Next Years Lineup

I wonder if Reece can jump levels this year. 33 will be a pivotal weight for us this year. If Hughes goes 41, that will throw a monkey wrench into everything.
It seems like whether it’s a real thing or not… Cael “can’t” get down. DT will move on and Cael will be the odd man out imo. That’s just my guess.

Does anyone know for sure that Mccomas and witcraft wrestled off already? Glad surber won hopefully he can stay healthy and show the country what he’s all about.

So getting pinned TWICE at the Big 12's and going 0-2 at Nationals at the same weight he's slotted for isn't dreadful. I've seen some great, some good, and some piss poor matches out of him. I want him to succeed but the last few years haven't shown it.

So, what weight is he suited for? 184?

197
Luke Surber (13-7) placed 6th and scored 7.5 team points.

Champ. Round 1 - Spencer Mooberry (North Dakota State) 9-13 won by fall over Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 13-7 (Fall 0:49)
Cons. Round 1 - Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 13-7 received a bye () (Bye)
Cons. Round 2 - Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 13-7 won by decision over Julien Broderson (Iowa State) 8-9 (Dec 8-2)
Cons. Round 3 - Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 13-7 won in sudden victory - 1 over Evan Bockman (Utah Valley) 18-7 (SV-1 4-1)
Cons. Semi - Stephen Buchanan (Oklahoma) 21-2 won by decision over Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 13-7 (Dec 6-2)
5th Place Match - Wyatt Voelker (Northern Iowa) 17-6 won by fall over Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 13-7 (Fall 6:32)

197
Luke Surber (12-9) place is unknown and scored 0.0 team points.

Champ. Round 1 - Lou Deprez (Binghamton) 25-4 won by decision over Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 12-9 (Dec 6-0)
Cons. Round 1 - Jaxon Smith (Maryland) 18-7 won by decision over Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 12-9 (Dec 4-2)
He was injured man.

Healthy, he does a pretty dang good job. He had some trouble at heavy, but what 230 pound heavy doesn't?

His move down to 197 (ideal weight) had some growing pains but was still okay. Then he was injured. Big picture, healthy, he has an decent shot to podium.

I would post all results if I knew them. JJ has potential but needs to get a lot stronger.

Cael can make 33. He’s just not and that’s all I’ll say. Come December he will need to go 33 and win the spot if he wants to start. NO guarantees he does.

Tagen will be the 41 after November. Nobody around the weight can beat him.

Well. That is probably not what you want to read about a prized recruit. Do we need to put Hughes on Knucklehead Watch™️?

So a kid that doesn't weigh what you want him to, and who has every incentive to weigh, must be a failure?

Gonna say something super controversial: maybe his body has outgrown that weight and his best efforts are unable to get him there.

There have been rumblings about Hughes and the 133 slot for a while now. And he won U20 in April at 61 kg which is 134.4 lbs. So what's the deal? DT wants competition at 141? Season long 133 is not in the cards but post-season focus is?

™️ lol

No it’s the implication (at least how I read it) that he COULD be making the weight but he ISN’T. If DT is sticking to the PSU method of weight management that our friends from up north have described, they wouldn’t be asking him to make a weight he can’t maintain.

If he’s outgrown the weight then so be it. Don’t kill yourself trying to make a weight you can’t maintain healthily, because then you end up with the March results we’ve gotten the last 5-6 years. That said, if he isn’t making weight because he’s not taking it seriously then it’s a whole other issue.

I’m not trying to crap on kids for the sake of it. There could very well be descent plans in place to get guys at their “optimal weight” for postseason and if that’s the case then great. I don’t want these kids cutting so much weight or cutting weight ineffectively that it’s a detriment to their health (including partying in the middle of the season). That’s how you end up with a kid like Mastro deciding to walk away with the sport, or Joe Smith never quite reaching where he could have in the latter part of his career.

That said, there’s clearly been a culture and lifestyle shift going from John Smith to David Taylor. We were shocked when there was only 1 defection after the hire was announced. There’s still a chance that guys who don’t jive with the current culture will be here for this season and decide to test the portal come April.

yes..Reese beat mccomas...it is close and mccomas has tons of potential. my opinion is that this ranking will occur throughout the season. yet to be seen if they will ask Cael to get to 133 for a few matches and post season

Asking for a friend. What were the full results of ranking matches?

It's a cut for Cael. It's a cut for Tagen. DT isn't taking the "let them live" approach regarding those 2 right now. He simply believes if they do it right, they can make the weight.

DT isn't Carl, and Okiest isn't PSU. If you want to move up, you're going to have to earn it. Until then, what the coaches say goes.

Not sure Jamison needs to earn the spot when he can probably beat everyone in the room from 141-157. So he should have the right to wrestle at 149 if that's where he is at his best. And if I had to choose I would rather have Hughes at 141 than Carter Young at 149 in the lineup. Instead we will have 2 guys in Jamison and Hughes who could be podium guys having big cuts just to make room for Young who IMO is R12 at best. Hope I'm wrong with Young.

That's a damn good point. Young getting a lot of benefit of the doubt in this process. Maybe he's gonna blow us away and we just don't know it yet.

Really gonna be interesting to see how Carter looks. Lee had an interview with him where it sounded like the year to redshirt and heal up did wonders for mentally. Also, remember his crazy run at either WTTs or one of those other tournaments came when he had Kennedy in his corner. Not saying he’s about to be a national title contender, but if he’s got his head back on right and coaches who seem to know how to get the best out of him, he may have as much upside as anyone on this roster.

Imo Carter will do great at 49. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, he’s made huge strides in his game and is A LOT stronger and he’s gotten pretty funky. He was beating JW when he left the team. Last time I posted that I got some laugh emojis but it doesn’t change the facts. Sorry boutcha. JW was looking at trying to make 41 and hoping Tagen and Carter battled it out for 49.

And from what I understand the cut is going well for Tagen and Cael but yes it’s tough. Tagen will be 41 in some other tourneys this month. Come December he will take his place as the starter unless the coaches change things.

Pulling weight sucks and I don’t blame Cael for not wanting to get to 33 but from what I hear he CAN make it. If he can’t then we’ll see what happens. Everyone talking about their preferences for who goes where and I get it. No worries. But we will see these guys in action very soon and CKLV will tell all.

All I’ll say is that the coaches didn’t come in with predetermined thoughts on who was going 33-49. The decisions being made are off of what they are seeing in the room. Us sitting around picking spots based on what we saw two years ago has no bearing

Nice post

I agree that Jamison will be in the lineup either at 141 or 149 but it appears that maybe the coaches want him at 141. If that is correct then that seems to imply that they would rather have Young in the lineup than Hughes. Otherwise they would move Jamison to 149 and let Hughes wrestle 141. This could be incorrect thinking on my part. I would never criticise a wrestler for not being able to make a weight so I leave that out of my hopes for the lineup. If I had to choose which to be in the lineup I have always thought Young has better potential to AA than Hughes.

Young has always had the potential to be an AA. I feel like after his first year at OK State, that he never got any better though. That was a recurring theme at OK State though. With the new coaching staff, that is a thing of the past. If Hughes can make it down to 133, I would say he has the better chance to AA though. That is just my opinion though. Hughes can be great.
