone has to do it.

Generations should definitely be judged by the VMAs.

She's so transparently desperate to be seen and talked about that it is tragically comic to watch. Lately after doing some googling on the most shocking (but legal) thing she can sexually identify as, she came up with "pansexual."

I'm just so. very. shocked...

She's definitely pushing the envelope on the slut bit.

Besides her turn to the dark side, how different is her whole schtick than what Madonna was doing in the late 80s to mid 90s? It think it's more shocking because everyone views her through Hannah Montana glasses and its looked down upon because that generation of young girls could be influenced as they grew up with her as Hannah and now are being shown Miley.

I think she sucks ass either way, but I can see why some folks would hate her.

Hell, how is she much different than Screaming Jay Hawkins, Little Richard, the aforementioned Alice Cooper and KISS, Madonna, Lady Gaga, GWAR, Marilyn Manson, or GG Allin when it comes to doing something "shocking" for the PR benefits or to set themselves apart from the pack? (Heck, you could even throw Liberace's name in there for good measure.)

Hype = success in many respects (not always but in general). If you get enough pub for a long enough time, even the most talentless out there can typically realize some sort of success. Let's not forget that Tila Tequila (aka Poorly tattooed Asian Myspace Slut-Dwarf) reportedly cleared about $2 Million when she sold her first "single" exclusively through Myspace by the mere fact she had built up a huge following by posting what amounted to "porn" pics of herself for a few years leading up to the moment.

I think that's all this is - an adolescent attempt to follow the Madonna recipe. However, she has far less talent than Madonna. And isn't as hot as Madonna was in her prime.

I don't mean this as a defense of Miley. But if I had to choose between her and Kanye -- she wins by a mile. Granted the choice is between two ego-centric idiots, but at least Miley seems to be in on the joke.

That's a hard choice cableok, it's like trying to pick between Switzer or Tubbs as to which sooner coach I hated the most in my youth.

The way I look at it, Kanye could walk into my office right now and leave and everything would be cool. Miley could walk in and leave and I'd probably call a professional cleaning company to scrub my office.

Alice Cooper's conversion was years after his peak as a performer. He has kind of an interesting story as both he and his wife are children of fundamentalist preachers.

But Hollywood's right, much of what people see is an act (not that I condone it and yes Miley Cirus' act repulses me).

Here's a little known tidbit that might freak more than a few people out: Roy Orbison was a Baptist deacon for years at his church in Nashville and Bob Marley converted to Evangelical Christianity before his death.

Marley did "convert" if you will, but not to evangelical Christianity. He actually converted to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, the same Sect to which Haile Selassie belonged and to which he had pledged his allegiance as "Defender of the Faith" during his rein as Emperor of Ethiopia.

I had read about that, back during the day (in the 80's shortly after he died.)

I found it interesting and it stood out in my mind, because I had read some history on the early church during a religion course I took at OSU and found it surprising that the Ethiopian Orthodox was one of the earliest church's founded. I had also, at that time, recently read a biography of Haile Selassie who to say the least was a very "interesting" character. And since Selassie considered himself to be the head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, I wasn't too surprised that Marley decided to join up himself.

Rastafarians seemed to take some from column A, some from column b & c, mixed it with a little cult of personality surrounding Selassie and came up with their "religion." Not unlike some of the other "island" religions of the carribbean which seem to be a mix of Christianity and pagan religions put in a blender and poured out in a form unrecognizable in many respects to either religion.

The difference is that having a marketing gimmick doesn't turn you into a 4 decade career and HOF member by itself. KISS and Alice have some shock value in common I suppose, but they used it to create a rock m roll mystique which at the time was scary more than hyper sexual. And they played their own music like bands should.

Of the solo artists you mentioned, Littke Richard and Gaga both are very talented musicians.

Madonna is the only apt comparison - being a sexually branded singer/dancer/entertainer who pushed the edge of good taste. She at least was first and did it better.

Miley tries too hard and comes across as a skinny, obnoxious cliche with stolen acts. We never would've heard of her if her dad wasn't the achey breaky heart guy. Everyone else you listed is self made and unique.

I concede your point that shocking marketing has been around for a long time but she just seems like sad 5th generation photocopy of some 80's girl trying to be Madona.

I was wrong about Miley Cyrus, she came out as "pansexual." All this time I thought she was white trash.

I've never understood the appeal. The tongue, the trashyness, she weighs like 72 pounds... ew. But she has hits and tits and that is precious currency in the pop scene.

syskatine,

I don't get it either, but I don't think I'm going to be going out on the weakest limb here, when I suggest that there's probably a good portion of her "fans" who have some kind of Hannah Montana "fetish" that they've harbored long before she was "legal."

Mega,

Yes, there is indeed "talent" present in the groups/people I mentioned. And yes, you probably don't build a 40 yr career on just being "shocking." But my point was more related to the fact that most of these acts did so at the beginning of their careers, just to break the barrier to even get noticed or garner a record deal.

There's a video of a then completely unknown by the name of Bryan Warner, who was in the MTV studios in NYC during one of their old "rock" video shows, who managed to be the 30 second interview of a random audience member. He tells of being in NYC putting together a band and getting publicity for the project. Next thing you know, Marilyn Manson hit the big time with their combo of odd dress, adopting the given names of female movie stars and combining them with surnames of serial killers and engaging in over-the-top stage antics.

He knew exactly what he was doing and achieved his goal at a time when I dare say that there were likely 30-40 more talented bands playing the same venues Manson started in, which never came close to sniffing the big time. So, talent may sustain, but it's not nearly enough in many instances to get noticed to the point it leads to your big break. Creating a gimmick however, can at least break down that first door. And some times it can sustain a career much longer than you would think, - Monkey's concerts still sell out.
