NCAA PORTAL

I think the finals were more focused on the individual matchups without the team race involved. To me, that was a net positive. Wrestling should evolve into promoting individual contests instead of the team aspect. Like other martial sports. Because of that, the finals were up 70% in the ratings. That's a hint to me.

On some level, Cael doesn't give a crap about duals, conference participation, or anything else other than as a preparation for nationals. He doesn't even hide it. If DT is going to catch him, you'll be doing the same. You know that in your mind even if your heart wants otherwise.

The dark times ahead are due to NIL and the overall collegiate landscape. If we change our attitudes from team race into 10 individual gladiator competitions, the sport can thrive in the marketplace.
If you want to kill college wrestling then get rid of the team aspect. If you turn it into an individual sport only then you can kiss about 90% of your fan base goodbye. Getting rid of the team aspect is a horrible idea.

I don’t understand the worry with swiderski…he wrestles hard… loves wrestling. If he buys in and lives life right will be a great addition. Also we have so many studs coming in…quit worrying about transfer portal..let’s watch our young studs get some matches and learn to be dominant in a year or 2…build from the ground up after the showing this year.
That’s a good point. Next year will be a good year for cowboy nation

Considering we are around 40 with the incoming freshmen, your feeling should be right. I wonder if we see any grey shirts from them. Either way, a lot of fat needs to be trimmed. Idk how they’re gonna do it.
I think you try to have 2 guys at each weight along with 7-8 incoming recruits and a couple of portal spots. From an outsider looking at the roster there are some easy decisions, but understandably nothing is easy about cutting a kid.

Swiderski may not be able to beat TJ, however TJ has shown the ability to beat himself. Maybe one more year will change something, he did go from zero to 5.5 point at Nationals (this year so next year if he makes the next jump he will be an AA. Talent is there.

The lasting impression I have of Swiderski is Jordan beating him in the Big 12. If someone would have told me two years ago that I'd be pulling for Swiderski and actively rooting against Jordan I wouldn't have believed them.

Beyond TS at 125, I have no real confidence right now in anyone in our projected line up next year will be AA. Doesn't mean I don't have a tremendous amount of hope with guys like Merrill, Dee, or Facundo but really no one other than TS and now Swiderski have ever done anything in the post season. Really curious as to where TT ends up, I thought beyond the finalist he wrestled the most consistently in the post season as anyone.

Doesn't mean I think we are going to be bad next year, just that there's a ton of uncertainty in our lineup. Had a couple of hammers transfer in last year, now it's time to develop a few (unless there's some transfer out there I'm forgetting about).

Agreed. Beyond proving himself on the mat when it mattered most, he also had to have gained an enormous amount of respect from the staff from pushing through the amount of damage he took along the way as well. He's a warrior for sure.

Doing a quick look the posted roster, incoming recruits, and WrestleStat, this is what we would possibly have on our roster going in to next season. If Manibog (who is the only one currently listed in the portal) leaves, that puts us at 40.

I really hope the roster cap gets struck down... It would really suck for some of these kids who are willing to put in the work with the knowledge that they likely will never see much mat time to get cut.

Unfortunately, the roster limits are part of the overall House settlement and affect all sports. I don't see an avenue where individual sports can appeal, but perhaps one exists. I don't know exactly how it would work, but my guess is that the RTC comes into play so the wrestlers aren't on the "roster". How that affects eligibility, I have no idea.

Probably can’t cut the Mullin boys, right? That would be messy, but that’s two roster spots.

Edit: Upon further thought, maybe daddy can do something about those pesky roster limits.

was it bad for wrestling when OSU won all those titles in a row? Was it bad for wrestling when Iowa won all those titles in a row? Wrestling has suffered because of Title IX and lately NIL. There is nothing historically bad about a powerhouse in any sport. UCLA in basketball. UCONN in womens BB.
Was it bad for wrestling when OSU won all those titles in a row? – No, it was only four years. Right after were status quo; Minn, Iowa… Then came PSU’s run so unless you think our 4-peat sent Cael to PSU… well.

Was it bad for wrestling when Iowa won all those titles in a row? - I believe it was, if not because of the titles at least from the way Gable changed the sport from one filled with offense to one dominated by defense.

Wrestling has suffered because of Title IX –Absolutely; over one hundred wrestling programs were dropped. I know a court said that wasn’t true but judges have said women are men, men are women and furries are a protected class. Somewhere in this country there are judges that will say the anything they want is protected/prohibited with no regard to precedent or the constitution.

…and lately NIL. – Obviously, the verdict is still out but I believe that it will have similar effects as Title XI as schools with deep pockets win and little programs drop.

Anyone that is enrolled has already started their clock and the freshman if enrolled will starts theirs. The gray shirt term means you’re at the RTC but not enrolled in school. Taking a gap year. Otherwise you have 5 years to wrestle 4 once you’ve enrolled at the school. The only way around this is medical redshirts and Olympic redshirts I believe.

Taking a RS Sophomore and putting him off the team but allowing him access to the RTC does not change his eligibility I believe.

I would hope that if/when kids are asked to “leave” they’re given the option to stay around and train at RTC or the staff will do whatever they can to help them find a home somewhere else. A few of our third string type backups could be good additions to smaller programs.

Would seem like a cleaner fit. Some Iowa State fans act like that is a big cut for him but I really have no clue.
ISU had to pay him an extra $50k to make the cut to 41. He was not happy about it. I would take a beefed up Cael Hughes over a sucked in Swiderski during tournament time. One day dual meet it’s a toss up but come tournament time, give me Cael Hughes all day long

If you had to pick 2 out of the following 3 OSU wrestlers to wrestle at the championships at 149lb and 157lb which 2 would you pick?
Jamison, Swiderski, Travis

What about Hughes -141, Swiderski at 149 and Jamison/Teague at 157? Wondering if Jamieson can make 157.
