The election of Trump did not cause the vitriolic hate from the left; it simply revealed it.
I think you're 70-80% correct.
I think another 20-30% is ginned up due to their inability to cope and listen.
In it's most simple form, this new hate and vitriol is a manifestation of the anger that is acting as a self preservation mechanism for their imploding worldview.
The midterms need to demonstrate to those that are "clinging" to their anger that 2016 wasn't a fluke. Until 2016 is reinforced, many will choose to externalize it (the election of Trump) as a fluke, freak occurrence brought on by many things coming together BUT IN NO WAY due to their worldview.
As long as they are allowed to explain it away like that, many will embrace their new anger/hate.

She didn’t even go into what white person had to drive them to the dmv to get a license.
So... the existence of a man who isn't a "typical black" (..ahem) was confusing to her. This expectation of a monolithic coalition of minorities is one of the dumbest progressive fantasies I've ever seen.
