RECRUITING UPDATE New portal commit + visitors info

He was on the field during 7 games, but only 4 of those were at OL in a traditional sense & PFF only has him playing 36 OL snaps (21 a LT & 15 at RT).

The other 3 games were only on special teams as a member of the line for the FG unit (total of 21 snaps over the season).
Those stats are no surprise for me and I figured his snap count was low, for any RS Frosh OL to even see the field shows to me they saw a little promise in him. I don't expect him to start, possibly not even be a backup. I think part of the reason for all these transfers is for competition for every position on the depth chart, including backups. The 2 deep on our team was just horrible last year in general.

I said during last year as the losses piled up, in hindsight it was a warning sign some of our OL took their time to make a decision to return. Should have sent them packing the second they said, I need to think it over.

In the end, I believe they mostly came back because they could make more playing than what their first job would pay, their OL coach was over loyal to them and they did not have to worry about competition, they put off adulthood on a fun college campus for anther year, and they were happy just making the title game the previous year and being a favorite for the upcoming season.

We need to make it hard to make the 2 deep. Any player not capable or does not project to the 2 deep should be cut at the first opportunity.

Probably most of the time but not always. That generation really no telling what they’re thinking to be honest.

Yah, but the safe assumption is its money. People coming up with 10 reasons why a guy could be in the portal and money didn't cross their mind? Don't get it.

He has some promise. He was projected to go to Wisconsin, and he played in 7 games as a RS Frosh.
The kid is a good athlete. Was a TE and played defense. Northwestern was the school really after him.......I guess Wisconsin came later. Nebraska did not want to lose him and he is a very smart kid.........but Northwestern did some monkey biz. An old friend sent him our way.

Haha...didn't out-bid them, or even match. Old school recruiting still has a place.

A few. The previous staff did not due much……kinda left it up to Kenyatta and his team. Current staff is all over the place. One thing they are doing is getting out and seeing all the high school coaches. When a kid is thinking about entering the portal the HS coach is one of the first people they call.

Scouting report on Patterson from 24/7 Sports, before his senior season…

A hard-hitting defender that has played mostly safety on Friday nights, but could eventually grow into a three-down linebacker. Made a name for himself as a youngster in the local parks for the Miami Garden Ravens before getting varsity snaps as a freshman at TRU Prep and then winning a pair of state titles as a sophomore and junior at Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna Prep. At his best when he’s asked to come downhill and make stops near the line of scrimmage as he’s a natural body striker that is quick to sift through traffic and meet the football. Has gotten more and more comfortable in both man and zone coverage over the years and has shown on the 7-on-7 circuit that he can hang with most large wide receivers and tight ends. Has assembled some of the best special teams highlights we have seen in recent years as he has blocked multiple punts and kicks at the prep level and flies down the field like a heat-seeking missile in both punt and kick coverage. Limited testing data makes it hard to paint the full picture, but should be viewed as a versatile back-seven defender with tweener measurables that could do a variety of different things and serve as a potential chess piece for a defensive coordinator. NFL upside in an era where so many teams want to spread it out.

Does this make 3 now that have transferred in and out in less than a semester?
Only the second one that I can think of. He had left us and jumped back in the portal a while ago, so this isn’t a new one.
Based on his other offers, I’m guessing he was worried about PT here or possibly encouraged to hit the portal.

From another article about his commitment to UNC:
“Last Wednesday, Owens officially visited UNC. He also took an official to New Mexico. He had his sights on an OV to Missouri State, but he canceled that trip when he committed to the Tar Heels.”

I get the feeling that the new staff is using the early portal to vet and process players with the knowledge that they can still go get a replacement in the late portal. It sounds cut throat, but the players are doing it so the coaches might as well too

Don’t blame them a bit. It’s the other side of the double edged sword.

It seems like another piece of evidence that a rational system with commitment in both directions would benefit everyone.

So if Bill wanted this guy. Are we that deep at TE or did the kid wamt
more money?

Is there an inside story to this?

And with no money involved. IMO, until that happens (and I’m fully aware that isn’t going to happen) it’s a farce.

RA says there are four, but doesn't list them. I know there's the DT from Temple that didn't even make it to Spring and Owens, plus a JUCO DB (Chase Pinkston). It wouldn't surprise me if the last one was an OL since we took three in the Spring portal.

Yeah it’s weird he never mentions them all.

We’re officially in the summer football doldrums now.

They really like Ford because of his toughness even though he has a few issues as a receiver....route running and so on. They love the North Texas TE. Great skill set. Then we got the kid from BYU. Thinking this kid saw the writing on the wall

I sort of assumed we got the Utah State TE (Monney) to be the receiving threat and Hammond (North Texas) to be more of a blocker/utility guy. Glad to hear they feel good about this crop of tight ends. Will be interesting to see the personnel groupings and rotations.
