For those that missed the exhibition match between Andrew Marsden and Scott Marmoll (3-4 before tonight), Andrew was far from dominant. He scored a 6 point move in the first period, Marmoll scored a 6 point move in the second (may have been third) before they went to sudden victory tied 7-7. Andrew was able to get the pin in SV, so that is a plus. Andrew is exciting, but inconsistent. Weigel is consistent, but I'd rather watch paint dry. I agree that neither is a significant factor at NCAAs, but I'd prefer to see Marsden due to his bonus point potential. Of course, one of them hast to qualify first.
In the other matches, Collica definitely made a statement tonight and hopefully he can be competitive on Sunday. Moving into the top 8 would be great for seeding purposes. Dean Heil has been living on the edge and tonight it caught up to him. He seems to be a real student of the game and I think this helps him in the long run. Alex seems to be struggling a bit, if you can call it that. People have learned to stay away from his underhooks, so he is having to resort to other strategies to score his takedowns and he just doesn't seem real comfortable with that. Chandler made a statement as well. Quite frankly, I didn't think he could stay with Ramos physically, but he proved me wrong. He looks undersized for the weight, so we will see what happens next year.
I like where this team is at right now (except for the injuries to Brock, Smith and Crutchmer) and I expect at least 6 Big 12 champs, with 8 being a very real possibility.
