It depends on what you mean by challenge. I don't think we beat PSU though with a lineup full of underclassmen, no matter the talent level.
Forward looking I do believe they could challenge penn state. What Taylor did developing the wrestlers this year was something else. If you just roll it one year forward you lose one guy. Just making a point of this roster has a chance to be extremely talented soon.

I agree, in a couple years there should be a very high level of talent on the team.

Theoretically 9 out of 10 weights next year could be filled with guys that were all top 10 p4p recruits in their respective classes... and that's based on guys that are on the roster today.

125 - Spratley - 10.5
133 - Vega - 6.5
141 - Hughes - 8.5
149 - Swiderski - 2.5
157 - Robideau - 5
165 - Lockett - 2.5
174 - Facundo - 2
184 - Thompson - 4.5
197 - Merrill - 4.5

(fractions are because I'm using the average ranking between MatScouts and Flo's big boards)

So, again, in theory, the talent is already extremely high level and should be competitive.

In practice... weights are a thing... and some of these guys might be beaten out by guys that were ranked lower than them in high school (a good thing, most likely)... and the transfer portal exists so names will come and go.

But the foundation for DT and co is really stable and the talent he's been able to secure is incredible.

Guy who tends to post correct info on twitter(x) says Aj Ferrari is about to announce and it is going to be shocking. Shocking can only be two programs at this point lol. Ok state or penn st. About to get very interesting.

I don't think it is us. I know nothing but even if DT wanted him (I don't think he does) I can't imagine they would let him back into school. Some rumors are North Carolina.

Would not consider that shocking. Maybe add Iowa to the list of 3. Taking out all of the likely disqualifying factors……if he was to bump to heavy his timeline would fit like a glove. Two years to allow Ross to get in place and redshirt.

I think North Carolina would be "shocking" mainly because no one has mentioned them until today. Who knows though. Mineo is in thick with the Ferrari's so what he sees is as shocking is probably different than us.
Tony Ramos tweeted this morning “should have bought stock in UNC wrestling yesterday”
I’d be shocked if it isn’t UNC at this point

He said he thought the chances of him going to OSU were high and then said, "just talking to people this morning, it sounds like [that's where he's going]." You can listen below if you want. Starts at the 19:40 point in the video.
Right. That is very different from saying that Pyles reported that his sources say Ryder is signing with us. He's talking about it being likely. Jon asked him what percent chance and then JD asked him if he would bet on OSU getting him vs the field. They are putting it in terms of likelihood, rather than something that is in the process of happening. It's an important distinction imo

I agree. I would imagine DT and company will focus on developing what we have. Kids coming out of HS are ready to go now days.

Man I don’t know. Feels like at 133 we just have Ren. I like what we saw from Ren but I’m not feeling like we are set there by any means. I just can’t imagine they brought in Steen to be the starter.

Seems like a pretty big hole to me. I bet they are shaking the trees trying to find a 133.
Maybe Steen is a real good practice partner. Maybe he speaks Japanese.

Yeah that theory never made sense to me considering DT was clearly trying to get Rocco too.
It seems pretty simple. Cael had a stud (Ryder) in waiting, but he just couldn’t let DT have any shiny toys (Rocco) so he went after him hard and got him. Because Cael has been able to stockpile talent at a ridiculous level, he probably never thought Ryder would leave. It hasn’t happened much at all at PSU. But it did this time and PSU fans are rationalizing because Cael is playing 5D chess flawlessly and everyone kisses his shoes wanting to wrestle for him. So Ryder must be the reason Cael took Rocco in. TIC kinda, but not really. The end result is both programs got damn good wrestlers and it’ll be interesting to see next March who has the better result.

Yeah, that is crazy talk from some of their fans. There is some "cold war" going on and I would put my money on David in a game involving intellect (not saying Cael is stupid.)

As far as the situation goes, we got the better deal here. An extra year of eligibility and PSU paid for the shirt on a likely very similar point scorer.

I would be fascinated to hear Carl’s internal thoughts on that decision. What % did he just flat out not want Taylor to get Welch. Ryder should have a giant chip on his shoulder going into next year. If I was him I would vision quest style train to take Welch down.

You seem to be saying we are getting Ryder, I read the Penn. St. people were mentioning Lehigh as a possible destination besides the Cowboys. Is it just a matter of days where Ryders commitment occurs? Also, if I was a top wrestler I would not be going to Penn St. I would be going to the top challenger if they had the potential to win. My attitude would be I want to be part of the group that overthrow the long-standing King especially since it has become obnoxious. You would be part of a group that becomes legendary versus be 1 of the hundreds that was a long-time regime.

We will have 10 All-Americans next year. Book it.

We are getting Ryder. Then focusing on 133. Inclination is to roll with KD because he is "free" from an NIL acqusition perspective and, as boring as his style may be compared to the all-time greats of this year, he will still finish as an AA...

You take a finalist if he wants to come for sure.

But that % was large as far as keeping Rocco away from David.

It is never done until he's in Stillwater for good, but it sure seems like we are good to go. On an announcement, I think it will happen when the plan says it will happen. There are lots of games being played right now.

I also think you hit it on the head on why OSU is the likely spot. Cael and PSU is clearly attempting to thwart DT and leaving Cael to go to DT is the exact same thing as a middle finger on the way out of the door.

This is the point that some of us have been making for months now.

My only request if KD is the starter, is that we start with HWT and end at 197. Just get that match over with and move on haha

You should know by now whenever we need to refer to that KD simply use "the snowflake".
Not being as familiar with OSU wrestling members, I don't know to whom KD refers. First thought that came to mind was Kyle Dake but "snowflake" surely isn't right. So please just give their real name.

Agree with the comment about the twins changing the dynamic. We’ve seen a bunch of highly rated Fr. that are far from able to contend for AA in their first year. Feels like there is either a size or experience gap at 157 if they are counting on a true Fr.

Agreed. No sure bets. Daton Fix was on the roster for several years and don’t see anyone at that level right now. Doesn’t have to be Fix but also nothing that looks like a sure fire AA right now. You need someone who can contend for top 8 at every weight to close the gap.
