184: Jersey Robb (1st): 4-0 record: 20-4 (TF), 14-3 (Maj), 8-5 (OT), 5-3

50-12 Record on the day. 7 pins, 9 tech falls, 13 major decisions (29 of 50 wins by bonus).

Gotta give mad props to Cutter for his backside (3 majors and 2 pins). Zach a little disappointing. Merrill was good. I can see why Surber is starting right now. Hughes making 133 is awesome and he looked great. Thought I'd see more out of Fish. Konnor doing Konnor things. But wins doing them a lot. Tagen probably gets the outstanding wrestler of our guys. Burton hit for the cycle (decision, major, TF, fall). Braydon not making weight is worrisome.

Lets not kid ourselves, this wasnt a tournament for heavy hitters, but its still wrestling and we stilll looked good doing it.

Really no overt negatives from today. Enjoyed what I saw for the most part. Cody's opponent Bates in the final was an NCAA qualifier last year (went 1-2). Jamison with the fall in the finals is promising to see. Good to see Hughes wrestle at 133 finally haha.
Braydon and Zach, and a little less so Fish as far as negatives. Maybe even JJ as highly ranked out of HS as he is.

Jameson Hughes Merrill JJ are only ones with a future as a potential starter. No excuse for Thompson. He has been training with DT and knew about the tournament. Needs discipline in his life.

Robb will have something to say at 184. He go level explosive athlete who is still a bit raw. Dedicated guy and an extremely hard worker.

Maybe but I was more than impressed with Kolter Burton. That kid has a highlight reel style and he’s a pinner.

Media gone. What’s the dealio
It was a tweet explaining why BT missed weight. Something about 18 hours of travel and getting into Lansing after midnight and staying up all night to make weight and missing it by 0.3 or so.

The name was like Jim Johnson but the handle was BThomps164848573 or something. So he made an account I assume and change the name but didn’t change the handle to what auto populated lol.

Watched Flo all day and never posted which is a first for me. I was extremely pleased with all of the wrestlers. If I had to pick two it would be Merrill at 197 and Cutter Sheets at 157 as they truly battled all day with a fire I did not see last year much. I thought that Cael and Jamison showed some signs of the weight pull but by the end of the day were up to speed.I was very impressed with Kolter Burton at 141. Sam Smith ran into a buzz saw in his second match but fought back through
the consos and looked impressive.

Definitely happy with the results of this tournament. However, I think the best thing and worst thing about the tournament were the same thing, with different wrestlers. Cael and Tagen both making weight and winning their brackets was a great sign for the team. Hopefully the cut over months of wrestling doesn't take its toll on them. BT missing weight is bad. I seen posts about someone posting reasons why weight was missed. That is just excuses. This kid has talent. Every other wrestler made weight. Hopefully he uses this redshirt year to prep for next year, because there will be a lot of other wrestlers on a team counting on him next year.

I know it's an early season tournament but guys making tough cuts and looking good after is very positive. Freshman looked great, the whole team looked energetic and active.

BT's weight mishap seemed to be pure bad luck that I'm sure will also get a talking to from DT regardless ("you have to prepare for the uncontrollables", "don't be 10 pounds over the day before and you won't have this happen") But like I said, he's definitely been doing the right things this summer to be brought to Albania with DT so what the punishment here will be between him and DT.

Also .... it only adds to the fact how ridiculous a cut to 174 was for him last year.

Fish had a below average tournament. Will we ever be dependent on him at 157?
I highly doubt that he’ll be ahead of Robideau even as a Tr Fr. (Unless he has other aspirations that OSU is fulfilling) I wouldn’t be surprised to see him transfer out again after this RS/development year. Go somewhere where he is sure to start and be a team leader. Just speculation on my part.

10 lbs doesn't sound bad for a 195 lb kid. Late afternoon/evening workout drop 5 lb. Morning warmup before weigh-in tourney drop the last 3-4 lb. Now if you spent all day in airports, didn't get in till midnight, missed your evening workout then it might be hard. He's redshirting correct so dissapointing but not a big deal.

I think its more about knowing you have a weigh in for a tournament in advance and leave however much over he was and not having the discipline to manage it the days leading up to it.

It was reported flight delays he didn't get there till midnight. If true and arrive room locked up everyone in bed then what are you suppose to do except try at 5 am when resources available? Was he suppose to workout in the airport terminal?

100% agreed on this analysis, it's between him and DT and I imagine it's not a big deal but also something DT will want to be a learning experience as well. S*** happens sometimes and I expect BT will take accountability for it. But like I said, my main takeaway is that cut to 174 for an entire season probably wasn't fun for him

It'll be very interesting to see what happens as DT gets his own elite recruits in. I think redshirting will be the norm for his top recruits to maximize their long-term potential but I don't think he wants any years where he doesn't have a contending team.

Maybe not a "BIG DEAL" but it is disappointing, and I am sure disappointing for him. As a redshirt you only get a few chances to compete and blowing the chance to compete 4-6 times in a day stinks. Especially after all the time he had 1v1 w/DT

Why not? Certainly not ideal, but I'd do it if I had to. Clearly a different level, but I have run in place and around outside of McDonalds with a trashbag on while on the way to a tournament.

I'm sure there will be a penalty of some sort for BT here. DT cannot allow missing weight to go unchallenged. Especially for a guy who trained with him overseas. It would hurt team culture/cohesion if he let it pass.

I have done stupid stuff too but I thought plastics weren't allowed anymore.

Headed there 3-4 lbs over and getting up early to lose the extra weight it is doable. Headed there 10 lbs over knowing you have limited time and resources isn't realistic or healthy. With his history of poor weight management I have no reason to believe he was just a few lbs over on travel day. Which goes back to my point of managing your weight down leading up to the tournament.
