I just read where they plan to alternate matches between the duals. That will be interesting.

Curious as I’m not a hardcore wrestling fan. Is this event going to sell out?

Doubtful Fix will wrestle both so ... prob won't get the best at every weight.

It was brought up on another board that this is just a couple weeks after the Yarygin. Probably be a big issue with getting the best to do both.

Yep, OK state youth wrestling tourney is Feb 11-12. That’s gonna eliminate a lot of fans.
I got an email as a wrestling supporter for OSU that you could buy tickets early using the code word "COWBOYS" But I had no success. Regular tickets go on sale tomorrow according to the email.

I bought 8 using the code RANGERS. You might try that.

Predictions :
Mastro vs Lee
Fix vs Desanto
Young vs Eirman
GFellar vs Murin
Sheets vs Young
Whittlake vs Bull
Plott vs Kemerer
Geer vs Brands
Ferrari vs Warner
Surber vs Cassiope

It’s great they’re doing this but not sure of the place or the year. Dallas may not draw well and this is Iowa’s most loaded team in forever….at least since the Hokeyes…..which shouldn’t really count.

I saw on an interview on Flo that Daton does plan on wrestling all 3 of his remaining year of college eligibility at Oklahoma State.
I think I saw the video you're referring to, it was right after Worlds. He also said he plans to stay @ 61 kg for 2022 (has a bye to Final X) and then be back down to 57 kg for the Olympics in 2024.

How about this? Daton goes 125 in 2024 and only wrestles the Iowa dual, the Scuffle, Big12s, & Nationals. Yokubaitis or Birdwell wrestles the other duals. This way he doesn't have to make weight every week & he also doesn't have to cut from 133 to 57 kg for the OTT 2 weeks after Nationals. Mastro could redshirt & Blankenship could go 133 as a RSFr.

It depends on capacity, but I expect it will. The 2015 dual meet with Iowa in their football stadium had an attendance of over 42,000. That was helped by the football game later that day, but it does show the demand for great dual meets like this. Should be an awesome event!

Fix,Sheets,Geer and Ferrari should be favored
Yeah, I can see Gear winning. I think sheets is a good possibility but both will be highly contested. Geer tends to be a slow starter to the season and Sheets season vs the NCAAs were way different. If our Young wrestles and his folkstyle is comparable to his freestyle, he has a very good chance too. I revise my opinion to 2 to 4.

I know Fix would love to go back down to 57 for the trials but he definitely does not perform at his best there. Unfortunately, he suffers from the James Green syndrome, he is solidly a tweener. Hopefully, by 2024, he hits a growth spurt and becomes a 65

Based on what Willie said, I think Assad might go 184 for Iowa.

John made some comments about the team. Said we are deep with 2 guys at every weight. Also said the coaches will know by January if the true freshmen are ready (Scuffle performance?). I think it ends up Mastro @ 141 (Young needs to put on size) and Voinovich @ 149. Just guesses.

Doubtful that Surber is our heavy-weight. He is shown on the Roster as 184/197. Should be a great event. Iowa is favored but by the time this event rolls around we should have our lineup set, injuries to either side can happen and I am not counting our Cowboys out. 125- Iowa big favorite with Lee, 133 Fix favored but a tough match, 141 too soon to predict our starter but Iowa favored no matter who wrestles, 149 If it is Gfeller than this is a toss-up match if Gfeller is over all injuries physical and mental, 157 another toss-up but I believe Sheets will prevail, 165 lets see if Witlake can cut the gap between he and "the bull". This is a crucial match for us, 174 Plott vs. Kemmerer Iowa favored but Plott has healed up and I give us a chance, 184 Geer will win over Brands IMO, Ferrari vs. Warner and Ferrari is favored, 285 Cassioppi favored against who ever we put out. If anyone has seen a picture of Cassioppi this year he has cut weight and added muscle and looks great. In a much closer match than the odds show I predict it will come down to heavy-weight where Iowa is heavily favored.
LETS GO POKES!!!

I agree about Young because I remember an interview with him where he said he needed to really start lifting weights and put on good weight so he can wrestle 141. I think he would therefore benefit from a redshirt year and I would like to see Travis Mastro at 141 like you project.

In a perfect world and we wrestle our behinds off, 5-5 split and we lose by bonus points. The more important part is we wrestle our butts off and it gets us ready for March. Iowa is loaded and you can bet they will come ready for a fight. We better be ready to punch back.

Oberebo if you click on him you will then see a picture of Surber and to me he looks like he has gained a bunch of good weight. He looks like a HWT especially since I think he is about 6:2 and if you go into his details they list him as 285. I think they should redshirt him even if he can beat Austin Harris in a close match.

I agree and Austin Harris has improved each year and he is not chopped liver. I believe he will be the Heavy weight.

Surber is weighing 230. Espo said in the Rokfin interview with willie

I know less about wrestling than anyone on this board but I always struggle with these predictions that say a kid who just manhandled a dominant 25 year old former national champion and wrestled Fix close to the end has no chance to make it into our lineup.

Young would have to have severe regression over 3 months for this to be true.

I don't think anyone is saying Young has no chance to start this year. He's very talented. These are just guesses based on his current size (strength). He wrestled 138 in HS and 61 kg in freestyle. When Flo asked him if he planned to go 133 or 141 in college, he answered probably 141 once he starting lifting weights.

Personally I thought he outscrambled Gross, while Daton actually overpowered him. And college 141s are big. Many of them cut down from the 160s. Maybe strength isn't an issue though and he is ready.

You might be correct. He truly was a force at senior nationals. It maybe a title run thing. Also, I would like to see his folkstyle skills. Not always does folkstyle and freestyle correlate. I am very excited about his potential.

He definitely is muscular but I would say he is still growing. Considering the fact he was a legit 57 about a year and a half ago but it seems like he is much more comfortable up at 61. Many wrestlers keep growing in college, especially ie David Taylor and Kyle Dake.
I’m just saying I hope he hits a growth spurt because I don’t see him being able to wrestle down at 57 anymore. I could be wrong

You talking about a cowboy bulk job?

Well you don't have to get taller to go up in weight. Pletcher went 133, 141 & then 65 kg. Molinaro went 141, 149 and then wrestled 70 kg a little.

Daton is perfect for 57 kg with day before weigh ins or 61 kg with same day weigh ins. He's an Olympic tweener unfortunately.

He made a world team at 57 kg same day weigh ins. He won a junior world championship at 57 kg . I think he is doing pretty damn good. I wouldn’t write him off after one performance after not wrestling a freestyle match in over a year.
