NCAA PORTAL

What is happening is a staunch response from Penn State. The thunder was stolen, but they’re bringing the storm….now.

There will be lots of moving situations that come to light but it’s obvious what’s going on.

This timeframe is now where Titles are being framed. Super important production happens right now.

I'm just wondering what the end game is to this arms race. Are all the world champions from other countries going to start enrolling in American Universities now so they can get paid? Are college teams going to become pro teams now?

Yes, on top of geography, it is also a well oiled machine. Recruits go to PSU the same reason they come to OSU. They want to train to be the best version of themselves. Just that PSU is well proven to be that place. We will get there soon enough. This is only year 1 for DT and his staff.

It does not matter what happens in PSU, as long as our guys keep improving and winning championships. At the end of the day, you can only wrestle 10 guys.

Seems like every year we say we will compete with PSU in “2-3 years”

That has been for the last 10 years.

I definitely think we will stay top 3 but PSU brings in 2-3 studs for every 1 we bring in. A lot has to do with geography for them.
There is even another level they beat us at, an example is our best recruit is likely Lockett who is outstanding but in that same class Blaze and Duke are rated 1 and 2 in that class with Dee number 3.

Yes, but no!

What the Wrestling world has seen starting Monday is an answer to what happened at the last NCAAs.

Some may not recognize it, but many will.

PSU has opened the war chest and that’s a direct answer to David Taylor.

We are literally watching war games.

I would optimistically counter that with saying I would’ve expected Welsh in the portal on Sunday, if not earlier, but it wasn’t announced until today. But I’m just speculating because what else can we Be expected to now that the season is over and we’re in a lull?
Wild speculation is where the fun is. I do think that Braeden Davis is almost certain to enter the portal. He would be crazy not to. But he has not done so yet. So I know there is still plenty of time for movement and plenty more athletes to hit the portal. Davis is just one example.

What PSU is doing is not good for college wrestling. And if it continues for more than a couple of years viewership will go way down. People are tired of PSU winning every year. There is no competition and no hope for anyone and it's only getting worse with the portal. Money is being spent like crazy to try and catch up but they just keep distancing themselves. Cael and his ego will ruin the sport that birthed him.
It showed with the coverage this year. PSU broke all records and were so unbelievably dominant, but no one talked about them. 5x champ Starocci likely won’t be Hodge. They are judged by their losses or down performances, not their wins. Every single commentator said, let’s talk about who is going to take second place, that’s where it is interest. Everyone is excited for DT to be at OSU so it can make the rest of the league relevant. They are a victim of their own success. It isn’t good for wrestling.

No one stays on top forever.

If that were the case, OAMC would have like 100 titles in a row.

It won’t be easy - there is an attractiveness to being the hunter.
As long as Cael is coach there, he won’t back off, as he shouldn’t. There WILL be regulations, that is 100% going to happen. There are more of the “have-nots” in the NCAA than the “haves”. The poached schools, will lobby for changes, as they should. It’s not sustainable for coaches and schools to put so much time and resources into athletes then to just lose them.

I hope that’s the case. Anyone with any sense should be for the promotion of the overall health of the sport.

John Smith was, and unfortunately it was to his detriment. It’s quite a paradox right now.

He definitely struggled with the cut to 174 in the back half of the season and it showed in his performance. That said, it might be a healthier and more manageable cut with how the new staff is approaching nutrition and weight management.

That’s why I’m still fairly convinced one or more of those guys isn’t at Penn State come the Fall. I just don’t get why they’d sit in a logjam and possibly not compete when they could start (and star) at a lot of other schools. I don’t care how much money they’re making or how much “fun” they’re having. I figured these guys would want to WRESTLE.

That’s what I disagreed with John Smith. We all could see him pull his foot off the throttle, to help wrestling as a whole. Our frustration at watching a legendary program slowly erode was heart wrenching. I have nothing but respect for John and I will never say any ill things of him. He was doing what he felt was right and he has earned our respect, but you don’t pull on the reigns with a winning program, you stay the course and allow the powers that be to make changes. You take advantage of every legal opportunity. DT won’t pull back, that you can count on. If anyone had any illusions of DT going back to PSU to coach after this year, those doubts should be dashed. He’s a cowboy, through and through. Go pokes🤠

This will be interesting to see how it ultimately plays out.

No way that one or two more guys on PSU's roster don't explore their options with Ono and Welch coming aboard.
Maybe in the past I could see them staying and battling it out. But now with DT at oSu and the money that Iowa is throwing around, I'm sure there will be some calling around.

We need contenders at 174 and 184, doesn't have to be Welch.

Don’t disagree with anything you are saying.
John’s situation is somewhat similar to Gundy - you don’t have to like the situation, it is what is it…you DO have to adapt or move on.

That said, he does deserve tremendous credit for being concerned with the overall health of the sport (to restate, we agree that this shouldn’t come at OSU’s expense), the expansion of the B12 and elevation of programs no one outside of wrestling has heard of. It has made a noticeable difference and all of those programs have greatly benefited.

I don’t think anyone wants to see wrestling whittled down to 8-12 programs that matter with only 3 that have a legit shot.

In summary, agree that if you are Cael, don’t blame you for acting in PSU’s best interest and keeping the hammer down.

OSU should do the same - whatever it takes within the rules, which they now are.

Others need to put on their big boy pants and fix the larger structural problems (not expecting anything any time soon).
