Last (and only) poll I've seen on this had Tester ahead by 8 points. It was taken back in June though I believe.

Montana is an interesting state politically. You have the more liberal western Montana and then the conservative eastern Montana. Tester has won two state-wide elections in Montana and tends to be well-liked in Montana. He is from Montana and runs his family farm. Rosendale is from Maryland, is a real-estate man, and owns a ranch in Montana.

The race right now is lean Democrat although Cook says it is likely Democrat. No doubt that Trump wants to see Tester beat. This will be a race to keep an eye on come election night. If Tester wins, it probably will be a good night for Democrats across the board.

There is an old saying in Montana that they send their liberals to Washington and their conservatives to Helena.

Right now though, they have a Democratic Governor and one Democratic Senator. Their Governor, Bullock, has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate for 2020. He has won three state-wide elections in Montana (Attorney general in 2008 and Governor in 2012 & 2016). Bullock is from Missoula, which is western Montana and more Democratic. For example, Clinton carried Missoula County in 2016 with 52% of the vote.

There also use to be two congressional districts in Montana. The 1st Distinct covered western Montana and was usually represented by a Democrat while District 2 was central to eastern Montana and represented by a Republican. If you remember Democratic Senator Max Baucus from Montana (Helena, i.e. western Montana). He represented the 1st District before being elected to the Senate. There is only one at-large congressional district now, but Democrats are hoping to get the old 1st back after the 2020 census.

Having lived in Jackson WY, can tell you that the vast majority of people there that weren’t Mormons, business owners or landowners were pinko left wing commie bedwetters.
