Iowa

The dual being at Carver-Hawkeye gives me a pause. We have the ability to win or lose at 17-15 to 15-17. Or a 16-16 score with either Iowa or OSU winning on criteria.
Me as well… I know last season and old staff but everyone was really high on our team last year with the dual in Stillwater. Didn’t we only get 2 wins? 133 and 184? We really $hit the bed last year. I know, total different season but being that dual is in Iowa, I’ll believe it when I see it.

I get what you're saying but once PSU had the better team, we miraculously starting winning at Carver. The better team will win. DT needs to convince the team that they are the better team. There is no mystery with Carver. It's mental.

Intermat's rankings on Iowa have really diverged from Flo's rankings this week. That puts them at a season high -10.9 in expected points.

As recently as January 21 Intermat had Iowa scoring more than Flo.

On the Oklahoma State side there is little disagreement as the spread between the two has never hit 3 points.

Clearly, Iowa has the edge in a tournament structure at this point. But how do the dual lineups look using the average ranking of Intermat, Flo, and Wrestlestat?

5-5.

It looks like it comes down to bonus points.

And OSU does have Pinfalldrickson, so...

And Iowa will probably use Cullan and Nelson at 141 and 174 which will make things look worse if you run those guys

Most excited for Surber/Buchannan...I think it could be a very close match. Buchanan is good but I watched the Minnesota dual and he didn't do much of anything and got a takedown at the end of the match to make it look a little more dominant...Salazar is a good wrestler but he def doesn't have some of Surber.

How tall is Carter Young? I wonder if he could potentially pose a threat to Parco...Parco is only 5'7 and Young just seems a lot taller/lankier..

Lovett is taller than Young and it hasn't helped him. Buchanan is a good finisher and Surber is hard to finish on. I'm not sure if Surber can take Buchanan down more than once . Buchanan seems to be able to get a takedown when he needs one

I think Buchanan is a bad matchup for Surber. Just so much more dynamic. Surber is a tough dude though.

And how the hell has Carter's height/length helped him at all? Ever in folk? he ain't that type of wrestler.

Surber is a bad matchup for anybody due to his scrambling ability. However, Buchanon finds ways to win and gets his points when they're needed. It is super hard to pick Surber here, but it should be fun!

Carter just needs to transition his offense to finishing instead of just getting in. Parco has very good D, this is a tough one for Carter.

Buchanan good on top and hard to score on. Hope Luke can get the 1st takedown but never easy v Buch

It's going to be Angelo. And a lot of people think he wins. Would love to see it, but that's not how i view it.
Angelo will have a shot to win if the refs let him stall like he did against Carter. Hard for anyone to get to their offense when your opponent backs up to out of bounds drops to a knee with one or both feet out of bounds. Then shots from a knee knowing their safe from counter.

Angelo will have a shot to win because he’s a quality wrestler with elite defense. Carter got to his legs 3x and wasn’t close to finishing once, not many people are stopping Carter when he’s that deep.

I picked Surber. If he wins, that place will sound like a library.

If given a choice, what weight would you like to start at if you had that ability? 197?

I pick 197 because it would add pressure to either Arnold or Ferrari to beat Plott at 184 in the last match in front of a large crowd with the dual on the line.

I'm not sure on the best strategy, but there's nothing I like more than having Wyatt as my security blanket at the end of the dual. I also don't think Ferrari will be too bothered by the pressure. He looked unbothered in State College against a 4-time champ who shit-talked his big brother.

