HS Recruiting News

Vega won by tech over Edmund North wrestler with a combination of takedowns and back points. At the end Vega could just blow thru his opponent on shots. He is stronger than he looks. It reminds me of a tournament with hundreds of wrestlers, I believe maybe in Omaha where the reporters story wrote I could give you 2 hundred picks before the tournament who is the best wrestler at this tournament( if you don't know the wrestlers) and nobody would pick the best. Of course the best wrestler was John Smith.
Routledge won by major in the quarters and I think Jeter wrecked his opponent in the quarters also for Edmund North.

Lockett techs his opponent in the quarters with some great ducks. He must have had 6 takedowns. I watched most of the match but Guerrero was getting beat soundly when I switched to Ladarion's match.

Ignasio Villasenor wins by 1st period pin in the semi's in the 1st period. The only problem was that the takedown and pin occurred outside the camera coverage.
Jax wins by tech fall in the semi's. Several slide by's, headlock back points. He is a point machine and goes move to move with lightening speed.

Seth Mendoza beat Vega soundly 4-0. Mendoza is really good he was better technically all around. I can see him doing amazing in college.

Very depressing With Vega getting soundly beat by Mendoza 4 to 0. He did not show much in this match.

Jeter was very impressive winning 14 to 2 win and Ladarion gave up an escape and takedown in short period of time and won 8 to 4 over Torres. Ladarion rode out the 3rd period minimizing any risk of losing. Jeter did a sadulaev for 7 which I saw him do in another match in this tournament. Jeter is very funky.

Michael Mocco won 16 to 6 over the 7th rated HWT in the Country, Effendian in the Iron Man finals.
113 Villasenor lost 4 to 3 to Number 1 Bachman. Bachman got a takedown after a bad shot by Villasenor. Villasenor got an escape and 2 stalling points. 0 good shots by Villasenor but Bachman has good defense and also a staller.

I think Vega went into the consi's after the loss to Mendoza pissed off! He dominated the next two matches. Still a great showing by Vega. I know he wanted to see Blaze in this tourney, but came up just short. Still very excited to see this kid in the future! Overall, a great showing for OK State recruits at the toughest High School tournament in the nation.

If I want one of them in the room it’s Villasenor, Bachman’s stalling won’t work in college.
Vega takes 3rd by pinning Herring in the 3rd period. He dominated the match with 3 takedowns before the pin. Herring is rated 7th at 138. Jax beats Raney rated number 2 at 126 with a takedown in overtime. Bassett wins by tech fall over an unrated opponent.

I have 0 insight but I would think we are the leader to get Mocco. Mainly bc his dad wrestled here and DT and Company are around his training weight. Plus maybe Wyatt hangs around to train for the Olympics.

My 2cents on Ironman performance from our commits:

138 - #1 Sergio Vega: Obviously we were hoping for a finals matchup against Blaze, which was sidetracked due to a (loss 0-4) against Mizzou commit Seth Mendoza. The rest of his matches consisted of 3 falls and 2 techs. Disappointing, but wouldn't worry to much at all about him dropping a single tough match.

157 - #5 Kody Routledge: Damn. What a fantastic tournament, multiple pins and bonus points all the way through. Outside of the last minute of the final (which he still got a major in) he looked AMAZING. Always in position, always pressuring, always looking looking to score. You can tell he's continued to improve physically and technically, but you can really see a difference in mindset. He BROKE a 2x Pennsylvania state champ and majored the #2 guy at his weight. It's hard to say the #5 guy at his weight and #26 in his class is underrated, but based on what we seen at Ironman Kody is underrated.

157 - #13 Ishmael Guerrero: Didn't watch much of his matches, based on what I've seen from him previously though 4th place in this field is a pretty good showing for him. Lost in the 3rd place match 6-4 to Brogan Turner, a 3x Ohio State champ and NC State commit.

165 - #1 LaDarion Lockett: I mean... not much to say. He continues to show that he is exactly who we know he is.

175 - #19 Ethan Teague: DNP'd. Only caught his loss on the backside. Was not impressive. Was in on several good scoring opportunities and could not finish, also couldn't ride and couldn't get off bottom.

I am predicting Wolbert to Missouri based on his Askren connection.
definitely possible. He's a very sharp kid though and I think he's really weighing out every positive and negative... It won't come down to that imo.

Routledge and Lockett both won Iron Man by majors in the finals. Big win for Routledge beating the 2nd rated 157 in the Country Will Denny. LaDarion beat Melvin Miller the 3rd rated 157.
I know this board really loves sleeping on Kody Routledge but the kid had one hell of an Ironman. He easily majored (almost pinned) Will Denny in the finals to win it… the same Will Denny who just beat Melvin Miller in the semis and Kollin Rath in the finals to win Super 32.

Kody is a stud and he seems to be getting better by the minute.

I watched his iron man matches. I don’t watch a whole lot of HS wrestling but he looked like a college wrestler for sure. His post-finals interview was very DT-esque

Does that have implications with respect to where Bo Bassett goes? Also, does that mean OSU can and will start gettin more Askren kids moving forward??
