Honest questions for you: 1) Were you happy with the trade status quo with China? (Yes/No). 2) If no, what would you have preferred to see done differently than Trump to address it?

1. No opinion. If China wants to lie, cheat and steal, I think it is wiser to not do business with them than to do business with them and get in trade wars. I do not acknowledge that exploiting their labor is some sort of urgent requirwmwnt to crawl in bed w a communist authoritarian regime. I guess no? Why enable their cruelty?

2. I would probably prohibit chiney nationals from working on anything that was sensitive or national security related in some way and formally advise the country that everyone enters China and their system of laws under their own risk without expectation of bailout from the US taxpayer. The country is Ran by A regime that fundamentally does not recognize private property rights. Hello? Am i missing something?

So let me get this right...you would rather have a full trade embargo of China, and yet you ridicule the current administration for the economic impact of a 'trade war via tariffs'?

No, i never said a trade embargo?!? Trade all you want, just don't expect the country to go to war and spend money to bail you out.

you're on my ass over this for some reason I don't get. I've said multiple times I'm not a strong advocate either way, as i'm admittedly out of lockstep with ALL of the narratives on this -- except for maybe poncadan. The only guy on here i agree with is the kleptoanarchyliberwhatever guy.

I'm not on your ass. I'm just trying to understand the leftist position that attacks Trump on this 'trade war' with China. I see lots of criticism of him but no alternatives other than maintain the status quo that both sides agree was lopsided in favor of China. As for my embargo statement, you said this: "If China wants to lie, cheat and steal, I think it is wiser to not do business with them than to do business with them and get in trade wars." Am I wrong to interpret the 'its wiser to not do business with them' as a trade embargo?

I don't know a "leftist" position -- I can only tell you mine. You'll need to check in with Hannity or Rush to tell you the official leftist position, because all the leftists I know never bring up China.

Yes, you interpreted that statement as calling for some type of government prohibition. American businesses can do what they want, I'm just saying if they want to make money from a communist regime that doesn't respect property rights, don't expect Uncle Sam to wade in when they get cheated. Laissez faire, not an embargo. Chinese stealing american business technology will be greatly reduced if Americans quit giving them access to our business technology.

so you’re saying diane feinstein’s chinese chauffeur was a bad idea?

and we’re the sheep?

got it

I'm confident I've never said anything about diane feinstein's chauffeur. Do you overlay every incel talking point over everything you hear that's not a talking point.?

Thank you. I don't think your scenario covers all situations, as Chinese companies counterfeit and duplicate existing US patents and products all the time without US companies providing the technical details. That said, I don't disagree with you that some businesses want the government to protect them from bad international actors that they've chosen to do business with, and that's not where we should be.
