Energy Star thermostat settings:

Are we a spoiled nation or what?

It's no wonder it's getting harder and harder to find Americans that will work outside in the heat.

I work (engineer) inside in the heat, as in, not air conditioned. Around hot welding robots where you cannot have fans blowing because it'll blow off the shielding gas. Around metal machining equipment where the coolant mist puts tons of humidity in the air. But I am acclimated to it. And the pay is unbelievable. 3 years and 10 months more, if I live, then I am on easy street.

I set my thermostat at 77 and run the ceiling fans. I'm quite comfortable sometimes having to put on extra clothes. It's never adjusted once I turn it on in spring/summer. I replaced my a/c unit 3 years ago and it's clearly more efficient, cooler and much cheaper to operate. Electric bills cut by more than 50% over the old unit.

You guys keep it cold. I would freeze. 74 at night for me. 75 or 76 during the day, wearing shorts and a t-shirt usually.

My wife has MS and heat is really bad for her. I have a ton of insulation, new windows, 4 turbine vents for the attic, a super efficient new A/C system, and some other insulating details.

I keep the AC at 68/69, it makes a difference for her but I do everything I can to be efficient as possible.

The older I get the less inclined I am to work in the heat, that is by design though. Spent all the time needed working outdoors to know that unless its something that's enjoyable, forget it (OSU football, yard work and backpacking). The reason its harder and harder to find people to work outside is because for many the government has made it to easy to simply not work. Working in Saudi at 122F convinced me that the trajectory was on needed to be re-directed.

We are at 71-72 at night and 76 in the day. When it starts to cool off (50's & 60's in the morning we'll open the windows and put fans in the windows to suck cooler air into the house then will button everything up in the morning and keep the house fairly cool most, if not all the day. Zero chance we would ever try to sleep with the AC at 82 and only a freakin moron would suggest doing so.

76 all the time is fine for my house in the summer; comfortable upstairs and near meat locker in the basement. 72 in the winter most of the time
