That’s your 1st warning!I get that we are moving into a new era but I'd be embarrassed if my school had to buy a team every year just to get a trophy. If it wasn't for Slumlord Bob, Iowa would be scratching to get 4th place. As it is, it only makes them competitive for 2nd. After this year, I think Iowa starts fighting for 3rd.
Iowa, where wrestling dreams go to die.
Man, I’m told it’s changing soon in regards to just buying guys?If NCAA leadership weren’t so preoccupied with where their wives’ boyfriends were taking them on vacation, Iowa might be getting a little too brazen with their recruiting tactics. But alas, that isn’t the case and I don’t expect anything to happen
At the NCAA level or specifically w/ Iowa?Man, I’m told it’s changing soon in regards to just buying guys?
It seemed like a governing level where individual gifts are going to be limited. At the NCAA level or specifically w/ Iowa?
Yes sir! They will be creative with what changes come, whatever they are.I don't recall the specific number off the top of my head but PSU has already received private endowments of 5-6 yearly scholarships for wrestling toward the new 30 scholarship limit. I believe PSU still intends to fund the first 9.9. Long term, that's a far more cost effective way to build a team than these one year purchases.
I know OSU has an active alumni base. So does Ohio State and a few others. To me, the future is in endowing scholarships. It takes a lot of the recruiting ambiguity out of the equation, and promotes the add-on benefits that the university can offer, such as NIL and post-collegiate goals.Yes sir! I like Correa to OSUThat is a good pick up for Iowa. This guy is good. Looking forward to see where Correa goes. I really think he could be a future HWT for OK State!
College athletics has become a disgusting, wild west business. Was told this week by someone who absolutely would know….slumlord Bob called Buchanan at OU out of the blue, not in any portal period, much less after a declaration, and told him he’d give him $22k just to apply/fill out paperwork (I guess for admission to Iowa). He does. Then he says I’ll give you $25k to just come for a visit. He does. Then they hit him with the $500k and he really has no choice.
While I do believe that is super attractive to the kids that aren’t commanding the biggest interest, and is a selling point, it’s not what I’m talking about.I know OSU has an active alumni base. Can you imagine how powerful it would be to have 30 full scholarship to give out? Endowing eliminates that discussion, so all you have left is RTC and NIL.
Great thought provoking post and I don't have a solid answer. I just have a gut feeling that Iowa and Bob are killing the sport with these attacks against other programs. Just look at ASU. They have become the farm system for Iowa. At what point does ASU pull the plug on their program? Brands is circling the drain because of his ineptitude and is pulling other programs down the drain with him. I'm frankly disgusted. Tom Brands is sacrificing our sport to make bank until his contract expires in 2029. It pisses me off. While I do believe that is super attractive to the kids that aren’t commanding the biggest interest, and is a selling point, it’s not what I’m talking about.
Yes, I’m sure we are working on something similar with regards to scholarships. But the rules are changing and I think it’s a direct answer to Section 8 Bob.
I think a limit is coming to how much one entity can give. I’m not sure if it’s one kid or in aggregate? I just think these days of throwing crazy money from one guy is coming to scrutiny.
I don’t mind discussing the scholarship endowment. But would a discussion on NIL endowment be more appropriate if things aren’t changing?
Which is why I think there’s a legitimate movement happening to quell what they’re doing.Great thought provoking post and I don't have a solid answer. Honestly this should be the next fundraising push. Endowing scholarships will be a top factor in universities keeping wrestling teams. Not having that yearly cost is a big deal.According to the POSSE magazine OSU Wrestling has 11.25 scholarships fully endowed.
9 full
3 half
3 quarter.
I get emails on this subject regularly from PSU. It is a big push these days. As soon as my divorce from batshit crazy is over, I will endow one myself. I really believe a more stable future is in endowing scholarships. Does it make the sport better? No it doesn't but endowing scholarships is the next advancement for the sport. We can't go back so we have to move forward with the current rules.Honestly this should be the next fundraising push. That’s true and progressive and outside the scope of policing.I get emails on this subject regularly from PSU. It is a big push these days. Oh the things we could fund with the money spent on crazy women 😂I get emails on this subject regularly from PSU. It is a big push these days. I funded 7 digits of crazy but no longer. I'm about 3 months from freedom from the insanity. Being alone never felt so good!!! It's like a reset button.Oh the things we could fund with the money spent on crazy women 😂
I just don't believe NIL helps my team long term. The gut reaction is that NIL will do that but I'm not one of them. A full scholarship provides a solid foundation for a discussion with a recruit. That’s true and progressive and outside the scope of policing.
Combo of both I think?!I just don't believe NIL helps my team long term. The gut reaction is that NIL will do that but I'm not one of them. A full scholarship provides a solid foundation for a discussion with a recruit.
True, but my thought is that by endowing the scholarship, it removes a major issue for the recruit and family, and leaves the discussion to NIL and RTC. If you can give 100% scholarship AND have a solid argument for RTC, then you are way ahead of the game. NIL comes into play but I don't believe most elite kids decide where to go based on NIL It's on post-collegiate destination.Combo of both I think?!
You aren’t snagging the crème without a little bit of money.
My thought is we will be in the fight for 2nd this year. Next year without hitting the portal very hard I don't believe we will be as good as this year. Now after our freshmen class coming in next year have a year to develop, we could challenge for number 1 with good portal and getting a real good 2026 class ( very important). Next year could be more of a struggle since we lose Witcraft, Fish, Amine, Hamiti, Plott, Surber and Hendrickson. These are tremendous losses. We will need to recruit great and get great development or we will fall next year. I am enjoying this year so far.I get that we are moving into a new era but I'd be embarrassed if my school had to buy a team every year just to get a trophy. Big losses but hopefully frees up big moneyMy thought is we will be in the fight for 2nd this year. Next year without hitting the portal very hard I don't believe we will be as good as this year. Replacements on the rosterBig losses but hopefully frees up big money
Lockett, Routledge, Robideau. All freshmen but really talentedReplacements on the roster
Wittcraft - Hughes
Fish - Travis
Amine - ??
Hamiti - ??
Plott - Thompson
Surber - Merrill
Hendrickson - Doucet
Who do we have to replace Amine and Hamiti?
Could be, it will free up scholarship money but not NIL money ( what they gave to this group is gone). Also, a lot of scholarship money will be given out to the 2025 class which has great quality and quantity.Big losses but hopefully frees up big money

I think this is true for the truly elite- those that will make world team and win world medals. But there is a group a tier just below who will chase the money and than can get you a trophy at NCAA tournamentTrue, but my thought is that by endowing the scholarship, it removes a major issue for the recruit and family, and leaves the discussion to NIL and RTC.
