Next Years Lineup

Young has always had the potential to be an AA. I feel like after his first year at OK State, that he never got any better though. That was a recurring theme at OK State though. With the new coaching staff, that is a thing of the past. If Hughes can make it down to 133, I would say he has the better chance to AA though. That is just my opinion though. Hughes can be great.
Tbf to Carter he was wrestling a lot better his sophomore year until he got injured at Big 12s.

I saw a rumor that Hughes wrestled off at 141 and won his match. Any truth to that? Could explain why Jamison got sent to Michigan

I talked to Surber a few days ago. He's excited, kept a lot of things close to the vest. Said we are really going to enjoy the fan experience.

No real breaking news - expecting to see a line-up close to this for the opener:

125: Spratley
133: Witcraft
141: Jamison or Hughes
149: Jamison or Young
157: Travis
165: Amine
174: Hamiti
184: Plott
197: Merrill or Surber
285: Captain America
Pretty close to dead on 😊

At least he is trying to score and trying multiple times. Progress!
I think the scoring mindset is from birth. Some people have it and some people don’t. I’ve seen that often a traditional “non-scorer”, who changes his MO and starts scoring, will revert back to his old ways in stressful situations. Obviously, there are outliers. We’ll see how Thompson fairs against higher quality competition next year.

His finals match he looked exactly the same to me as last year, against much lesser competition too. A year left though before we need to make any assessments I guess,
I watched all four matches in Kansas. Aggressive his 1st 2 matches but probably weak opponents. In the semi's and finals he seemed not to have an ounce of motivation to wrestle. He showed nothing in these matches, he won both matches but it was painful to watch. His finals opponent wanted to fight him at the end, obviously he did not intimidate his opponent.

I highly doubt we get 3 more years of Thompson as we will likely have better options ahead. He has done nothing to get anyone excited about his future since bing in Stillwater.

He was a big time recruit who had no business seeing the mat. He desperately needed a RS last year. I have no idea if he’ll ever contribute but one season is way to quick to write off anyone.

I get not being blown away because he didn’t bonus his way through the tournament, but I also definitely don’t wanna write a kid off who could very well be doing a LOT of growing up and figuring things behind the scenes during a redshirt year. DT clearly sees a lot of potential in the kid if he picked him as his World Championships training partner. Let’s give him some time to continue to learn and mature before we make any professions about his future with the program.

@Okie_Pat has a point though. That type of wrestler doesn't change. Not in a year, and really not ever. Certainly not as a 2nd/3rd year wrestler.

Look at a guy like Beau Bartlett. You would think in that program he'd be a guy willing to pull the trigger a lot more. But that's just not who he is. Thompson isn't going to turn into some volume shooter just because his head coach was. His path to staying in the lineup will come down to how much he wins with the style he is now.

Which... unfortunately, is really freaking hard to do. But the kid has grown up winning, so he's used to doing that. And he's being coached in a completely different way now, so he's definitely going to get better. But a scoring machine he ain't ever gonna be.

I want Thompson to be everything we hoped he would be and more when we recruited him. Maybe he will jump levels this RS season idk. I am not writing him off by any means, but just looking at the guys we having been recruiting under DT that are all high volume scorers. He is a defensive wrestler and DT's approach to wrestling is the opposite of that. I just wonder if he would of been a guy DT would of recruited personally. I cant say for certain, but my thought is that he went with DT to worlds bc he was the only guy around his weight that wasn't a true freshmen or starting. DT mentioned wanting to take Plott, but didn't think it was fair to him to take him away from practice right before the season. DT may very well see something in Thompson and if that is the case then I hope he can get him to unleash a beast.

I know this board really loves sleeping on Kody Routledge but the kid had one hell of an Ironman. He easily majored (almost pinned) Will Denny in the finals to win it… the same Will Denny who just beat Melvin Miller in the semis and Kollin Rath in the finals to win Super 32.

Kody is a stud and he seems to be getting better by the minute.

Well, he will either commit to the process or he won’t make it, especially with the roster restrictions coming.
