Iowa vs. Ok. State

He made a world team at 57 kg same day weigh ins. He won a junior world championship at 57 kg . I think he is doing pretty damn good. I wouldn’t write him off after one performance after not wrestling a freestyle match in over a year.
I wrote him off? Daton won his junior world title in 2017 @ 55 kg under the old day before weigh in rules. That's when he obliterated the field. Looked a lot like this year (until the finals) @ 61 kg with same day weigh ins. He's a monster at his ideal weight.

I've posted this before, the biggest challenge he has is going from 133 to 57 kg for the trials just 2 weeks after nationals. He said it himself, it's tough cut in a short amount of time. That's why I suggested he go 141 / 65 kg or shrink down and go 125 / 57 kg.

He beat a world champ to make the team 2 years ago before the suspension at 57kg . He is a world silver medalist at 61 kg .I believe your suggestions are probably void compared to his coaches and his father.

This seems kind of personal to you. Is it? Are you offended by some suggestions on a message board? Of course Daton is going to listen to his coaches and dad rather than some anonymous guy on a forum. I'm just a fan like most on here.

Daton has a tough cut to 57 kg with same day weigh ins. Kevin Jackson said it himself during the U23s in 2018. And yes, Daton beat Gilman in 2019. Then Gilman beat Daton in Italy in 2020 at the Matteo Pelican. Gilman went on to win gold, while Daton didn't medal. Daton is much better at 61 kg than he is at 57 kg. The last month has demonstrated it. He destroyed the field at WTT and then did the same at Worlds until the finals.

I know less about wrestling than anyone on this board but I always struggle with these predictions that say a kid who just manhandled a dominant 25 year old former national champion and wrestled Fix close to the end has no chance to make it into our lineup.

Young would have to have severe regression over 3 months for this to be true.
I have a memory of an interview with Young where he felt he would be a 141 (remember Daton is at 133). He felt the Coaches would decide if he would wrestle at 141 or redshirt. However Young said he felt he has never lifted much weights and that he would benefit from lifting in a college program and getting a little bigger. This is just my opinion but I think that would be a good move for him. Hone and Mastro are also involved in this 141 discussion. I would think Mastro would be a very big 141 with him wrestling 152 as a junior and wrestled top 160 pounders such as Gallagher, Facundo and Gabe Arnold. It is likely he has not cut weight in high school or not much. Young might be the best now at 141( he had an unbelievable freestyle season) and he is a great prospect. I still like the idea of redshirting him and maybe jump another level this year, get a little bigger and stronger and be ready to challenge anyone at 141 next year (he did make weight at 134 and 1/2 pounds about 1 or 2 months ago). As I have written several times I still believe that 2022-23 and after are our best shots to win a team title. Is that title guaranteed, obviously it is not but when I look at lineups I see our future lineups better than this year. I have been wrong before but right now I think I am right ( but I don't know the improvement of many of our wrestlers through the off season and during this season. So? You also might take a little more time in your reading other people's posts. Carter Young was a very big get for us!

Harley, your humility is showing and I do not and never have believed you know little about wrestling. Now that every body is used to your "Grain of salt" style I would say you are one of the most keen observers on wrestling on this board. I agree completely about Young and frankly his scrambling style fits folkstyle better than freestyle IMO as he can expose his back while scrambling. I do not count Dusty Hone out at 141 this year. He obviously does not have the upside of Young but he is super experienced and just needs to add a little more offense to a good defense and a better than average top position. However, Young showed his excellence in beating absolute experienced great wrestlers at the trials.

I really like Dusty Hone. Solid wrestler that seems to work hard and do things right off the mat. Unfortunately I have not seen anything that makes me think he is a top 5-6 guy. Top 5-6 guys are what we need to start having, minimum, to hang more banners….at nearly every weight.