I guess I saw the other matchup between Carter and Angelo. Here was the play by play of the match I saw:

184 - #1 Carter Starocci VS Angelo Ferrari

Period 1:
It looks like Gabe Arnold won't be wrestling tonight, so Carter will have to run a Ferrari off the road. Here we go! Circling & head tapping. Ferrari with a very low stance. He's on & off one knee. Carter pushes forward. Ferrari reaches for a leg, but Carter keeps coming & has Ferrari on the edge. Carter takes Ferrari out of bounds. Stalling on Ferrari. Carter pushes forward again. Ferrari shoots, but no luck. Carter has Ferrari on the edge again. Ferrari shoots & gets to a leg. Carter sprawls & gets out of it. Carter is pressing forward again. He shoots & takes Ferrari out of bounds. The crowd wants another stall call, but no luck. Circling & tying up & hand fighting. Carter pushes forward again. Ferrari is a solid 184 pounder. He's as big or bigger than Carter. Carter drives forward & has Ferrari on the edge again. Stall warning #2 on Ferrari, point Carter, 1-0. Carter has an ankle on the edge. Ferrari dives to a leg. They're scrambling & time expires. 1-0 Carter. Carter was close to scoring there.

Period 2:
Ferrari takes down. He sits out & gets to a quadpod, but not for long before Carter brings him back to the mat. Ferrari gets back to a foot, but Carter breaks him back to his base. Ferrari gets to his feet, but Carter takes him out of bounds, restart. Carter has +46-sec RT. Ferrari is still down. He gets to a quadpod & tries to roll, but Carter blocks the roll. Ferrari gets back to his feet, turns & gets the escape, 1-1. Carter has +1:18 RT. Carter is immediately back in on a leg. Ferrari does the splits. Carter tries to pull Ferrari back in & Ferrari dives at Carter's leg. No scoring as the period ends, 1-1

Period 3:
Carter takes down. He gets to his feet & gets the escape, 2-1. Carter still has +1:07 RT. Circling, Ferrari shoots & gets a leg. Carter sprawls back. Stalemate & restart, 1:08 left. Circling & tying up. Ferrari pushes forward a little now. Ferrari shoots, but Carter circles away. Ferrari shoots, Carter counters & gets a leg. Carter shelves the leg. Ferrari is super flexible & the ref stops it for a stalemate, restart. Caution Ferrari, false start. Caution #2 Ferrari, false start again. Ferrari shoots off the whistle, but time expires.

Carter Starocci DEC Angelo Ferrari 3-1

What I saw was a kid too scared to mix it up with Carter. Stalling and edge wrestling to make it seem closer than it really was. I don't imagine it will be that close if there ever is a next time.

Carter didn’t really shoot in the match, pushing forward isn’t going to generate a bunch of stall calls.

Starting at 197 would be great for Iowa, then they know how much bonus they have to overcome from Wyatt immediately.

You're right, he's a kid. A teenager. And he didn't let a grown man in his 6th year in college score a takedown, including when he had his leg shelved in the center of the mat. Good job pointing out he went to a knee a lot. He's a Ferrari and that's their style. He does it every match and not because he's scared.

And he took the play by play from a Penn st source so obviously that's how it read. Regardless of what us fans think Carter tried taking him down multiple times and couldn't. Carter showed Angelo a ton of respect the way he wrestled him which tells me he felt that Angelo was a game opponent

I watched it and I didn't get a much different opinion than yours.

Angelo showed tremendous respect to Cstar and wasn't very risky with his scoring. Cstar knew better than to Wrestle recklessly to get beat by a RS freshman by a short time TD.

It was honestly pretty obvious that Angelo was scared to pour it on offensively and Cstar was scared to push that same gameplan?

Cstar is a generational talent and he didn't blow the kid out of the water...there is a reason for that.

Why should a vet open up when he can win 3-1 easily? Carter showed these same traits at nationals last year, A win is a win,

Today is actually Nelson birthday and he's 26. This is his 7th year RS, covid and a medical. That's actually not very old if you look at the ages of kids who take a mission . Oklahoma st had a 28 year old on the team a few years ago. He did 2 years at Oklahoma st then took a mission then did 5 more years. He graduated college 9 years after HS. Matt Brown Penn st graduated college 7 years after HS as well he took a RS then a 2 year mission and then wrestled for 4 years.
lol. 26 is old. and rare. stop.
